Restaurant details: Restaurants ranging from Bar and Grill to Family Style to Fine Dining are as close as 2 miles to 10 miles.

The Cabin Property: The atmosphere is casual, fishing for Sunnies, Crapies, Northern and Bass.. Swimming is best in late June through mid August, unless you don't mind cool water.

Gatherings around the campfire in the evenings is a must. We provide the wood. (No wood from out of the area, please, to protect the forest from infections and pests causing infestations. (It's the law).

Sunsets are beautiful, stars are brilliant and the rays of the moon falling across the water is peaceful and serene. Fall to sleep with the call of the loons.

Get away from it all or take a short jaunt to town to mix it up with the locals and other area visitors. Lively entertainment available most weekends. It's YOUR CHOICE.

About Ruth or Fred Strohmeier

Fred's Grandfather purchased the property in 1935. Grandpa, Dad and 2 Uncles built the cabin in 1955-56 by hand with trees off the property. They cut, pealed and bleached the logs devoting many hours when not working their regular jobs so that we could enjoy the outdoors with shelter to return to in inclement weather.

We enjoy observing and interacting with nature. It is our place to get away-from-it all, not worry about getting all prim and proper unless we want to. Of course, we can get creative and find many things to do outdoors and attending local activities available in the communities around us too.

Our Grandchildren love coming to the cabin, exploring the woods, swimming, boating, fishing, wild berry picking in season, eating well, making up games, running around, building camp fires, making smores and listening to stories; some real some made up (if you can imagine that).

Ruth or Fred Strohmeier purchased this cabin in 1955

Why Ruth or Fred Strohmeier chose Minnesota

This is a unique experience. No hustle or bustle, good fishing and swimming, private location, limited noise of other people and their kids. Our goal is to provide a vacation experience with positive memories to take home.

What makes this cabin unique

Screen house among the trees to enjoy lake breezes without our famous mosquitos and direct sun. Great for lunches, reading books, and board games.

Kego Cabin: Spring 2016

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was very nice. We are repeat guests and have always enjoyed each visit. Ruth & Fred are wonderful hosts and always have the cabin and grounds in perfect condition. The peace and quiet of the location is important to us. The lake is only a few steps from the cabin and the dock works great for your fishing boat. There is even a pontoon available if you are so inclined for a trip around the lake. Outstanding golfing and dining are located nearby but dinner grilled on the Weber is hard to beat. A small fire in the fire pit for cooking s'mores after dark is a great ending to a low key day.

Labor Day Visit: 2015

  • 5 of 5

Our visit to the Kego Cabin was again perfect. We have been vacationing here since 2007 and each visit has been everything we are looking for. The cabin & grounds are alway in great shape. The key here is the peace & tranquility of our stay. The owners, Ruth & Fred, could not be more accommodating & friendly. Our 8 month old granddaughter Piper experienced her 1st boat ride & swim in the lake. Already looking forward to our next visit.

The perfect, private getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had such a wonderful time at this cabin. It was very private, had plenty of space, went boating everyday, fishing, and oftentimes felt like we had the lake to ourselves! An "active" day both during the week and weekends was two other boats including ours on the lake. Plenty of space for sleeping, and having a washer/dryer there was an added bonus for families who do a lot of laundry! There is also filtered water in the kitchen. About a 10-15 min drive to the nearest grocery store and about 45 min - 1 hour away from Brainerd. Thanks for a great stay, Fred and Ruth! You were very accommodating and welcoming. We would recommend this spot to anyone looking for a cabin vacation.

Owner's Response: We are privileged to be able to share this beautiful, private spot with so many nice family's and couples who otherwise couldn't experience the peace and tranquility of the area. If you're stressed at work, have a ton of responsibilities and need time for yourself, this is the place for you.

When One Week Isn't Enough

  • 5 of 5

This is our third visit to Fred and Ruth's charming cabin but our second time booking two weeks back-to-back. We're getting spoiled, we may need to throw in a third week just to handle withdrawal. The cabin offers plenty of sleeping room and one of these times we hope to have our children and grandchildren visit since there are three unused beds going to waste. Fred and Ruth are the perfect hosts especially allowing our golden doodle to join us. We had a blast fishing, kayaking and canoeing. While the weather in Cross Lake was close to 90 it was at least 15 to 20 degrees cooler on Kego...natural air conditioning. They added a larger newer television which pretty much is wasted on us, since the outdoors is what draws us to Kego. We kept the campfire burning, relaxed to the sounds of nature and I was lucky enough to plow through 8 books during our vacation. Everything is kept in tip top shape and very clean. They even offer a food processor, electric skillet for frying your catch or morning pancakes, coffee maker and well-seasoned cast-iron skillets. We truly are in heaven when we leave the cities and head to Kego Lake and Fred and Ruth's cabin.
