Birthday trip to remember

  • 4 of 5

We arranged a trip to Roatan to celebrate a special birthday and enjoy a dolphin experience at St. Anthony's key. This location is absolutely perfect as it's right across from the dolphin lagoon - closer than the pictures show. The dock is great as it is shaded and you can get in the water off the dock and snorkel. We truly appreciated the air conditioning in the bedrooms as it was quite hot in August. If you are looking for a casual, laid back relaxing place to be or if you are adventurous and looking for really neat off the beat things to do, this is the place. And, John the property manager along with Christy, are the perfect people to help you with what you are looking for. They were very accommodating, very helpful...and a lot of fun. They introduced us to Sundowners beach bar in the West end which became a favourite right away. It's about a 5 to 10 minute cab ride which costs about $1.50 (or about 30 limps) per person. At Sundowners a few of us swam out to a boat with a huge rope swing and took a turn. Very neat!

A few other favourites were the Sunken Fish and Guava Grove. The Sunken Fish is a 5 minute walk on the beach. Great food, drinks and view. Guava grove is about a 15 or 20 minute walk but so worth it. The food is fresh and so good and they make a "loaded Ceasar" which is amazing. The owners are very nice and so friendly. We did a tour one day, recommended by John, that was awesome. Shannon our driver was very knowledgeable about the island, very professional and pleasant. We went to see Sloths and monkeys, then on a mangrove tour in a cool local boat which was a highlight and then to a restaurant on the water before returning back to our beach house.

Nothing fancy, very simple, local, nothing touristy, fun, relaxing, laid back, go with the flo, no expectations,....that's what we are like and that's what it was like for us. We were grateful for the opportunity and grateful for John and Christy helping to make our trip so much fun and easygoing. They also helped to arrange a birthday dinner at the beach house with the chef from 'Lilypond" restaurant and then they made a big bonfire on the beach. Truly a trip to remember. Thank you to all who work so hard in keeping the grounds maintained, and for your kindness. Thank you John and Christy for helping to make our trip so memorable and fun.

Note: Unfortunately the sand fleas were terrible and it did have an effect on us so just be very prepared with spray etc.

Great Location! Right on the beach!

  • 5 of 5

As soon as I opened the door and walked in, I loved it! I felt like I was at someone's very loved summer home or camp as we call it in south Louisiana. The view was amazing! The house was very clean, comfortable, and functional. The doors to the balcony could be totally opened up to allow the breezes to flow through. Great wood floors and air condictioning in both bedrooms. My husband and I didn't use the air condictioning in our room because the breeze was sufficient. We had everything we needed for a great stay. John, the property manager was very friendly and made sure we were well taken care of. He even invited us out to West End for supper one night. Johnny kept the grounds around the house perfectly in order. He brought us coconuts, bananna's and different type of mangos than those around the house. Johnny even helped us find a ride into Coxen Hole on a Sunday morning so that we could attend Mass at 7:00 am. The house was located near Anthony Key Resort (a two minute walk). The dolphins (belonging to Anthony Key) were kept very near to the pier which belonged to the home. We watched them being fed, trained and while they were preforming. That was a highlight of the trip! Along the beach were several local restaurants and bars to enjoy. I would recommend this property to anyone wanting to visit Sandy Bay.

Owner's Response: Dear Alice, Thank you for loving our little beach house and for taking the time out to write about your experience. It is especially helpful for me to learn how my staff outpicture the quality of true service, that of going above and beyond of what I ask of them. Lucile

Ultimate Beach Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I had an absolutely marvellous time during our stay at this beautiful well maintained beach house. The huge deck complete with a dining table, deck and lounge chairs is where we spent most of our time, enjoying watching the dolphins, boats meandering by, horse back riders or simply reading a book. Morning coffees and breakfast on the deck overlooking the beautiful aqua ocean was ultimately the best part of the day!! This property is in a quiet location with just enough action to keep it interesting and close enough to town if you want to go shop, to a restaurant or out for the evening . Spectacular snorkelling right off the dock with the extra bonus of watching the dolphins was one of our favourite day time activities!! It has a fully equipped kitchen, a master bedroom with patio doors overlooking the ocean (bonus!!), a huge living room (which we never used as we were always on the deck). The property manager John who has been living in Roatan for many years was absolutely amazing....he was a walking encyclopedia on what to do in Roatan; citing the best restaurants based on what you wanted to eat, which bars to frequent based on who was playing where; which dive company to use, which sites to visit etc etc. His top notch professional customer service definitely played a key role in our amazing stay at the beach house and in Roatan. Thanks John and Lucille (owner)!!! I highly recommend this property for a vacation getaway!!!

Owner's Response: Dear Dianna, Thank you for taking the time to write. You capture the feeling better than I do. I was transported back to Roatan in the reading of your review. This is so reasuring for me to hear about John as he is rather new at the Sanctuary.

Beautiful ocean and sunset views! Best view and value for what you get is well worth it!

