Exceeded Our Expectations!

  • 5 of 5

We spent our first family vacation with our young children at Far Gaze Point and have already booked for next year. The cottage is a perfect balance between rustic and modern amenities. I really appreciated the washer and dryer, my husband loved the AC, and the shower is great! We loved the knick knacks and eclectic furniture and the photo album describing the history of the family, house, and land. My little kids loved the daddy long legs (what's a vacation in Michigan without them?), the tiny toads, the family of deer (!), the fireflys, and the butterflys. The land the cottage sits on is gorgeous! Plenty of room to run, play, and relax. The owners are gracious and available for anything we needed. My husband keeps describing it as, "close to everything but feels like miles away from anywhere." Saugatuck-Douglas has great food, ice cream, and family friendly activities. We had a perfect vacation here!

Not what we expected

  • 2 of 5

Positives about the property: quiet & out of the way, yet close to all the action

Negatives: LOTS of spiders & bugs, screened-in porch was too dirty to sit in, VERY cramped quarters (badly in need of decluttering--way too much furniture & knickknacks for such a tiny space), kitchen was not "fully stocked"--tried to make pizza & spaghetti but there were no pizza pans, pizza cutter, or strainer for pasta.

Owner's Response: We are sorry the guests felt as they did about the furnishings... this is, after all, a small 5 generation family cottage - clearly described and pictured on our home away listing. It is decorated at the discretion of the owners with paintings, photographs, rugs and family memories and as can be seen in the reviews by other guests, most complement the home-like atmosphere. We do not claim in our ad that the small kitchen is "fully stocked". It has a stove, microwave, refrigerator (we supply regular and decaf coffee), and a dishwasher, and an assortment of pots, pans, dishes, etc. Each guest is told at check in that if there are any cooking items they would like to have which are not to be found in the kitchen ask us, as we likely have them at the adjacent house (300 feet away). At no time did the guests ask for a pizza pan or strainer, which were available had they been requested. At no time did they contact us during their stay with ANY issues about the rental. Our cleaner spends about two hours between each guest vacuuming, cleaning, and making sure the cottage is in shape for the next visitors. We ask each guest to bring their own sheets and towels ,and do not allow smoking or pets at the cottage. Again, we are sorry that these guests were not satisfied with the result. They appear to have been the exception. We hope their next visit to Saugatuck finds lodging more up to their expectations. We do not believe anything in our listing implies our cottage is anything other than what it is... as other reviewers have said: " The home was well appointed..." "The cottage was clean, the kitchen appliances, washer, and dryer all worked. When we had a minor problem with the TV, the owner came over and fixed it." " Far Gaze cottage is amazing - everywhere we looked there are momentos from the past. The grounds are great - we had grandkids playing wiffle ball and tossing bags for corn hole. There is plenty of yard room for family fun." " The cottage has been remodeled for comfort but retains the charm and nostalgia of the old family cottage. The kitchen held all the supplies we could need, and everything was perfectly clean."

Quiet, picturesque

Our family loved this family cottage packed full of Saugatuck history. Our grandsons call it the I Spy cabin and can hardly wait to come back. Thanks Chris and Carroll for your hospitality.

Great Stay at Far Gaze Point

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at FGP! The quiet get away is exactly what we needed for our fall break. The home was well appointed and the owners were wonderful. We felt at home immediately. We loved learning about the history of the cottage and our boys liked all the games that were available. We would recommend this to our family and friends and next time we stay we plan on bringing more family.

Great Location, Well Kept Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this cottage in late October. The leaves were still turning and it was cool in the evenings.

Prior to arriving, the owners provided us with a visitors guide and some other information about the area. When we checked in they showed us around the cottage, where things were and what were things to be sure to do around Saugatuck.

We had a great experience, and would come back again. They were even so kind as to mail us our phone charger that we left behind!
