Land and Building Architectural Tour: The owners are architect/landscape architect and will be happy to help you evaluate properties or land that you may be considering for purchase.
We are architect(Ole)/landscape architects(Karen) with an interest in revitalizing the downtown. Ole is from Denmark and Karen is from Ottawa. We came to PEI 35 years ago and loved it here.
Ole Hammarlund and Karen Lips purchased this condo in 2006
The Old YMCA attracted us by its lofty ceilings, grand spaces and the many hardwood floors. We love ballroom dancing and immediately imagined ourselves here. The Y was a much loved building used by almost every Islander some times in their life, but had closed down and sat empty for 2 years before we bought it and started to renovate it.
We love to cook and entertain, so we offer a welcome meal where we get to tell our guests what PEI has to offer. Our loft is in the western end of the old gym and still has the original hardwood floors. The dining table and kitchen table as well as the stairs are made of the bowling alley that used to be in the basement, which is now the indoor parking garage. There are 18 lofts in all, each one unique and different.
If you are looking for that modern bohemian experience, this is the place for you. We enjoyed our stay and hosted some dinner parties out on the patio. The place was well equipped for entertaining, good kitchen/dining area layout, big/open space and lots of dishware. We loved the artwork and sat around drinking wine and interpreting it on several evenings. The property does not have in suite laundry, but there were facilities up the stairs and down the hallway. There isn't a tv, but we enjoyed reading and talking instead - what a novel concept. The owners offer you something different here, a recycled building that retained some of its' existing floor and wall finishes while marrying it with modern elements. If you are up for the experience then this is the place for you.

Our experience was a little unusual and this review reflects the integrity of Karen and Ole, the owners of the loft apartment and architects of the modern revamp of the old YMCA building. After having spent 1 night, my 3 friends and I ventured to Brackley Beach and Provencal Park area recommended in the writeup provided by the hosts. It was a beautiful area and had we not gone, would have missed out on one of PEI's jewels. We were contacted by Ole via text message that another apartment in the building had caught fire, such that by the time we returned to Charlottetown, the entire block was sectioned off to traffic and the fire department was putting out the blazes. After much ado, Ole and Karen helped persuade firefighters to let us back into our undamaged apartment to gather our belongings. Homeowners were prohibited to return to the building for 24 hours, so our 3 day stay was cut short by 2. Ole stayed in communication the entire time and promptly arranged a full refund for the remaining 2 nights.
Awesome. Our hosts were outstanding, the accommodations were luxurious, the kitchen especially was great....there's a Sobeys within walking distance, and the airport GA folks were beyond nice. Return? No brainer. Yes.
The space was well represented in photographs. The owners were responsive and helpful. They made a welcome dinner which was awesome and were available for questions throughout our stay. The location is perfect and the loft is wonderfully decorated and appointed. My sister and I especially liked the heated bathroom floors. Would stay again!
Ole greeted us after arriving from our flight in to Charlottetown with a glass of wine and appetizers. A great way to begin our vacation. The home was everything that was described plus more. The location was perfect, the home was completely equipped with everything we needed, and a unique experience we won't forget. A totally enjoyable stay in an extremely beautiful condo! We would not hesitate in returning for our next vacation to PEI.
We spent a wonderful 10 days in this beautiful, spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo!
Our visit started with a delicious dinner prepared for us by the owners, Ole and Karen, over which we had an opportunity to relax after a long car ride and to learn all about Charlottetown and about the apartment itself. I spent much of that first evening (as well of much of the rest of my visit) admiring the beautiful artwork and the architectural features of the building and the apartment itself! A lovely evening to begin our lovely stay!
The beautiful, chef's kitchen was a little wasted on me, as part of my vacation was not cooking too much. However, it would be perfect for chefs and aspiring chefs who want to practice their gourmet cooking, and the place itself is perfect for entertaining. And I did make good use of the professional espresso maker (after Ole gave me a lesson ;-) and had homemade, delicious lattes every morning.
Our hosts left us on our own to relax, unless we had a question or they had an idea that they thought would interest us, and then they were quick to answer and give us whatever help we needed. For example, there is a projector in the condo (no TV, but there is a supply of movies and an HDMI connection, so it's possible to watch movies on the giant screen and stream content if you bring a laptop). When we were being shown how it worked, my husband discovered that there was a problem with it. The next day a replacement appeared at the condo and all was well.
The building itself is really beautiful and there are several outdoor areas to hang out on - a lovely little patio and a rooftop oasis. It is within a 5-10 minute walk of the water, shops, theatres, pubs, etc. I love to walk, and my husband loves to relax and read - so this place was ideal for us!
We would definitely recommend this place for couples or families wanting have a fun, relaxing stay in Charlottetown. Looking forward to when we can visit again!
Although a small City, Charlottetown has special prominence as the birthplace of Canada and home town for the Anne of Green Gables show, a summer feature at the national Confederation Centre of the Arts. As a result there is a lot happening within walking distance: Numerous shows, festivals, live music and lots of good restaurants staffed by graduated of the local Culinary Institute. Most activities can be reached with an easy walk. Explore the picturesque country side and endless beaches in car or on bikes on the rails to trails covering the entire Island.
