About Ole Hammarlund and Karen Lips
We are architect(Ole)/landscape architects(Karen) with an interest in revitalizing the downtown. Ole is from Denmark and Karen is from Ottawa. We came to PEI 35 years ago and loved it here.
Ole Hammarlund and Karen Lips purchased this Condo in 2006
Why Ole Hammarlund and Karen Lips chose Queens Square
The Old YMCA attracted us by its lofty ceilings, grand spaces and the many hardwood floors. We love ballroom dancing and immediately imagined ourselves here. The Y was a much loved building used by almost every Islander some times in their life, but had closed down and sat empty for 2 years before we bought it and started to renovate it.
What makes this Condo unique
We love to cook and entertain, so we offer a welcome meal where we get to tell our guests what PEI has to offer. Our loft is in the western end of the old gym and still has the original hardwood floors. The dining table and kitchen table as well as the stairs are made of the bowling alley that used to be in the basement, which is now the indoor parking garage. There are 18 lofts in all, each one unique and different.

We had a wonderful time at this VRBO. The owner was very welcoming, the meal cooked on the first night was what we needed after 5 days of dining out! The location is only blocks from the waterfront where there are numerous options for dinner and shopping and COWS ice cream! (A must). The check in/check out process was simple and Ole was generous with his time making sure we were settled. The loft condo was exactly was described and perfect for a family of 4 with kids. The rooftop sitting area was wonder to sit at in the evening to enjoy the cool breeze and a nice evening cocktail. We would definitely recommend this location.
Place with character
Reviews were accurate. We enjoyed the very convenient location in downtown. Close to all downtown and wharf activities. Beautiful loft condo with very artistic ambiance. This was a very neat place to stay. Kitchen is well supplied with anything a seasoned cook could want. Guest room is small as described. Bedding for guest room is tired, but adequate for our two pre-teens. The guest room did require a light vacuum. Arrival dinner was a nice touch, convenient, and tasty. Would stay here again.
Our guest bedroom rug is black, which looks great, but also show any speck of dirt. Thus it only takes guests offloading their suitcases for specks to show up. Fortunately a vacuum is available.
We love comments from our guests and will get new fresh bedding for next season. Thanks for letting us know. Ole and Karen
Beautiful downtown loft
Beautiful loft in downtown Charlottetown. It is a short walk to parks, harbor front, restaurants and shops.
Ole and Karen are great hosts. The welcome meal was awesome.
A Totally Unique Experience
We thoroughly enjoyed this very unique property in the heart of Charlottetown, PEI. Restaurants, pubs, theatre and shopping are all within walking distance. The facilities were wonderful with a terrific desk area on the roof of the property. Our hosts, Ole and Karin greeted us with a wonderful home cooked meal on our first night there...now that is unique! Our loft bedroom was large with an adjoining en Suite and a stairway to the roof deck. An elevator would take those with mobility challenges. Our only discomfort was the fact there is no air condition and it was a challenge in the summer heat in spite of the fans. We recommend this lovely property and expect you will enjoy it as much as we did.
We are not fond of AC ourselves and enjoy excellent natural ventilation in our loft. However this summer has been very hot and we will likely have AC next year

Really enjoyed our stay at the loft. Great space, great hospitality. Central to all downtown activities.
Would definitely return.
The loft was exactly as presented. The owners cooked a great meal for all of us the first night and this was the highlight of the trip. We drove around PEI and fell in love with the place and the people. We rented bikes and road the Confederation trail one day. Beautiful..don't hesitate..
We highly recommend this rental.
Although a small City, Charlottetown has special prominence as the birthplace of Canada and home town for the Anne of Green Gables show, a summer feature at the national Confederation Centre of the Arts. As a result there is a lot happening within walking distance: Numerous shows, festivals, live music and lots of good restaurants staffed by graduated of the local Culinary Institute. Most activities can be reached with an easy walk. Explore the picturesque country side and endless beaches in car or on bikes on the rails to trails covering the entire Island.
