Casalone is a stunning 16th Century restored stone wall farmhouse in the heart of Chianti, 5 minutes drive from the town of Greve-in-Chianti, and 30 minutes from the city of Florence. It is situated just a few kms from the three medieval hamlets of Badia a Passignano, Montefioralle and Panzano in Chianti.
The stunning property is located at the end of a private road that has no through traffic.
Situated on top of a hill in it's own 4.5 hectares of olive groves and vineyards, the property faces south with uninterrupted views over the beautiful rolling Tuscan hills barely changed since medieval times.
The same views can be enjoyed from the private infinity pool set in an immaculate garden, the perfect place to be in the Tuscan summer heat!
The house sleeps 6-8 people and with lots of indoor and outdoor space, it is the perfect place for family and friends, for celebration or relaxation.
Some of the fresh produce to be found growing there include olives, grapes, pears, apples, cherries, walnuts, almonds, figs and peach. If it's in season, help yourself!
I am from Scotland but now live in London. I have two children and love the outdoor, fresh air and sport.
Barclay Morison purchased this farmhouse in 2011
The location is incredible if you want peace and quiet with beautiful views. A lot of loving work has gone into the garden and pool.
The pool, garden, fields and scenery are stunning, as are the local villages, all close by.
The house is warm and nice, we use every part and was just great, enjoyed the fantastic views of the terrace, the kitchen is for fun cooking and good conversation, I slept like a baby. I can stay there forever and I am definitely going back. Ester was really nice and help us with everything.
The Pre-holiday info provided by the owner, Barclay Morrison, was the equal-best we've ever had; accurate and very informative.
We were greeted in a pre-arranged spot by the extraordinarily cheerful and helpful Ester whose job was to meet/greet and show us around the property. But prior to meeting her she had been in touch asking if we wanted the larder/fridge stocked (which we were very appreciate of given that we'd driven from Jersey, some 15hrs) and so upon arrival we had bread, milk, cheese etc and some lovely Proseco and Italian beers on ice and hence could leave the shopping until the next day.
Ester is the best welcoming host we've ever had and provided loads of hints and tips for the local area as well as ensuring we knew our way around the property and grounds before she left.
The property is set alone, down a track, rather than a road, and its location is stunning overlooking distant Tuscan hills and all around olive groves and vines. It is in splendid isolation and the loudest noises I can remember were cicadas in the early evening - a lovely sound.
Although the house/villa is lovely with plenty of space, a superb kitchen, spacious rooms (including large fans in the bedrooms, so don't bring your own) and extremely well-equipped, we spent almost all of the time outside.
The gardens lead to the pool area which for me and the family was THE highlight. It's a large infinity pool with views across to distant wooded hills and plenty of space to lounge around. Our typical day was..... get up early at 6am when it's cool, go for a run, breakfast then go sight-seeing for the morning, then come back for an afternoon at the pool.
I cannot say anything negative about this property but I would urge you to bring insect repellent as the mossies were keen from early evening onwards.
For sightseeing my advice is to get cracking early in the morning in high season; car parks in Sienna, Florence and some of the well-known bigger villages/small towns are packed-out by late morning.
In summary the owner was a pleasure to deal with, the property description was spot on, everything was wonderful and it's hard to decide if the highlight was the pool or the incredible, caring, welcome from Ester - after a 15hr drive she was like a Goddess.
My wife and I stayed at Casalone in June to celebrate our honeymoon. To put it simply, we could not have asked for a more perfect spot to stay for a week! The lovingly and sensitively renovated farmhouse is a pleasure to stay in and sits in a beautiful location, with a beautiful view and one of the best private pools we have ever had the pleasure to use.
On arrival in Greve, the nearest town, we were met by Ester, who takes care of the day to day running of the property. Ester drove in front of us to show us the way, which would have been difficult alone, and we climbed some tricky roads that are steep, have a fair few hairpins and are single track in places (not unexpected for a house this secluded and fine once you’re used to it). Ester was clearly very proud of the house and showed us around, told us where everything was and how things worked (outdoor lighting, pool cover etc), additionally she was available by phone at any time in case of questions or issues and we couldn’t praise her enough.
The house itself was spacious, although there were only two of us, very well equipped and spotless throughout. It was evident that the house was used by the owners, much loved and not just a money making holiday rental. It has also been thoughtfully furnished with in our opinion great taste and the kitchen was a perfect hub any time we were indoors. The bed was generous and very comfortable and the bathroom was all you could need.
The outside of the property is very special, it has lots of space and is very well planted and well cared for. The terrace and the pool offer incredible views where each evening we were greeted by swallows, glowing fireflies and a friendly local cat. The pool was a big hit, large size, deep enough for diving and super comfy sun beds with a view which is pretty hard to beat- the perfect place to either completely relax or muck about in the water!
Casalone offers true seclusion but still within such easy reach of Florence and Siena and the local town of Greve has plenty of restaurant options and a small supermarket. In our opinion it is the owners’ sensitive renovation, the secluded location and the extra effort put in by Ester that make Casalone one hard to beat Tuscan holiday spot. We will definitely be returning!

The Chianti area in Tuscany is one of the most beautiful in the whole region, as well as the most well-known and appreciated by visitors from across the world. Chianti offers a unique landscape, with green, gentle hills covered with wide fields of vineyards and olive groves, small stone villages, characteristic parishes and countryside homes in stone.
