About Ole Hammarlund and Karen Lips

We are architect(Ole)/landscape architects(Karen) with an interest in revitalizing the downtown. Ole is from Denmark and Karen is from Ottawa. We came to PEI 35 years ago and loved it here.

Ole Hammarlund and Karen Lips purchased this condo in 2006

Why Ole Hammarlund and Karen Lips chose Charlottetown

The Old YMCA attracted us by its lofty ceilings, grand spaces and the many hardwood floors. We love ballroom dancing and immediately imagined ourselves here. The Y was a much loved building used by almost every Islander some times in their life, but had closed down and sat empty for 2 years before we bought it and started to renovate it.

What makes this condo unique

We love to cook and entertain, so we offer a welcome meal where we get to tell our guests what PEI has to offer. Our loft is in the western end of the old gym and still has the original hardwood floors. The dining table and kitchen table as well as the stairs are made of the bowling alley that used to be in the basement, which is now the indoor parking garage. There are 18 lofts in all, each one unique and different.

Notes:
The Y loft is one of Charlottetown's foremost stylish locations. We can arrange events where you can meet the locals in the area of your interests. We are architects/landscape architects with an aspiring chef son, and are interested in sustainable and historic architecture, good food, cultural events especially music, dance and art and would love to help you connect with the local life. Consider this an opportunity for a really interesting stay in Charlottetown. We will be happy to arrange tours of the Island, and if you are planning to take residence here to comment and advise on the choices. The whY condos that you are staying in are developed by ourselves, and we will be happy to show you other available Lofts. Our weekly rate includes a welcome meal prepared by us on site on the night of your arrival. We can fill you in on what is happening in town. We live right down the street. Our optional services include catering suited to your needs.

Excellent location and apartment

  • 5 of 5

We were very happy with the quality and location of this property. The owners met us on site the evening of our arrival with a lovely meal and provided an overview of everything we needed to know. The apartment is a very large space, although there are only two beds. One bedroom is downstairs in a nice room across

From full bath. The other bed is upstairs in a loft area with second bathroom. Our son slept on the sofa in the very large, open, lovely living room/kitchen area. It was a place full of character and fun to stay there. Also with a fantastic outdoor patio and rooftop terrace. The location was top notch, within easy walking distance of downtown and harbor areas. Would recommend and stay again!!

Beautiful loft in Charlottown!!!

  • 5 of 5

We recently had the pleasure of sharing this beautiful spacious loft with a couple of friends.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted with kindness and a smile. We were then treated to a ''lobster diner'' cooked by the owner's son (a chef).

It's location is perfect for a short or long term stay in Charlottetown. It's only a 10 minute walk to downtown and to the waterfront where you can shop at beautiful boutiques and dine at great restaurants. It is also located neat main roads that will take you out of town towards the beaches and everywhere else.

This loft has no television and we all thought it was great. It gave us all the chance to get back to basics; talk and share after a nice long day of visiting this beautiful Island. It was the perfect place to relax, have a nice glass of vino and listen to good music. Another bonus is that ''chef kitchen'', we had great meals there. Let's not forget the parking space in the garage which is also very practical

We highly recommend a stay at this wonderful loft.

I would give this property a 3.5 - 3.75 rating.

  • 3 of 5

If you are looking for that modern bohemian experience, this is the place for you. We enjoyed our stay and hosted some dinner parties out on the patio. The place was well equipped for entertaining, good kitchen/dining area layout, big/open space and lots of dishware. We loved the artwork and sat around drinking wine and interpreting it on several evenings. The property does not have in suite laundry, but there were facilities up the stairs and down the hallway. There isn't a tv, but we enjoyed reading and talking instead - what a novel concept. The owners offer you something different here, a recycled building that retained some of its' existing floor and wall finishes while marrying it with modern elements. If you are up for the experience then this is the place for you.

summer days in a fun city!

  • 3 of 5

Our experience was a little unusual and this review reflects the integrity of Karen and Ole, the owners of the loft apartment and architects of the modern revamp of the old YMCA building. After having spent 1 night, my 3 friends and I ventured to Brackley Beach and Provencal Park area recommended in the writeup provided by the hosts. It was a beautiful area and had we not gone, would have missed out on one of PEI's jewels. We were contacted by Ole via text message that another apartment in the building had caught fire, such that by the time we returned to Charlottetown, the entire block was sectioned off to traffic and the fire department was putting out the blazes. After much ado, Ole and Karen helped persuade firefighters to let us back into our undamaged apartment to gather our belongings. Homeowners were prohibited to return to the building for 24 hours, so our 3 day stay was cut short by 2. Ole stayed in communication the entire time and promptly arranged a full refund for the remaining 2 nights.

Great location, unique loft

  • 4 of 5

The space was well represented in photographs. The owners were responsive and helpful. They made a welcome dinner which was awesome and were available for questions throughout our stay. The location is perfect and the loft is wonderfully decorated and appointed. My sister and I especially liked the heated bathroom floors. Would stay again!
