The ancient Irish name of this group of farmhouse cottages reveals a lot. It’s “Barralach”, meaning “over the lake”. The lake in question is one of Ireland’s most beautiful, lying in a special area of conservation. Barralach enjoys spectacular views over the lake and up to the dramatic peaks of the Macgillycuddy Reeks or mountains. [Barralach is pronounced “baralack”. A fluent Irish speaker will render the final “k” very softly! Try it; you can do it too!] This secluded settlement is nevertheless close to the hikers’ Kerry Way and only ten minutes from the shops and pubs of Glenbeigh village. Three of the cottages provide separate accommodation for the different elements of your party, with privacy and independence. The 14-seater dining table, however, and the great wood stoves in the very spacious Main Cottage bring the entire group joyfully together. Our guidebooks and maps ensure you make the most of your outings from Barralach. And if the weather turns inclement, the large assortment of wellington boots, raincoats and extensive collections of books, videos and games will keep you going. Immersed in nature, you will delight in Barralach’s mountain sheep, hares, rabbits, weasels, birds & magically ever-changing views. You'll love our crystalline deep-spring water. Our housekeeper may be available to provide excellent meals of the finest local fare "a la Barralach!".
I stayed at the Barralach cottages with my family -- 7 adults in all -- and we all had a wonderful time. The property and views are absolutely gorgeous! The cottages are cozy while also providing plenty of space for a large group. The housekeeper was very helpful in coordinating our arrival and departure and Peter, the owner, sent information about the house and area ahead of time which was much appreciated.
We loved staying up on the hill -- with the views of lakes and hills -- and enjoyed going out for dinner in Glenbeigh and other neighboring towns. There's plenty to do and see in the area!
Thanks for everything -- we had a wonderful trip!
My family of 12 stayed the Barralach cottages for a week and they were everything we could have hoped for. There were plenty of beds and bathrooms to accommodate our group. Everything was clean, comfortable, and in good working order. The main cottage made a great place for everyone to hang out until people were ready to retire for the night in their own rooms. The kitchen had all the appliances and tableware you could possibly need - and we put it to good use, cooking dinner at least half the nights we were there. The dining room table was big enough to allow all of us to eat dinner together and also served as a good gaming table for our nightly game of dominoes or cards. As others have mentioned in their reviews, the views are spectacular and there are hiking trails that lead right from the house to the top of the hill for even more viewing and picture taking opportunities. My nephew got engaged on our trip and the backdrop provided spectacular engagement pictures (my husband is an amateur photographer). I would highly recommend the cottages for anyone visiting southern Ireland. And Peter, the host, was very responsive with the few questions we had during our stay. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
There are just too many compliments for this property! I will start with the view, which was about the most spectacular of any place I have ever stayed! Whether blue sky or rain, the view was something that I caught myself staring out over repeatedly. As for the accommodations, they were perfect for our group. Each of the cabins is well appointed and has clearly had great time and effort put into their restoration. The main lodge was an amazing place to gather, whether it was around the enormous dinner table to catch up with new cousins, or enjoying drinks and music by the wood stove. We took numerous hikes and walks right from the property, and each offered stunning views that were uniquely Irish. Having been to Glenbeigh for numerous family reunions over the past 20 years, this was by far our best accommodations, and I can only hope that we will be able to come back to the "Sheep Farm" again!
We spent a week at Barralach after a four day stay in Dublin. I’m back home now but can’t stop wishing I was still there! Barralach is an absolutely amazing and wonderful place. I had an idea of the beauty of the cottages from the pictures on this site, but in person, it’s breathtaking. The rest of the group didn’t really know where I was bringing them so they were blown away by the location and beauty of Barralach. Every time we drove up the winding road was like doing it the first time because we couldn’t believe we were so lucky to be staying there. The cottages are all well furnished, very comfortable, and include some eclectic touches; all of which made for a great stay. The kitchen and washer/dryer met all our needs. It was lots of fun to shop in the local supermarket (Aldi in Killorglin) and eat some of our meals at the cottage. The views outside are incredible: the ocean, lake, mountains, and sheep are all in one view and that’s the thing that really makes Barralach special. Some of us hiked up the hill behind the cottage several times. There’s a little, hidden waterfall within the hill and my son loved finding that. The small woods around the house are really fun to explore too; the amount of green and moss in there again added to the magical nature of the place. And there’s plenty of room for fun in the yard. We had coffee and tea outside several times and played some rugby too. Peter himself gives lots of suggestions and helpful hints, listen to him! We had several fires in the wood stove and following his step by step directions made it very easy and rewarding. We also climbed Caher in the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks in an attempt to summit Carrauntoohil. We followed his suggested route, and I think it was a better experience because of it. Weather kept us off Carrauntoohil, but the hike and summiting of Cahor was just as good. And if you look close, you can see the trail from the house which is pretty cool. We also used the map he provided in the blue folder. The maps also match all his suggestions that he sends in a packet of information. I can’t say enough about the pleasure and good memories we all got from staying here. On our drive out, we rescued a sheep that had fallen through the cattle guard...it was a perfect end to a perfect stay. We’re lucky to have been there and highly recommend it...let’s just not tell too many people so we can preserve the magic of the place!
Located right on the Kerry Way and two miles from the Ring of Kerry, Barralach is a hill-walker’s paradise. Our own 10 acres and the thousands of surrounding acres of open hillsides provide pasture for flocks of mountain sheep and lambs. We are close to the mid-point between the great golf courses of Killarney, Tralee, Waterville and Ballybunion and are only 10 minutes from Dooks 18-hole links course. We overlook the salmon and trout lakes and rivers of the Caragh system. The great Atlantic surfing strand of Rossbeigh and the quieter beaches of Dooks are close by. The fine restaurants and pubs of Killorglin and Glenbeigh, on the Ring of Kerry, are easily reached. Our brochure will guide you to the best eateries, and to superb and memorable activities such as horse riding on Rossbeigh strand or in Killarney National Park, visits to the Skellig and Blasket Islands, outings with the Dingle dolphin or magnificent walks on the Kerry Way, and drives on the Wild Atlantic Way. Skellig Michael is not only a Unesco Heritage site but now also a hideaway of Luke Skywalker of Star Wars, and is easily visited from our cottages.
