Lovely large property close to Acadia, perfect for exploring area

  • 5 of 5

This is a delightful property. We really enjoyed our stay here - 4 adults, 3 kids. It has plenty of character and lots of wonderful old books inside the house. There is plenty of space, with a sitting room, parlor (with fire) and dining area to enjoy. The garden runs down to the water and is very large and perfect for kids to play in. It's also close to Acadia and Bar Harbor if you aim to explore there. Would definitely recommend!

Great Family Vacation Base

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I spend a few days away each summer with our three grown sons. This year we decided on the Bar Harbor area. We confirmed our dates late so most of the rentals in Bar Harbor were already booked. Hancock was as close as we could get and though we were anticipating long drives into Bar Harbor, we found the drive not so bad using the route suggested by the owners and coming back to a quieter and less congested area was very pleasant.

First off, dealing with Cassie and her father, Richard, who owns the cottage was a pleasure. Richard has a business next door so he was within walking distance if we needed anything.

The cottage is older and not as modern as others we've rented but we thought this added to the charm. The well water was not the best so we used bottled water and don't forget your bug spray as the mosquitoes were pretty heavy. We used the deck which overlooks a long lawn (great for Frisbee) that leads to the water. There is a grill provided so we grilled one evening and ended our night with a fire in the fire pit. Firewood was provided.

We loved the fact that there were kayaks and a small boat and life jackets available for our use and the boys took advantage of this each day of our stay.

We found some local places to eat as well and especially loved the seafood at Ruth & Wimpy's.

My family enjoyed this trip to Maine.

Cottage Life

  • 3 of 5

My Husband and I stayed at the cottage for a week. The cottage was just what we thought it would be for an 1800's home. Unique, quaint, and situated in a great spot. Huge lawn, quiet, and the outside of the place is well kept. It is within driving distance to many great attractions.

A few disappointing things with our stay included the water in the house. It smelled like sulfur or a rotten egg. It did not make showering a pleasant experience. A filter system may help with this problem. The other thing that needed to be addressed was the smell of must in the living room. We put it down to the rug and the many old books that lined the bookshelf. Not good for anyone with allergies.

The cottage appeared to be clean enough except in the kitchen. When we arrived there was a sponge and rag on the sink that looked black with grime and the dish rack was filthy. Aside from this, the rest of the place appeared to be clean.

All in all, we used the cottage as a base camp for taking day trips to many attractions, however, we would suggest to the owners to please address the concerns that are stated above. We left a one page write up at the cottage, but to date, we have never hear a response from the owner.

On a different note, we suggest going to see Timber Tina's chainsaw show, it was fun.

Dear Cassie, I have been meaning to write to you for a long time. We had a fabulous time this summer, and I guess you know we are returning next summer for 9 weeks--maybe more if it isn't rented. When I walked in and saw the flowers on the table - I was so pleased. What a cheerful room. Thank you for your part in making our stay such a good one. Hope you have a good winter. We have a few questions about next year and will probably send your dad and John a letter. You never told us we could expect lobsters. What a treat, we ate lobster alot, but the ones we cooked ourselves were indeed the best. Regards, Pam Silar
