Spectacular view, private getaway

If you want to get off the beaten path, this is as good as you will find! This is a remote gem, a big comfortable home with an awesome infinity pool overlooking the Pacific. Ocean front views from every room, peaceful serenity at it’s best.

You will need a 4x4 to get to the house, and it’s all part of the fun. This was our 2nd visit, there will be more.

Stunning property

This house is 150% as advertised! The biggest challenge to Costa Rica in general is travel into and through country. It's not a quick in and out, however, SO WORTH THE EFFORT. I would never stay less than 7-8 days. The hosts from owner to manager are very helpful. When we arrived we missed a flight which put us into the house at around 8p when we had planned on 3pm. Nadja had beer and snacks and even ordered us pizzas as we had three starving teenage boys. She was life saver that night! She also was available by text for questions at any time. We are from North Carolina and have Sprint as our cell carrier, we had free cell service in most places in CR. Wifi at the house was perfect. The kitchen was full equipped and I used it to cook most of the week. A few important facts. FIRST, have plenty of cash, many places, especially restaurants ONLY take cash and although you can withdraw cash from your bank w a passport, the ATMs are very undependable so it's best just to bring what you need. The stores have a basic selection of foods, plenty of meats-veggies and starches as needed. Good wine and liquor selection, paper goods, etc. Ronnies takes credit cards for groceries. Prices aren't much different than US. We went fishing one day and had more fish than we could eat so we were able to share w our favorite local. Due to missing our flight Budget car rental at Tambor airport gave our car away. However, I will admit using taxis to and from the house was just fine. They always were there within 10/20mins of request. Plan to spend the bulk of your time at this house because it's too nice not to enjoy. VERY private. We raced back to house everyday for sunset b/c it was spectacular everyday. The table that sits outside of the living area was where we lived - Favorite things we did away from house: fishing, waterfall hikes at Montezuma, surfing/hanging out at Playa Carmen, breakfast at the Bakery in town. Santa Teresa is situated on an unpaved road. ATVs and motorcycles main mode of transport. Bring good hiking shoes, a backpack and basic clothing, people are having breakfast in swimsuits which is the appeal for us, we aren't fancy. All restaurants very laid back and mostly outdoor, but GREAT food everywhere!

Nadja connected me with a yoga instructor that came to the house, they have surf instructors you can find easily at the beach. Banana Bar was super fun on Friday night. Enjoy relax, unplug and find your soul shine here! Thanks Jeremy

Not as Represented

This house has great potential and many lovely features. However, it is in great need of upkeep and repairs. We enjoyed the pool although there was no lighting for nighttime swimming. There was no in pool lighting and only one of 7 lower patio lights worked making it dangerous after dark. The house is very interesting architecturally but hasn't been maintained. None of the lights over the kitchen worked, some fans don't work and were needed since there is no ac in the main living area. Sliding glass doors were very flimsy and difficult to lock (we used tissues so the locks didn't fall down) No screens. The upstairs bathroom sink doesn't drain well and the water sits there for a while. We didn't mind the insects, found them interesting, but since there are areas to the house that are open to the outdoors at all times (bathroom) there were rat droppings (kitchen counters) and bats frequented the house in the evening. The housecleaner comes every other day (she was lovely) , not everyday as stated in the VRBO description. Also, the information sheet that was left for us had incorrect contact numbers. I dialed the number and received a recording saying it was invalid. Nadja did give me the correct number a few days later. WE were unable to connect to SONOS (we brought our music down) since the instructions on the sheet left for us were wrong. Nadja did send the correct information but it was too complicated to figure out. When we tried to connect it said we needed the owner's password and email address. I would recommend helping people connect when she shows the house. Apparently there are some electricity issues with the house. One day the power was off for the whole day (weather was fine) and we lost all our food in the fridge. When Juan Carlos got home in the evening he fixed it. Basically, I cannot recommend this house until repairs and upkeep are completed. It seriously needs an investment of money to bring it up to the level of the description in VRBO> Martha and Chuck

Stunning house and location

  • 5 of 5

First off, Maipais is definitely off the beaten path. If you're looking for a place to get away from the rat race of the world, Maipais is as good as I've seen. Rugged dirt roads, friendly non-pretentious people, a beautiful local culture and incredible unspoiled natural beauty.

