Holiday in a totally different and unique setting

  • 5 of 5

Carmello met us in the nearby town and we followed him to the property. Carmello himself was very helpful and courteous, and very happy to tell us all about the renovation of the trullis and their history. He explained about the heating/water and wifi - and when the wifi went off after a storm brought down some lines, he kept us informed as to how the power company progressed with the repairs. The collection of trullis themselves were lovely, and fabulously renovated for a very comfortable stay. The set-up was a little difficult to work out from the photos and description on the website. Basically the living room, dining room, kitchen, 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom are together - another small living area, 2 bedrooms and another bathroom are attached, but are accessed through a seperate door off the terrace. This part has a seperate heating system and a wifi extender. This worked very well for us, as a couple with a pair of elderly parents, who wanted their own bathroom and a bit more privacy. If we had all been in the first area described, we wouldn't have had as much privacy. If a couple with 2 kids, then just the main part would be fine.

The surrroundings were picturesque, including dry stone walls, olive groves and other trullis nearby. The property itself is at the end of a narrow lane, with a locking metal gate across the drive, felt very private, and very quiet. The pool is very nice, though unheated, so we didn't really take advantage of it!

The situation of the property is ideal for visiting perhaps the 4 most picturesque villages in the region, namely Alberobello, Locorotondo, Cisternino and Martina Franca. The area was very quiet at the end of October. I don't think it is busy in the summer, until you get to the coast. I think if we'd been there in the summer we'd have spent more time at the property and around the pool, which has been done very well.

You won't find a better host than Carmello - he's keen to please his guests and ensure they enjoy their holiday. He also provided some very welcome provisions when we arrived, including some fantastic coffee we got addicted to!

a beautiful trulli renovated with nice taste

  • 5 of 5

Thanks you Carmelo and thanks your dad too for your warm welcome (wine, fruits, milk, coffee, ...), your kindness and availability during our stay :) The place is very quite and closed to very beautiful places in the region , the landscape and the trullo are beautiful. It was conformed to the pictures (except the trullo is separated in two what we can't see on the pictures). It is decorated in details with nice taste.

Next time we'll come in spring or summer rather than in october :)

ancora grazie per tutto

A beautiful, traditional house in a wonderful area

  • 5 of 5

We were very lucky to spend a fortnight at the beautiful Trullo Antico. It had been beautifully restored, and had so much character and space for our family of five to enjoy and relax in. The property is not overlooked in anyway, and very safe and private. It is surrounded by olive orchards and down a private road. We ate outside every day in the lovely eating area, and the pool was very well used by us all. The built in BBQ was also great when eating in. We felt very lucky to be staying in such an idyllic setting!

We were met by the friendly Carmelo on a main road who led us to the trullo, as it would have been very hard to find otherwise. He was really helpful and advised us on places to visit and supermarkets, and visited us following a massive thunderstorm to check on us and to arrange for various workmen to restore wifi and TV.

The area itself is lovely with so much to see and do. Within an easy drive are Locorotondo, Martina Franca and Alberobello which have great restaurants, markets and atmosphere. We found the Eurospar in Locorontondo the easiest supermarket to get to, with a lot of choice. The beaches of the Adriatic and Ionian seas where the sea is lovely and warm were relatively close, especially the Adriatic coast. We liked Torre Canne for sand on this coast, although it could be busy. Other towns really worth visiting were Polignano a Mare and Matera, which were really beautiful. Our kids particularly loved the Aqualand near Monopoli and the Indiana Park (like Go Ape) in Castellana Grotta. Their favourite day out was however to Zoo Safari at Fasano, which was an amazing safari experience with us all feeding the animals who put their heads in our car.

Overall this was a fantastic house and area to experience, and we would like to thank Carmelo and his family for everything.

The Valle d'Itria

Trulli, gently rolling countryside, olive oil, white wine, capocollo ham, easy access to the beaches of the Adriatic and the Ionian seas and half a dozen really super, picuresque towns, including Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Cisternino, Ostuni, Ceglie Messapica and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Alberobello... Welcome to the Valle d'Itria, one of Puglia's most popular and attractive areas!

Set on a high fertile plain in the centre of Puglia, the Valle d'Itria stretches from Putignano in the north to Ostuni in the south, its wooded slopes, vineyards and endless olive groves punctuated by the coned roofs of trulli, those unique cylindrical constructions that are peculiar to the area.

The valley in Valle d'Itria's name is not a a typical valley but rather a Karstic depression that runs between Locorotondo, Cisternino and Martina Franca. This geological phenomenon has also created the fascinatingly beautiful caves of Castellana Grotta, which run for about 3km under the north-eastern edge of the Valle d'Itria.

The caves of Castellana Grotta offer an excellent, educational and fun day trip with children and there are many more diverting activities for children in the area, including the zoo safari and amusement park at Fasano and the magical old town centre of Alberobello, a trulli wonderland that charms and delights old and young alike.

Thanks to Puglia's long slender shape, even if you are in the centre of the Valle d'Itria you are never far from the sea... or should we say seas! An easy drive in either direction - your choice... east or west - will take you to the Adriatic or the Ionian sea, where you can enjoy the long sandy beaches and turquoise waters that contribute to Puglia's great popularity as a holiday destination.

Food lovers too will not be left wanting! Each town in the Valle d'Itria seems to have its own speciality, whether it is the capocollo ham of Martina Franca, the meat bombette of Cisternino (barbecued directly by the butcher for you) or the DOC white wine of Locorotondo. Of course the olive oil is supreme and the cheeses, including the milky delights of burratina, are memorable!

It seems obvious, then, that the Valle d'Itria offers a full and various range of holiday activities for all the family. So why not make it your next destination? Of course, you'll need some fabulous accommodation... and that's what we're here for!
