Huge Disappointment and Far from Elegant !

  • 2 of 5

We are very experienced travellers and have stayed in many villas across Europe on prior trips. We were looking forward to our 5 night stay at Villa Giancarlo as a respite in the middle of an otherwise hectic travel schedule. It was important that we have a place to do laundry and make breakfasts. Our poor experience started when Giancarlo met us at the villa. He seemed very rushed and wanting to get us into the place quickly telling us we were arriving very "late" (we arrived at 7 pm and had communicated this to Giancarlo earlier in the day, and were well within the posted arrival time of 4pm-8pm. He advised us not to park in the parking lot down the street since there was a parking spot available right in front of the steps to the villa. When we asked if we would get a parking ticket if we left the car there overnight he told us not to worry about it as long as we moved the car before 9:30 in the morning. Imagine our surprise when we went out to move the car and found a parking ticket on the windshield!

Our next set of frustrations were as follows:

- no written information about how to operate anything - not even the internet password (we had to call Giancarlo and he texted it to us);

- a washing machine that did not work properly - there was a flimsy handwritten paper translating the words on the machine but no actual instructions on how to operate. Giancarlo's solution to this was to send over his "housekeeper" the next day, who speaks no English and could not get the machine to work any more than we could;

- a stove that does not work - we tried to make coffee/breakfast in the morning and while we were able to turn on one element for a few minutes it quickly stopped heating. The housekeeper also could not get it to work. When she saw our half cooked eggs, her solution was to put a lid over them and gesture that maybe they will keep cooking! We just gave up on making coffee/breakfast every day.

- we had to ask for soap for the dishwasher, paper towels, and toilet paper which the housekeeper brought us;

- basic kitchen supplies such as salt and pepper were not provided - the many villas we have stayed in have all included basic staples and often even a welcome basket of goodies - no such elegant touches here;

- the floors were not clean.

We never saw Giancarlo again - on our departure the housekeeper was sent over to return our damage deposit - this was at 11 am and she told us that Giancarlo was "still sleeping".

Owner's Response: Hi! I am sorry to hear that your experience was different from the 5-star experience that other guests enjoyed at Villa Giancarlo. My biggest regret is that we never exchanged a single email, before, during or after the holiday. I am only made aware of the difficulties you experience by way of this review. I thank you for this opportunity to share some advice with prospective guest, to improve their experience. First and foremost, future tenants please do know that when you book a property with Summer In Italy all you have to do to sort out an issue is to let us know: email, phone, Facebook, Whatsapp -- we are here for you. In Italy we speak, well, Italian, and the finest holiday homes might be owned by someone who does not speak much English (or Spanish, German, French, Chinese....). Our multilingual staff is here to help. We take care of your requests, follow up, even translate over the phone. Please do use us! If we don't know you have a problem, we can't help. Appliances in Italy work, but they do work differently than in the US. I am glad to hear that Giancarlo sent someone to help you get them working. If you expected them to work like in the US, I am sure you have been disappointed. To any future guest who might need a manual to operate one of the appliances: please email our staff the model (or just send us a picture), and we'll send you back the PDF file in your language, which is provided by nearly all manufacturers through their website. Self-catering holiday homes are "self-catering" because guest buy themselves what they need when they consume what they find upon arrival. Kudos to Giancarlo for doing the shopping for you :-) You asked, he provided -- why would you consider this a negative? Regarding the parking ticket: sorry to hear that. Giancarlo tried to save you for paying one day of parking needlessly, but the car had to be moved in the morning, as you mentioned. I am sure Giancarlo has learnt how he can get negative feedback for trying to be helpful. I suspect future guests will be directed straight to pay-parking. Cleaning: I understand how what is clean for a person might be dirty for another. In the rare occasions when a guest is not satisfied with the condition of the house (and makes us aware), we ask the owner to provide an additional round of cleaning straight away. Our owners share our philosophy, no questions. As for Giancarlo being hurried in the evening and sleeping in the morning: he was working the night shift :-)

Villa Giancarlo is beautiful inside as well as the terrace

  • 5 of 5

Villa Giancarlo is beautiful inside as well as the terrace. We spend almost all our time on the terrace.

It’s a great location, if you prefer not to be in the middle of the touristy part of Positano. It's a quieter neighborhood with nice restaurants, a nearby grocery store, wine shops. We like it better on this side of town. We also like the Fornillo Beach on this side of town much better than the Spiaggia Grande beach (you need to be able to handle lots of stairs to get to the beach -- my wife's arthritis was making it difficult for her).

Beautiful views and very good villa layout

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful views and very good villa layout - bedrooms are on opposite sides so there is some privacy when traveling with friends / relatives. Nice furnishings and art work. Kitchen is a little dated but we didn't spend much time in kitchen. Nice to have dishwasher and washing machine. We would stay here again -- very nice property and owner.

Giancarlo, the owner, is very nice.

It was very easy to work with staff, very responsive. Thank you Summer In Italy and Giancarlo.
