There's plenty to do for all ages..... swimming, suntanning, building sand castles or long walks along the water. As the day winds down enjoy the sunset over Lake Michigan, then head down to the beach to toast marshmallows under the starry sky. Away from bright city lights the sky comes alive with thousands of twinkling stars, it's magnificent!
The house is furnished with antiques which give this home a cozy ambiance and the 8' farmhouse table comfortably seats ten; 2 smaller tables and counter bar stools accommodate at least 6 more.
This home is set on a beautiful wooded dune with 19 steps leading down to the house from the large lighted parking area & another 18 steps take you from the house down to the bottom of a very small sand dune. There are no stairs on the dune, but it takes about 25 small steps to get to the top & then it gently slopes down to the beach.
The front deck faces west affording spectacular views of the water, Manitou & Fox Islands, & freighters which travel frequently through this area. This is the site of the treacherous Straights of Manitou which caused many a shipwreck in earlier times.
After living in various parts of the country for 16 yrs. we moved back to Michigan with our children & settled in Traverse City where Lauri grew up. We wanted to be close to family & to enjoy the beauty and slower pace of life in Northern Michigan.
The Owner purchased this house in 1998
We looked for property in Leelanau County because it's still pristine and undeveloped. Jim's parents had a cottage on Lake Huron when he was growing up & he loved hearing the big waves at night. So when we found this place on Lake Michigan with 300' of frontage we were ecstatic.
Pictures don't do justice to our property.... .....the first time I saw the beach I was blown away! My husband had found it with a realtor & I was lukewarm about seeing it because the realtor's pictures weren't flattering. But when I saw the house I loved it, the setting was really unique, not at all like the pictures. The whole property was just incredible.
In person the house looks very different from the pictures, especially those showing the exterior. Twice we've had friends from L.A. come stay & they both said it looked totally different from the website & they couldn't believe how beautiful it was in person.
Our house is so peaceful and relaxing, I love being out there and wish I could go out more often. But we rent the house to help out with the taxes so our time is limited. I like the fact that our beach is usually empty, rarely anyone even walking by, so we have privacy , not crowds of people. We can truly get away from all the busyness of life and just relax.
When family & friends visit they are obsessed with searching for beautiful rocks & of course petoskey stones. I can spend hours everyday in search of the most amazing stones & a friend of ours lacquered his to show off their colors. He has a bowl full on his coffee table.
I'm not much of a beach walker but others in the family walk everyday & sometimes walk all the way out to the end of Cathead Point & back .
Of course everyone loves the sunsets, they are incredible on Lake Michigan. But they're especially beautiful from our deck because we're on the dune & raised up a little higher. It really is a spectacular sight which I never tire of seeing over and over again.
