About Ryan or Barbara

We are a family of nine, with seven children age 18 and under.

Ryan or Barbara purchased this house in 2007

Why Ryan or Barbara chose Shenandoah Valley

While on a weekend ski trip over President’s Day 2004, we fell in love with Massanutten Resort and purchased our first second home, The Retreat at Massanutten. We have now vacationed at Massanutten for more than ten years and used the home for many years to get away from the hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia and Washington, DC, for winter skiing and summer outdoor fun. We now live in Idaho but still vacation often at Massanutten Resort as it remains one of the family's favorite vacation spots. No other resort near Washington, DC offers as wide a variety of activities as Massanutten, and at such a great value for the family to get away together. Since 2004, we have added two additional Massanutten homes to our inventory, including The View at Massanutten, and rented to more than 630 families. We hope you will enjoy The View at Massanutten as much as our other guests have.

What makes this house unique

The View at Massanutten is one of the best homes that we own at Massanutten Resort. Aptly named, The View provides some of the best views of the ski hills on the mountain. The View is the perfect home to accommodate family gatherings, both large and small. As with our other homes, The View is exceptionally well appointed and because of its new construction, is in pristine condition. The View is stocked with activities, such as foosball, movies, an arcade game, kids toys, and books. The View is also uniquely situated at the top of the mountain, right in the middle of all of the activities. It backs up to the George Washington National Forest and is perfect for enjoying your getaway vacation.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The exterior pictures do not do this home much justice. It is simply gorgeous and it was too much house for us. We take a family trip together every year and vowed not to repeat any sites. My family seems perfectly willing to break that vow. LOL.

The Massanutten Water Park is a very impressive, 4 acre water park, with about 42,000 sq. ft. of indoor water park area in Phase One open year round, and 88,000 sq. ft. of outdoor water park area open in the summertime. There are numerous slides inside the park, along with a lazy river and many other water activities. The outside area has a racing slide, a wave pool and several other water amenities. The complex also houses a food court, lockers and showers, a 'state of the art' video arcade, and a full service restaurant. The park is the finest such facility on the East Coast, at a cost of over $30 million dollars. The View is stocked with a full line of brochures providing information on numerous additional area activities, including snow tubing and canoing

Roomy and well-located

  • 4 of 5

The house is in the Massanutten Resort, and has lots of activities and is close to nearby attractions that we all enjoyed. This was an annual family get together, parents, 2 adult kids with spouses, and their kids for a total of 6 adults and 5 teens/kids. The house is quite roomy and laid out well so we were all able to fit comfortably. The view of the mountainside from the deck was gorgeous. The house is well furnished for a large group (large dining table, sofas, dishes, etc). Note that the driveway is STEEP but we did manage to park a car (in the garage) and keep a minivan and an SUV in the driveway. The house is built into the mountainside so there is no yard - just a 10 foot wide area of rocks/dirt behind the house taken up by a small deck and a picnic table. Our little kids still managed to run around though. There were a few minor things (burned out light bulbs, one shower not working, etc) that did not interfere with our stay so we left a note for the on-site manager. There was a more serious issue with the air conditioning. We were there during a heat wave (temps in the high 80s/low 90s) and the temp in the living area (upstairs: 3 bedrooms, living room, kitchen, etc) was 86 degrees. I called the on-site manager and he told me to shut the vents in the downstairs rooms and make sure the upstairs vents were open, and if the unit was running then the air conditioning was working. Even after shutting the vents, the a/c never cooled the area although the outside unit was running almost constantly. Thankfully we were out of the house for the most part during the day, and by opening windows we were able to cool it down almost enough during the night.

Excellent mountain ski home

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed this home for our ski trip to Massanutten. It had plenty of room for the two families and kids who were with us. The views are great. It was fun for the kids to see the snow groomers and snow makers at night on the mountain. The furniture didn't exactly match the photos posted online but it looked like some of the furniture had been updated. The beds were plenty comfortable and we enjoyed having multiple king beds to use. The kitchen and great room was perfect to cook dinner and hang out after a day of skiing. And the kids hiked a bit in the trees behind the home, which was fun for them. It looked like the resort had a lot to do if we stayed longer. Maybe we will come back in the summer for a longer stay. We recommend the home.