The house is stunning. Beautiful open area with 20' ceilings for the kitchen and living room. Nicely decorated and well appointed with everything you need. Beds were comfy with good quality sheets and pillows. The infinity pool and decks were truly awesome with great outdoor furniture to lounge on. And can't forget the upstairs bathroom with the huge covered, but open air shower. The house is kept very clean by the staff.

Nadja (the concierge) along with Juan Carlos and Brenda (maintenance and cleaning) were completely unobtrusive but also very very helpful. If you get a chance, take an ATV tour with Xtreme sports in maipais. Johan is the owner there and if you can, get Jeremy to be your guide as we had a blast on a 9 hour private tour of the region.

Some final notes

* Make sure to have a 4WD vehicle as you won't be able to get to the house without one.

* Costa Rica has ants, geckos, lizards, monkeys.etc. If you are a squeamish person who is used to only traveling to five star resorts, maipais and this house is probably not for you as it is in the jungle.

* Google maps works great 90℅ or so of the time, but the two times it didn't it nearly took us into a river at night and to the wrong ferry on our way home. Use common sense and you'll be ok.

* We can't wait to come back in 2017.

Beautiful, comfortable home with a spectacular view! Lush tropical forest surrounding a perfect infinity pool. We spent a lot of time just floating and listening to the ocean waves. Comfortable beds and a kitchen ready for anything, and even that room came with expansive views of the Pacific. Nadja, Brenda, and Don Carlos were available for anything we needed, taking off all the worry that comes with some vacations. It was a perfect, private and remote retreat for us.

To be sure, you will need a 4 wheel drive to get around Mal Pais, but that just added to the fun! This part of Costa Rica isn't a drive to the city beach, it's an adventure for sure among friendly, welcoming people and incredible natural beauty.

For food there are plenty of small local restaurants, a Pali grocery store just a few kilometers out of town on the way in, or have a chef prepare your table any night.

The pictures don't do justice to this great vacation home, and we can't wait to go back and take more of our own!

Your home is SPECTACULAR!!

  • 5 of 5

Dear Jeremy,

We've had a fantastic time! We are filled to the brim with sun and sand and Imperial and more food than we could possibly justify. Your home is spectacular. In particular, I appreciate the clean, bright, minimal yet super tasteful feel, to say nothing of the HUGE ocean view.

We were well-cared for by Juan Carlos, Nadja and Mirna and now must face the somber task of returning to reality. Luckily it's summer at home so we still have lots to look forward too.

Many thanks for checking in and for all of your help AND for your stellar home in Mal Pais.

About Jeremy Clark

Hello all! I first bought a vacation home in Mal Pais, Costa Rica in 2005 after I rented a villa for a week with friends. I was so amazed with the area and fell in love with the atmosphere so much that I ended up buying the house I rented. Since then I have truly loved to share this place with friends, family and guests through rentals. We stayed so busy that I was having to turn people away. So instead of turning them away because our home was so busy I decided to start a luxury vacation rental company. I now work with over 20 homes in the Mal Pais and Santa Teresa area. My passion is to be able to find that perfect home for our guests so that they also can show up in a home and feel the same way I did when I fisrt arrived to Mal Pais. I would love to help you find that dream home and help you create that perfect vacation. I have met so many wonderful people since 2005 and it just keeps growing. I would love to help so please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Casa Pez Volador is truly a special place with unbelievable views. We've stayed in Mal Pais a few times before but never with so much style. This house truly defines environment-inspired architectural design.

Vaulted ceilings, massive balconies, huge open-concept kitchen/great room, floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors revealing the Pacific Ocean from every room and the large infinity pool are some of the highlights of this house. The open air bathroom/shower is pretty awesome too!

Watching the sunsets from the pool or any number of the balconies became our nightly ritual never to be missed. No matter how much fun we were having during the day, cruising on quads, swimming, surfing or exploring, we always made sure to make it back to the house in time for those gorgeous sunsets… with an ice cold beer in hand of course.

The on-site staff were so warm and friendly too. They were always within an ear-shot's range if we ever needed anything but we still felt as if we were the only people on that mountain, day or night.

We will most definitely be back. No need to look any further as far as we're concerned, we've found our “Mal Pais Paradise Palace!” Pura Vida!