  • 5 of 5

This beach front house is a real gem! The large deck and views along with the open concept "beachy" feel to the house made this location very special. The A/C when needed was much appreciated, but you really only need to open the doors and let the natural air through. The manager, Dave along with the owner (Lucille) who just happened to be at the property while we were there, made sure we were well taken care of. We were given a loaded cell phone with everyones number on it in case we ran into any problems. Dave even made sure there was beer in the fridge upon arrival! Our weather was perfect and we spent endless hours just staring or swimming in the ocean and watching the turquoise and green ghecko's entertain us on the deck. Having the ipod player made it just that much more enjoyable. The satelite TV even gave us Toronto channels to see what we were NOT missing.. the snow! The snorkelling off the beach also made this location fabulous. We saw many different fish, starfish, dolphins, barracuda, turtles, rays, etc each time we went out. We were even lucky enough to have been snorkelling when they let the dolphins out across the way and were given a free true dolphin swimming experience I will never forget. The restaurants are within walking distance (had many meals at Blue Bahia, Transquil Seas and Mayoka Lodge) which made this location very convenient. We went into West End a few times (by cab negotiate $3.00 for the both of you!) to do some shopping and ate at Rotissiere Chicken and Keiths BBQ at the right end of the beach for some of the best local food for $5.00! The main attraction also to Roatan night life is the fact that alot of restaurants include live entertainment at night. Our manager, Dave, plays drums in a band, and what a treat to see his different bands playing at different locations over the island. Tranquil Seas Tuesday nights were special. Bring a flashlight its about a 8 minute walk! They usually play from 7-9 which makes it perfect to eat dinner, watch some live entertainment, have a few drinks, then turn in for the evening as the hot sun makes you very tired! We ended up eating breakfast mostly at the house, just cereal, milk and toast. There is a coffee maker, so bring coffee/sugar. The kitchen itself is quaint and was glad we were eating out mostly. The locals lives around this location, and you do hear dogs and roosters alot. The locals also use the beach out front so it is not completely "private". Great time!

Great location but some slight misrepresentations

  • 4 of 5

My fiance and I visited Roatan at the beginning of February with another couple. We stayed for 2 weeks and were very happy with the location and accomodations. The area is quiet and the locals quite friendly, and there are a few little markets nearby for basic supplies. If you don't need to be at the center of the action, you will love this place. We spent days watching the dolphins next door and watching the other tourists watching the dolphins. We also enjoyed watching the local kids playing in the ocean and having a sense of ownership over their island despite the tourist economy. Dave the caretaker was incredibly helpful and always available to answer our questions. We did not rent a car, just took a cab into town every few days for grocery shopping or to dine out. We don't really feel you need a car. We dove with TranquilSeas a 5 minute walk down the beach. They have a great program, but are a little pricey. We felt it was worth it to not have to get to town for diving and no more than 8 people on a boat ever. The restaurant at Tranquilseas is also very cool, definitely worth checking out. If you're not a diver, the snorkeling is fantastic as well.

When we were there, the wifi that was promised was not yet set up which was unfortunate for our friends who had been told it would be available. Also, one of the things we were very excited about was the boat in the pictures. We asked multiple times before arriving if the sail boat was in good working order and were assured it was so. When we arrived, we were told that the boat didn't exist and had not been there for as long as anyone could remember. Also, we were told that we were to give the deposit to the caretaker upon arrival but then the owner charged the deposit to our credit card without notice and we had to follow up after vacation to make sure we got the deposit back. The kitchen equipment is adequate, but we would not characterize it as well appointed. The coffee maker was one of those mini ones that makes 2 mugs at a time. We also asked if there was some kind of a docking station to play music, which there was, but only 1 for the entire property, so other guests didn't have a way to play ipods without us giving ours up.

Wonderful week at The Sandy Bay Beach House

  • 4 of 5

[May 2012] Our family had a wonderful week at The Sandy Bay Beach House. The house is directly on the beach, about 30 feet from the water’s edge. The view from the large deck is outstanding, overlooking the ocean and the large dolphin pens operated by Anthony’s Key Resort for their “Swim With The Dolphins” education program. It’s clear that the dolphins are extremely well cared for, including being taken for “walks” out side the pens.

The house has two generously sized bedrooms, each with it’s own air-conditioner and private bath (showers, no tub). There’s also a fully equipped kitchen, and a very spacious living room with a flat-screen TV and cable. Wi-Fi is available via a USB “key” that plugs into your laptop. There is also a window air-conditioner in the living room, although during the day it’s best to open the French doors and let the sea breeze cool you. The house is a bit rustic, but very clean and comfortable.

For transportation, you should definitely rent a car. We ended up with a 4-passenger pickup, which was very handy for transporting dive gear and luggage. Also, if you can’t drive a car with a clutch you should confirm that your rental car reservation says “automatic.”

For snorkeling, the coral reef starts about 50 yards out and only gets better the further you go. Although shore diving at the house isn’t practical (the deep reef is just a little too far out for that), the Octopus Dive School is a full-service dive operation that’s just a short walk down the beach. Located at the Blue Bahia resort, we found Octopus to be very conscientious and accommodating, and fairly priced. There are excellent dive sites all along the island, just a short boat ride from the shop. They have lockers where you can store your gear.

Several good restaurants are within easy driving distance.
