About Djuna Perkins
I am a lawyer living near Boston with my husband and three children, but I grew up in Woodstock, New York.
Djuna Perkins purchased this Cabin in 2007
Why Djuna Perkins chose Sherwood Forest
Living and working in the city, I missed the country and thought the best way to teach my kids to care for the earth was to make sure they had a place where they could actually see and appreciate the natural world, and where we could all get away from the madness of the electronic world.
What makes this Cabin unique
This cabin is an incredibly restful place. From the breeze on the screened porch to the unbelievable stars and the air at night, to the simplicity of its furnishings, it is just the place to get away from it all and remember who you are.

Truth In Advertising
We stayed at the end of June and were delighted to find the cabin as advertised; clean, neat and with every convenience but, thankfully, with no Internet. Enjoyed the canoe and the many cultural offerings nearby. The owners put a great deal of thought into their home, and it shows. Reasonably priced in a funky, eclectic development. Would definitely stay again.
return to comfort
We have stayed at this property four times. It is quiet, clean, and equipped kitchen. The new washer dryer is great!! The owner is very responsive. Highly recommended.
The kitchen faucet did not work well. Water only was dispensed as a very light flow, probably due to the high mineral content of the water. The front door does not have a handle to open it from the inside and the door sticks and is impossible to open. The back door also sticks, but does have a handle, but a great deal of force is needed to open it. These doors are unsafe. The dehumifier/ air conditioner make a lot of noise and take time to be effective. The house smells damp.
I called the owner and left a message, but no one ever come to fix the issues. I would not recommend this cottage until all the issues have been resolved.
June and July (when Burton M stayed) were extremely damp months in our area, causing the doors to stick even more than typical for our humid summer temperatures. We do sand the doors to alleviate the sticking, but conditions change quickly, making it difficult to anticipate without permanently damaging the doors (for example, as I write this in August, the doors are not sticking at all). However, we have added a sturdy handle to the inside of the front door. The kitchen faucet, which was brand new, was defective and we have replaced it. The air conditioner (a portable) is imperfect, but it is the only type feasible, as even the smallest window units do not fit the windows of the house and air conditioning is only necessary a week or two out of the year in the worst heat to take the edge off. I did receive a message from Burton M that they could not find the key to open the back door from inside. I sent a message saying the door does not require a key to open it from the inside, and received a confirming reply back. I did not hear from him again. I am sorry they did not have a good experience, but wish I had known sooner the full extent of their concerns.
Perfect for a weekend trip in the summer looking to relax in nature
My family and I enjoyed our time at Excalibur. It’s located in a rural setting so may not be the best for everyone, but we really enjoyed the location with a short walk to the beach and the tranquil setting it provided. The cabin itself is super cute, with a lovely porch we sat reading our books at dusk. The only thing I wished was for the cabin to have more information printed out regarding the surrounding areas like restaurant suggestions, hikes, etc. since it was our first time in the area. The area as I said is pretty rural, so you definitely get the nature feel.
So glad Kristen L had a good time! There are many brochures for nearby activities in the bureau in the second bedroom, and the Visitor's Center in nearby Lee has even more information.
First time we stayed at the Berkshires and this place was really cute. It rained the days we stayed we did not care because we have not gone away in so long. We have a granite company in Cranston RI and we can never seem to have any time for anything so this was great. Like to go back again sometime and hopefully the weather will be nicer so we can enjoy the outdoor .
Toilet did not work. Little to no effort made by Djuna to get it fixed.
Before we arrived at the house, Djuna called me to let me know that a tree fell and took out the power lines near the house. We had no power for a few hours. The power company fixed the lines very quickly. The outage was not a big problem.
The big problem with an otherwise great weekend was the house's only toilet, which stopped working a few hours after we arrived and did not work for most of the weekend. Our options for going to the bathroom were to go in the woods, or drive a few miles into Becket or Lee.
I told Djuna about the toilet in a text message as soon as I discovered it. She gave me some advice on what might fix it. I tried turning valves, checking under the cover, and resetting the circuit associated with the water. These did not fix the toilet. On Saturday morning, Djuna asked if it was okay for the housekeeper to come by and check on the toilet. I said yes. The housekeeper never came to the house before we left on Sunday morning.
After we left I told Djuna that I wanted a partial refund. A nonworking toilet is not what was advertised. We exchanged emails for a week. One week after we left, Djuna sent me an email telling me that the housekeeper had visited the house after we left, and the toilet did work. She told me she was not obligated to offer a significant refund. She has not communicated with me since then.
The Berkshires and the town of Becket are wonderful places. My friends and I stay in town every year, and we will not be returning to Djuna's house. We do not recommend doing business with Djuna.
I am sorry that Thomas and his group had difficulty with the toilet. I am not certain why the difficulty occurred, as the toilet was completely functional when the housekeeper cleaned before their arrival and again right after their stay. As Thomas points out, I gave him several suggestions to solve it, and offered to have someone come Saturday morning to investigate. I contacted three different people--a plumber I frequently use, our handyman, and our housekeeper. Unfortunately, none of them was available. When I did not hear back from Thomas, I assumed the situation had resolved itself. I would have been happy to provide some refund as a gesture of good will, but it was not clear from Thomas's emails how much he expected. I try very hard to respond promptly to guest concerns and take great pride in helping people enjoy the Berkshires.
Becket, Massachusetts is in the heart of the Berkshire Mountains, an arts, culture and nature-lover's destination. Rural without being remote, the area has something for everyone, including many summer arts festivals, art classes, museums, dance, theater, antiquing, outlet shopping, horseback riding, hiking, swimming, fishing, rafting, museums, and countless wonderful towns with terrific shops and restaurants to explore.
