Stoer Villa is a recently refurbished traditional home, that is spacious and cosy - ideal for families and large groups. A perfect base for outdoor activities, Stoer has stunning views of the sea and mountains, great fishing, and a beautiful sandy beaches.
Stoer Villa is a late 19th century stone house, with a modern kitchen extension and large front and back gardens. The interior has been completely refurbished, but in keeping with the style of building. Downstairs we have three main rooms (kitchen, dining room and living room) and two bathrooms. The kitchen is brand new and comfortably sits eight. The dinning room is an attractive space, with traditional furniture, and sits a further six. The living room has a wood-burning stove, comfortable sofas and a large flat-screen TV (smart-TV and satellite). Of the four upstairs bedrooms, one is en suite and one is set up as a kids' room. The bedroom above the kitchen has a double-bed, the kids' room has a bunk bed and the other two rooms have twin beds. The living room sofa also doubles as a bed for extra guests or those who find stairs difficult. All three bathrooms are equipped with modern showers.
Whether you are looking for relaxing family orientated activities or more adventurous outdoor pursuits, Stoer is the perfect base. There is a beautiful white sand beach less than 250 m from the front door, and two others within 3 miles. There are many easier coastal walks, with fantastic sea views across to the Minch to the Outer Hebrides. The quiet single lane roads around Stoer are excellent for cycling and provide spectacular mountain and sea views. Several tour operators offer boat tours out of Lochinver, pony trekking, and various other activities, such as Lama trekking. The area is popular for fishing. You can fish for Brown trout on any of the smaller lochs for free, and salmon fishing is available on Loch Assynt and the River Assynt. There is also excellent sea fishing. For the hard-core outdoor enthusiast, you can hike up Sulliven, one of Scotland's most remote summits, or any of the other hills to the north and south. The coast is superb for sea kayaking (kayaks can be rented locally), and the area is well known for rock climbing. Excellent longer cycling trips can be made along the coastal roads.
The house comfortably accommodates six adults and two children (or other similar arrangements), but could fit more at a squeeze. With assistance, a wheelchair guest could manage the ground floor and use the sofa-bed, but the house is not strictly wheelchair friendly. All bedrooms are fitted with smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Pets are permitted, but smoking is not permitted in the house.

Although there are public buses, we recommend that to enjoy Stoer it is best to have independent transport, either bicycles or a car. We have ample free car parking space.
The nearest airport is Inverness. To get from the airport to Stoer, first take the A96 towards Inverness city, then turn north along the A9, over the Kessock Bridge. At the first roundabout after the bridge, take the A835 exit to Ullapool. From Ullapool continue to follow the A835 and then the A837 to Lochinver. About 1/4 mile before entering the village of Lochinver, there is a turning to the right (B896), which is sign-posted to Stoer. This is a single-track road with passing places. Continue along this road, following signs to Stoer, for 7 miles. Stoer is a small hamlet about 1 mile after the Clachtoll caravan site. Stoer Villa is the second house on the left and the parking is beyond the house, behind the old stone stables. From Inverness airport it takes approximately 2.5 hours by car to Stoer.
There are daily buses between Stoer and Ullapool, and from there to Inverness.

About Rhett D. Harrison
Currently I live in Lusaka, Zambia where I work for the World Agroforestry Centre's East & Southern Africa regional office. I am a tropical ecologist focusing on landscape restoration. I am married with two daughters aged 6 and 9. I grew up near Ardgay about an hour from Lochiver and decided to buy Stoer Villa as a property in the UK to return to for holidays with my family.
Rhett D. Harrison purchased this House in 2012
Why Rhett D. Harrison chose Highland
The NW highlands of Scotland is a beautiful area. As a school boy I used to hike all over the highlands, but I keep coming back to this corner. Stoer is exceptionally well located, being secluded yet close enough to Lochinver for conveniences, and Stoer Villa itself is a lovely old cottage with a large garden. When we bought the house, it was quite run down but we have renovated it in keeping with the style and now its a lovely house.
What makes this House unique
Stoer Villa is really a lovely house and the location could not be better for family holidays. We offer a 10% discount to returning guests.

Lovely cottage in a great place to get away
We arrived at Stoer knowing little of the area and a bit worried that we would be stuck indoors and fighting midgees. We were very pleasantly surprised.
The villa itself is a lovely house and fitted our family of six easily. The house is well equipped and maintained with a lovely walled garden for the kids. We were very comfortable there!
Stoer provided a surprising amount of things to do from beach life and rockpooling to archeological talks on the local broch. There are plenty of places to walk and lots of nice cafes and restaurants (the fresh crab at Kylesku was a favourite). We stayed for two weeks and only towards the end were we starting to have trouble finding things to do (the kids were happy on the beach regardless).
My one tip would be to stock up on essentials at Ullapool as it is a long drive back. Lochinver store is well supplied but for more speciality items like giant sized nappies you may need Ullapool. Also if you are arriving on Saturday be aware that most shops and cafes are shuton Sunday.
In conclusion I think it is likely we will be back!
Comfortable and well equipped house in beautiful location
We knew the area and wanted a house big enough for 8 adults. The house met our needs perfectly with enough bathrooms, a washing machine and a kitchen equipped for enthusiastic cooks! The house was very clean when we arrived and everything worked well. The sitting room was comfortable and we watched the olympics in the evening. There is plenty of outside space for parking and sitting outside. There is a beautiful beach a few minutes walk away, and even a small shop open in the summer within walking distance.
The house is on a winding single track road about 7 miles from Lochinver. There are other houses close by and scattered along the road so it doesn't feel isolated, but you leave these behind in moments when you start walking.
We went to the area mainly for the walking but one of our group took a mountain bike and we loved the swimming and fishing. We saw otters on our fist walk, and lots of seals.
A well equipped, nicely furnished and decorated, modernised house with character
Stoer Villa surpassed our expectations. The house, garden and location suited adults and children alike. The large kitchen area with tables and chairs to accommodate 8+ was the centre of most indoor activity. The dining room and sitting room enabled other quieter activities to take place. Bedroom arrangements suited us well and three bathrooms was more than adequate.
We would like to return.
Erholsamer Aufenthalt in gut eingerichtetem Haus
Stoer Lighthouse is an especially popular outing and has a good cafe. Otherwise people enjoy the beach, hiking or cycling, and fishing.
