If you want to get away from everything......except a cottage on a beautiful beach in the Bahamas, then consider a week at the Reef House.
The Reef House is an oceanfront cottage located in a secluded neighborhood at Bahama Palm Shores, Abaco, Bahamas. The cottage is aptly named because it is in swimming distance of a series of reefs that calm the ocean before the waves hit the beach, making it perfect for swimming, snorkeling, fishing, or just viewing the tropical colors. The spacious cottage is fully equipped; has a great room with cathedral ceilings, a complete kitchen, dining, and living area that opens to a screened porch overlooking the ocean. There are two queen bedrooms with adjoining baths downstairs, and two large loft bedrooms with 2 twin beds in each, that are easily accessible by stairs.
The cottage is 19 miles south of Marsh Harbour airport, so you will need to rent a car (about $350/week).
Abaco Island is less than 200 miles east of Florida, and Marsh Harbour has an international airport served by American and Continental airlines, as well as numerous Floridian and Bahamian airlines. Bahama Palm Shores is in a secluded neighborhood located about 19 miles south of Marsh Harbour. The REEF HOUSE is right on an eight mile stretch of beach, and we will provide a map and easy directions to get there. By far, the best way to get to the cottage is to rent a car at the airport (about $350/week). You then have the pleasure of your own private beach cottage, yet have the ability to explore and enjoy the entire island of Abaco.

My husband and I, along with our 2 children and my mom stayed at the Reef House for 1 week. It was an amazing vacation! The house was well stocked with all the comforts of home. The house is so spacious and there was more than enough room. The setting was gorgeous, with a beautiful beach just steps away. The screened porch was awesome....we had our morning coffee there, took naps in the hammock, read, and enjoyed listening to the waves crash on the beach. The kids enjoyed the kayak and inflatable raft, and we were able to snorkel right out back. Lots of activities were available to us right at the house.
A rental car is a must, since the beach house is very secluded. There is plenty to see and do on the island. We went to Elbow Cay, Marsh Harbour, Treasure Cay beach, Casuarina Point, Pete's Pub. Food at Pete's Pub was out of this world! There is so much to explore on Abaco, and unfortunately, we ran out of time.
Bill was so accomodating. He would always reply right away, to any questions we had for him.
Many thanks to Bill and Helen, for sharing your wonderful home!
Reefhouse belongs to my parents who are so kind to let us come play there each year. We have been coming to Abaco since 1983 and so have seen and done it all. The great thing about Reefhouse is that each year we find a new adventure of some sort. Having the car allows for all kinds of fun on Great Abaco as well as access to the outer cays. Reefhouse provides a fantastic and comfortable home base. This year we discovered some really nice big reef within swimming distance from the beach! We marked them with buoys so that guests can see them too. For either Abaco newbies or especially for veterans, Reefhouse will not disappoint.
stayed at the reef house for 2 weeks. Bill the owner is very helpful, and we found the house just as described. clean, well furnished and with the most beautiful beach right out side. waking up to the ocean waves every morning with out any other noise (traffic or other travelers) is priceless. the only downside, if you want to call it that, is that it is about 30min drive from town. we explored the reef which is south of the house it was awesome and undisturbed. we saw everything there turtles, barracudas, and too many fish to mention. Bill does not have a formal renters agreement but he will send you plenty of information once you have agreed with him on the rental. we would definitely stay there again.
This summer will be our fourth year to Abaco and the third one staying at The Reef House. I cannot say enough great things about this place. It has everything you need and then some! The views are spectacular. My husband loves snorkeling the reef that is right in front of the house. We love listening to the sounds of the waves crashing as we go to bed at night. The upper sun deck is wonderful, especially at night with the telescope (which is included in the house). The owners are great and very friendly. We absolutely love Abaco and love The Reef House. It's a tradition for us each year to stay there now. So relaxing, it's hard to leave.
We had an all-around Amazing Experience at the Reef House! The house itself was beautiful, and quite a bit more spacious than I'd anticipated. We had 8 adults stay for the week, and there was plenty of room for all. Our favorite was the screened-in porch with a view of the ocean. Lounging and laughing with our morning coffee and ocean waves in the background was absolutely unbeatable. The house was well-supplied with condiments and all needed kitchen supplies which was super convenient. Additionally, I would say the one factor that made this house choice exponentially valuable for me was the helpfulness of Bill, the owner. He provided detailed directions to the house and various restaurants, help with activity recommendations, and more; there was no question, big or small, that Bill couldn't help us with. He always emailed me back quite promptly--and the peace of mind that comes with that, you can probably guess, is priceless. We knew that if something were to go wrong (and when you travel internationally, that does tend to happen at times), Bill would make sure we would be well taken care of right away. Everything in the house was found as expected; while the house was awesome, its top feature was the pristine white-sand beach within a few steps from the house; it was so nice for a group of our size to be able to be on our own schedule and not have to pack up all at once and drive to the beach and return at the same time. The other great feature was the moon deck. We sat out at midnight and just gazed at the myriad of stars for hours. Great house, great owner. I very much recommend it!
My sister and I stayed at the Reef House in November 2012 with the aim of doing absolutely nothing for a week. I found the Reef House by typing “I want to get away from everything” into Google, and it delivered on that promise! The house is located on an 8 ½ mile stretch of white sand so soft it was like walking in powder. It might as well have been a private beach, because we saw 4 people on the beach the entire week. The house is beautiful, and would work especially well for two couples or two families with children. There are two bedrooms downstairs with a loft above each bedroom. The screened porch is the perfect place to enjoy meals or laze in the hammock. The stars from the sundeck are simply amazing - we downloaded a celestial identification app and enjoyed identifying the various constellations. Mornings were spent wandering the beach and finding coconuts with which to make rum cocktails. We tended to wake up early because the bedrooms face east and have no curtains, so you get up when the sun comes up.
The only negative is the distance from Marsh Harbour – it is 30 minutes to get to the grocery store or liquor store, and don’t cut it close if you want to catch a ferry. They always leave on time! If you are missing an ingredient for a meal, expect at least a one hour drive. However, the drive was well worth the privacy. The dishwasher broke while we were there, but it was addressed immediately by the caretaker. The internet went down too, but the local company called to make sure it came back up - the nice lady even gave us her personal cell phone number in case it went down again. While there, we visited Guana Cay, Treasure Cay and Hopetown. We went to Mangoes, Snappas, Capn Jacks, Coco Beach Bar and Grill, Nipper’s and Pete’s Pub. The hands- down winner for best rum punch was the Ting-V at Coco Beach in Treasure Cay. Best food (and especially best conch fingers) was Pete’s Pub. It was an interesting time to be in the Abacos because no one (and I mean NO ONE) was there. The sailors had fled from Hurricane Sandy the week before, and the bars and marinas were empty.
If you are looking for complete seclusion and privacy, or if you want the benefits of a private beach without paying for one, then this is the place. If you are looking for nightlife, clubs and crowds, this is not the place. I have already recommended the Reef House to all of my friends, and would definitely return.
The Reef House is in a secluded residential neighborhood
composed mostly of second home owners. It is on a beautiful
8 mile stretch of beach with good swimming, snorkeling, and
fishing. Most of the shopping, restaurants, and stores are
in Marsh Harbour, therefore is is usually advisable to rent
a car, which costs about $350 a week. Abaco Island has a wide
variety of sights, from isolated fishig villages to fancy resorts; blue holes, wold horses, out islands, and so on.
Other Activities: the cottage is near excellent bonefishing, deep sea fishing, and reef fishing
