Why Rodger Moon chose Tennessee

Hi, thanks for looking! I bought and lived in this home for 7 years and completely remodeled and updated the home while living there. I moved to Oak Ridge to shorten my commute to work and decided to keep this home as a vacation rental.

Enjoyable stay

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay. There were a few thibgs that were not working that would have made the stay more enjoyable but we made do. The location is great and we loved fishing off the dock. The kayak and canoe were great fun. The boat ramp was very covenient. The slope to the lake was easy to walk.

The neighbors were friendly.

Some of the things wrong with the house were merely inconvenient and did not keep us from enjoying ourselves. The dishwasher did not clean the dishes so we handwashed. The icemaker didn't work, so, we bought ice at store. The stairs were very steep and noisy but tolerable. We cooked all of our meals and found that the oven required more time than usually needed and one of the stove eyes didn't work on high. The dock did not have power and the hot tub wasn't filled which we told Mr. Moon about. He called me back immediately and answered my questions. Still, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would probably stay again. Thank you, Mr. Moon.

perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 7 nights and had an excellent vacation stay. The house was very comfortable and certainly roomy enough. We enjoyed the fire pit and yard on the lake, and the hot tub was perfect after our long tourist days (we made several long day trips). A major plus that it is dog friendly, yet still clean, unlike many pet friendly hotels. I would definitely recommend the Driftwood Cottage and would stay there again if ever in the area.

Great location on lake

  • 4 of 5

The house was a perfect size for the family of 6 adults plus 2 children under 4 years old. The location for boating and enjoying the lake was perfect. Sand bar, diving cliffs and water front restaurants very close. House kitchen, dining, bedrooms and family room clean. Dock was great for our boat. Did not get excellent rating because screened in porch area bas not been cleaned for a while and was very dirty (we cleaned it ourselves to use on a couple of rainy days) and the dock and outside lights had no power. When it got dark, needed flashlights and lanterns to move around outdoors.

Average Rental with a Nice Lake Location

  • 3 of 5

We had a fun long weekend at Driftwood Cottage after booking short notice due to the weather forecast (we had planned to camp). Rodger (the owner) replied to my inquiry and got us set up in just a couple days—very easy to work with! The best part about this getaway is the lakefront lawn and private dock. It is situated in a little cove with other houses and docks all around, so we weren’t secluded at all, but we didn’t mind that because we typically camp. The provided canoe and kayak were fun. The canoe had a broken seat, but that has probably been fixed now. There is ramp right beside the house, and a covered boat slip on the private dock that worked perfectly for our bass boat. The house was plenty large, but there were a few awkward layout issues. It says three stories in the description, but it is not clear how the living space is laid out, and I didn’t think to ask. The main floor is street level on one side, but the parking area is actually in the back at the walkout basement. This means everything has to be unloaded and hauled up a flight of steps to the kitchen/dining room. It is an additional flight of steps to the upstairs bedrooms. It made going in and out a bit of a chore for the older folks with joint problems, and it was not ideal for toddlers or dogs (bring baby gates!). It would be nice if there was parking or at least a driveway or walkway in the front. The kitchen was nice, and well-stocked, but we struggled to find an area where we could all gather to eat—the dining room plus kitchen island will seat 10, but there is no room for serving if both of those are completely covered up. I’m not sure where you would put 15 people if you were at max capacity! The hot tub had no water in it, and we stayed in October, so that was odd. It was pretty warm while we were there, but if it had been cold, we would have requested the owner address this since it says the hot tub is available in that month. Overall we found this place to be average when it comes to a vacation rental. The lake access really made up for some of the shortcomings of the house, but I would still not suggest it for a group with seniors (60+ or anyone with knee issues), toddlers, or inside dogs that can’t handle wood stairs. It would be better for a group of young adults or families with older kids/teens who will be spending most of their time outside.

Owner's Response: I really appreciate any and all feedback about Driftwood Cottage as it helps me ensure that each guest's stay is as enjoyable as possible. I thinks these reviews are great for future guests to help evaluate whether or not the property is a good fit for their group. This group stayed over 10 months prior to submitting this review and they did not advise me about any issues they had or that they had small children and seniors in their group. I do agree that people should bring baby gates if they have small children. This is only the 2nd time since 2007 that this has came up so I don't feel at this time that it would be warranted to provide baby gates. To accommodate seniors, I let people know that they can pull up to the front door and there are only 3 steps leading to the main floor. It has the kitchen and dining area, a full bathroom, and 2 bedrooms which seems to work well for these groups. I did repair the canoe seat last winter (someone let me know it was broken!). The hot tub had a water leak so it was not in service for about 3 weeks. The leak was repaired late October and it has been working fine since then. I would have greatly appreciated an opportunity to address their issues during their stay and perhaps this would have made their stay much more enjoyable.

Perfect for a large group!

  • 4 of 5

This home worked out very well for our large family (2 parents, 3 grown kids plus 3 spouses, and one baby) who were in the area for a memorial service. It was nice to have two bedrooms on the second floor, which allowed the baby to sleep while others played games in the basement. We didn't have nice weather, so didn't get to enjoy the lakefront, though it would have been lovely to sit out on the dock in warmer weather. All in all, this home met our expectations and worked out very well. Rodger's communication before our stay was very prompt and helpful.

Shabby, run-down property on muddy pond!

  • 1 of 5

All prior reviews must be completely FRADULENT! This property is in a horrible neighborhood and is no way private! We walked in and were hit with an overwelming smell of mildew and mold! Our Verizon Wireless did not connect, and the wi-fi internet was slow and extremely limited! The hot tub was 71 degrees and it was promised to be 95 (we own a hot tub... it takes one hour per degree to heat!) The "LAKE" was muddy and smelly and one could TOSS a rock to the other side. There was no land-line phone even though the listing claimed to have this feature and we felt completely cut off from the world with no way to handle an EMERCENCY....we tried to text/email property owner but it wouldn't go through! Having rented many properties over the years, this is by far the worst misrepresentation we have ever come across. We decided that it was so bad that we had to leave immediately and texted/emailed our complaints to the owner. He never responded to any of his fradulent ammenities and would NOT refund our money. DON'T STAY HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO WASTE YOUR MONEY! It is not a VACATION rental, It is a NIGHTMARE!

Owner's Response: I would have really appreciated an opportunity to correct any issues this group may have had. I responded to their text message within 30 minutes and explained that emergency calls could be made from either the home phone or their cell phones. I also reminded this group that my hot tub would take about 4 hours to heat and that they should set the desired temperature when they arrived. I had explained this to them when they made the reservation. They responded by saying they had already vacated the property. They were at the property less than 2 hours and these were the only two issues that were stated on the day of their check in. I did refund their deposit but did not refund the rent portion as I do not feel these two issues in any way would justify a refund. I have never had any previous complaints about the phone or the hot tub. My policies are no different than any other vacation home I have stayed at and are in line with the recommendations from Homeaway.com. I have been renting out this home as a vacation rental since 2007 and take a lot of pride and care in ensuring each guest has a positive experience at Driftwood Cottage. I get the most feedback about the cleanliness of the home, the peaceful setting, the covered dock, and my neighbors who are very nice.
