Have you ever wanted a holiday free of cluttered beaches, high-rises and crowded pool areas?

Welcome to Montaña Rosa, your own private home from home where you can relax in the shady corners of your own private garden, lie in the warmth of the sun beside your own pool and dine on the nearby terrace with food fresh from your own barbeque.

It's intimate, peaceful and relaxing.

Set among the stunning, mountainous scenery of the Axarquia, Montaña Rosa is a large, self-contained casita nestled in a lush, sub-tropical garden with every facility for a relaxing break from life's stresses.

With a large bedroom and ensuite bathroom, you will immediately be drawn into the sense of peace and tranquility that imbues both home and garden. Relax by your private pool with some light food and wine or under the shade of the outdoor room with its long, low table and comfortable bamboo seating. Bring a good book to the table under the vine and feel time slow down or sit at the little table in front of the stone garden and plan your tomorrows. Later you can fire up the barbeque, cook a locally produced steak or fish from the market, and enjoy it all with a glass of fruity Rioja at the dining area near the pool. Time is your own, though it moves more slowly here than you may be used to.

Surrounded by olive and almond groves with wonderful walking paths and vistas right down to the coast. Long beach at Torre del Mar just 30 minutes away and plenty of white villages nearby to explore such as Alfarnate, Alfarnatejo, Periana and Comares - all beautiful in their own way and maintained to a high standard with planters and boxes of flowering plants. Each have their own regular festivals celebrating some aspect for which the town or village will be well known, from Alfarnate's cherry harvest to Periana's gloriously fruity olive oil. From gazpacho soup to the birthday of San Isidro, there's always a cause for celebrating something or someone with music, wine and food and the genuine bonhomie for which the locals are justly famous.

There are walking trails for the fit and not so fit, mountain climbing, off-road cycling routes, motor cycle routes along the rugged coastline, tours of Malaga's inspiring historical sites, art galleries - including the Picasso Museum - the magnificent historical botanical gardens at La Concepción (voted one of the best in Europe) and a bewildering array of restaurants, tapas bars and delis all on our doorstep or just a short drive away.

It's yours to discover and make your own, at your own pace, in your own time.

About Tony Hartnett

My wife, a professional artist, and I moved here after falling in love with this most unique and tranquil part of Spain, its warm and hospitable people and the ever-changing colours of the landscape. I gave up a career in graphic design to concentrate on this new venture, bringing more people into contact with a Spain not found in the glossy brochures. A vibrant, close-knit and welcoming Spain that still retains so much of what has sadly been lost to the stresses of a world in a hurry..

Tony Hartnett purchased this apartment in 2014

Why Tony Hartnett chose Alfarnatejo

Montaña Rosa is a peaceful, relaxing and intimate experience, very different to the common perception of Spain as a place where crowded high-rise apartments clutter the coastline. Here you will be in touch with nature, with tranquility and with the traditions that still predominate in the towns and villages around us. Behind us and to the sides are the majestic mountains of Malaga's Nature Reserve. Straight ahead the valley meanders between further hills, layered in shades of pale mauve and blue, down to the coast where the Meditteranean sparkles in the sun.

High above the mountains eagles soar on the updrafts, searching for prey. Along the mountain paths Spring and Summer bring bursts of colour in a huge array of flowers and shrubs or fig trees laden down with sweet, sun-warmed fruit. Later in the year pomegranates, oranges and sweet kaki fruit are harvested, along with the olives that go to make the wonderful, fruity oil. We're surrounded by an abundance of glorious, natural produce.

What makes this apartment unique

Andalusia enjoys one of the world's healthiest climates and Montaña Rosa, at an elevation of over six bundred metres, has both the warmth of the sun and the cleanliness of pure mountain air that can invigorate mind, body and spirit.

Wonderful, a perfect escape.

Absolutely wonderful stay! A little piece of heaven on earth. Tony and Denise are lovely and very knowledgeable about the area. The casita is very pretty and very very comfortable. The garden is secluded and a great sun trap. There a lots of places to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet and the sun. We found it very relaxing to sit in the evenings and list to the goat bells and the other country sounds. Tony recommended we try the local tavern for food and we found Marie-Carmen and Enrique lovely people and the food good. It helps to have a little Spanish as they don't speak any English but Denise has provided a list of foods in Spanish and English which was very helpful. We would definitely recommend this wonderful place to anyone wanting a very peaceful, relaxing and romantic getaway!!!

Rural Andulucia

  • 3 of 5

Although having traveled widely in Europe and beyond, this was our first visit to mainland Spain. The accommodation is situated in a quiet and rural area with a delightful garden for relaxation and enjoying the sun. The highlight of the trip for us was a visit to Granada, about an hour by car . The city is most impressive with attractive bars/restaurants. We booked a guided tour of the Alhambra, a 3 hour tour to all parts which was really worthwhile and very informative. It is an outstanding place with beautiful gardens. We also enjoyed our visit to Comares, a hill top town which takes quite a drive to get to but certainly worth the effort. There are numerous other smaller villages nearby but finding good restaurants was rather difficult though a good local bar within walking distance (100metres) providing food. The kitchen facilities at the property are somewhat limited with no traditional hob/oven so eating out or using the BBQ are best options other than simple meals. This is made up for by the friendly owners Denise and Tony who are very happy to help with information and provided a welcome pack of food for our late arrival. We went in late April and were fortunate with sun and warm temperatures every day so all in all a good introduction to exploring more of Andulucia and Spain. Good value.

Owner's Response: Hello Anne. Thank you for your comments. I'm glad you enjoyed your first trip to Spain, and as I've mentioned in our listing it's quite a different Spain from what can be expected on the costas. There are several excellent restaurants nearby, all within a short drive and all typically Spanish in nature where the food served is sourced locally from one of the most beautiful and scenic parts of Spain. Had you asked for further recommendations we would have been happy to give them. On the question of the kitchen, all of the facilities are itemised in our listing on this website for potential visitors. On top of those there are further items of cookware which we pointed out to you, including a multi-tier food steamer for fish and vegetables, a slow cooker for stews, a plug-in hob, a hot stone slab for steaks or fish and a halogen oven, all of which have been used successfully by previous guests and with which any variety of meals can be prepared. Thank you again for visiting and best regards to you and Keith.

Onze vlucht had tweeënhalf uur vertraging waardoor we plots middernacht aankwamen.

Beautiful hidden gem

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I spent a wonderful week here returning last weekend, neither of us wanted to leave. The visit enhanced by Denise and Tony's generosity, kindness and helpfulness. We spent the week eating, swimming in the fabulous pool, and catching up on much needed rest, but Montana Rosa is equally well placed for sight seeing, and exploring and experiencing the real Spain. The pictures of this property do not do it justice, it is simply beautiful, set with the stunning mountains as a backdrop. A big thank you to Tony and Denise for making our week extra special.