Poorly Maintained and Dirty Rental

  • 1 of 5

As a renter of this monstrosity I hesitated to review the rental until we received our deposit. That refund was given to us on Jan. 10th, quite conveniently after Christmas even though we rented the house around Thanksgiving. At one point I decided not to even write a review because it seemed that many guests had already touched on the "special" features of this home, but when the owner gave me a one star rating today as a guest...well you know the old saying about letting sleeping dogs lie. I would like to give a lengthy review of each room and its pitfall, but there are not enough characters allowed for that kind of review. All I can say is that in my 56 years of existence on this planet I have not stayed in a filthier house. It is run down, neglected, drains in the bathtubs are clogged and spew up mold and hair, there are mouse pellets in the kitchen cupboards, mouse pellets in the utensil container, layers of scum built up on the kitchen appliances and around the kitchen sink, ceiling is dripping with cob webs, clusters of insects hiding in corners, carpets filled with hair and chip crumbs, dents and holes in the walls, downstairs "great room" is a foyer, couches had to be covered due to so many disgusting stains, old moldy food under the couches, sheets and towels had to be washed before use (bedding had bodily fluids and towels stunk), sixth bedroom is part of another bedroom and the doors to close that section off STILL don't work, chairs in the kitchen are broken and/or tied together with string, stools at the counter are heavily stained, spindles on the upper outside deck are loose, bedroom windows without window coverings or shades, stove top was heavily stained and dirty, window sills and moldings are covered with dirt and dust. We called the property manager as requested by the owner, and the two times that we discussed the problems with the house he responded like an automated message. Really could have cared less. He sent over a housekeeper late at night on our first day of arrival, but at that point the house was filled with people and luggage so we told her to not bother as it would require us to move everything out, plus a cleaning on that massive of a scale would take days. We did take plenty of pictures as evidence of the home's neglect. By the time we left, the house was much cleaner than when it was given to us. I see nothing but excuses here from the owner, and expect to see them again. Renters beware.

Owner's Response: I have tried to reach out to the author of this review. I spoke with the person who actually rented the home from me and he was very pleased with the home and indicated that others in his group were as well. I did receive some photos of the condition of the house and would gladly post them online as they show how well the home is maintained. Our 24/7 onsite manager has received rave reviews from other guests for being available to address issues large and small at virtually any time of day or night. For whatever reason, whatever concerns were raised, the author did not want them addressed. The home is well cleaned and we have updated many of the aspects of this home, including new chairs for the dining room table and new furniture such as couches upstairs and downstairs. Some of the other comments simply don't ring true at all, as no renter has ever complained about the showers, which are in excellent condition. We do have to reset the sliding doors at times, which can fall off the tracks. But that is an easy fix and usually only happens when a renter slams them too hard to close them. Overall, it is disappointing that none of these issues were raised to our attention so we could address them during the stay, and I have not been able to speak directly with this guest since she is not the person who actually rented from me. I don't know what her expectations were, but we have done our best to address any of the concerns that were raised for future guests.

Furniture broken up and dirty

  • 1 of 5

We will not be going back. It is a big house but the furniture is very run down and broken. 2 of the 8 dining room chairs had rope tied around the legs to hold them together. Also, 2 of the showers would not turn on. I am not a plumber but it appeared the diverter's were broken. We made the best of our stay but overall we were let down with the overall condition of the home.

Owner's Response: We appreciate you taking time to provide your feedback on our home. We agree that this home is spacious and a great home. It has the best views on the mountain. We have purchased new furniture for the home in February 2017, including new kitchen chairs, new bunkbeds, new couches and new games downstairs. We have checked the showers and confirmed that there is no problem with the showers working. We have had a diverter underneath the tub faucet but have changed that out so the diverter is even easier to use and there should no longer be any confusion. We strive to keep this home in good condition given the use it receives from larger parties. We also have an onsite manager available 24/7 to accommodate any needs that arise.
