Situated on 7 scenic acres, with over 300 feet of oceanfront, the 180 degree view of the ocean and the islands from almost every room in this house is breathtaking.
Located just off the Lighthouse Route, Old Salt is the perfect location to allow you to explore the very scenic South Shore. Besides the stunning natural beauty of this area there are many exciting activities to experience and savour. The area is known for its hiking trails, kayaking adventures, wildlife both in the ocean and on land, golf courses, numerous beaches, restaurants and local craft shops featuring Nova Scotia artists.
Bayswater Beach, voted one of the best beaches in Nova Scotia, is minutes away. Peggy's Cove and Chester are less than 30 minutes from the front door. Lunenburg, an UNESCO world heritage site, and Halifax are just under an hour away.
Everything you need to enjoy a quiet vacation or an extensive tour of the South Shore can be found at Old Salt.
We enjoyed our time at Old Salt tremendously. We were impressed by the view and the privacy at Old Salt
Fall get away for my wife & myself and our 2 dogs. The property was just what we needed to get away from it all. Secluded and peaceful. The water is a short walk down the hill away and the rocky beach is beautiful. Would go back again if we ever head to Nova Scotia in the future. Took day trips to Peggy's Cove, Lunenberg, Mahone Bay and Halifax..all had lots to offer on many different scales. We cooked fresh lobster from Ryer's (Peggy's Cove Rd.)and would highly recommend them as well as White Sails Bakery nearby. The owners were quite helpful beforehand providing information about areas.
We spent 4 nights at Old Salt. It was a clean, comfortable place with plenty of space for the 3 adults in my party to relax and enjoy the terrifc view. Being in such a remote location, I was worried about internet connectivity. However, service was good and I could both enjoy my vacation while taking care of a litle bussines. Using the cottage as our base of operations, we were able to visit Mahone Bay, Peggy's Cove, Lunnenburg, shops and museums in the immediate area. I would reccomend it to anyone.
This is not my first visit to this wonderful cottage and it will not be my last. This historic home sits on a large overlook with a fabulous view of Little Tancook island, Mahone Bay and the ocean. It is very clean and has all of the modern conveniences including internet, washer & dryer, and a large full kitchen and pantry stocked with all the essentials you need to get you through until you go shopping. The beds are comfortable and the decor makes you feel like you are visiting a good friend and includes hand hooked rugs on the floors. Very private with plenty of indoor and outdoor space. We enjoyed being entertained by wildlife in the yard that included deer, rabbits, porcupine, ravens, hawks and gulls. There are no large towns nearby so at night we enjoyed the deck viewing the amazing Milky Way and stars. The Northern Lights were seen 2 nights before we arrived. We took day trips to Mahone Bay, Peggy's Cove lighthouse, the Chester Farmer's Market and Lunenberg. Of special interest to us is the nearby Hooked Rug Museum of North America with it's marketplace and colorful art. If you enjoy art or history that is a great place to visit. Old Salt is charming and feels so comfortable. It is a place to leave the world behind and renew yourself. Thank you again Jo-Ann!
Going to Old Salt was like going home. This old and beautiful blue house sits on top of a hill with a panoramic view of the ocean and Tancook Island. There's one other home in view, but the property is secluded and quiet and a little bit of Nova Scotia heaven.
Although the house is charmingly old -- think narrow staircase and hallway and a few creaky floors -- it is outfitted with all the modern conveniences -- washer & dryer, dishwasher, gas grill, tv, internet -- everything to make your vacation easy. The house was immaculate when we arrived, with bouquets of flowers in the kitchen and dining room. There was even a fire laid in the fire pit outside, because, of course, the nights at Old Salt are as spectacular as the days with the Milky Way swirling above your head.
Joanne and Robert provided us with detailed information about the area, including where to eat, shop and sight see. We loved the Hubbards Farmer Market, Mahone Bay, Lunenberg, and Peggys Cove. We bought fresh seafood at Shatford's Lobster Pound and had great seafood chowder at Doris's Diner. Halifax was just a short drive away, and we loved the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Maritime Museum, and the Farmers Market.
We had a wonderful stay at Old Salt, and without a doubt, we'll be going back.
Old Salt was just perfect for our retreat. The view is breathtaking! If you like peace, quiet, comfort you will love this spot.
Old Salt is secluded will all you need on site. Restaurants are a short 5 to 10 minutes away if you don't feel like cooking.
I will return!
“Old Salt” location on a hill, in the middle of a field, overlooking the water and islands in the distance, was perfect for our family’s vacation. A short walk down to the water revealed a small sandy beach at low tide. We had hours of fun in the warm 70 degree late August water.
The house was well equipped with all the necessary things required for a family of seven plus two dogs to enjoy a week’s vacation. The well stocked pantry left only the essentials to be gotten at the Save Easy in Chester or Hubbard’s. The internet, dish TV and cell phone reception all worked very well for those who wanted or needed to be connected.
Having grown up on the South Shore, Old Salt made a great location to visit family and friends from or to entertain a large family gathering. Blandford is only a “day trip” to most anywhere in southern Nova Scotia.
Jo-Anne could not have been more accommodating or helpful. She was on top of everything from explaining winter storm repairs and why the outside shingles weren’t paint, to having a honey bee hive removed one week before our visit because of concerns with our 2 yr granddaughter.
We would highly recommend “Old Salt” to family, friends or anyone interested in a “Down East” vacation. We were blessed with great weather, but for another time I would loved to ride out a “Nor Easter” in her strong embrace.
