Belloc House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Montplaisir is a 200 year old stone house which lies secluded in a private forest in the countryside near the medieval town of Mirepoix. You will be renting more than just a house...you will have a genuine rural French experience including a house with authentic French country furniture and an incredible view of the Pyrenees from a mountaintop retreat. This 14 acre property lies about an hour and a half from Toulouse, about an hour from Carcassonne, an hour and a half from the Mediterranean and about 3 and a half hours from Barcelona. The house is close to airports (Toulouse Blagnac and Carcassonne) and train stations (Toulouse Matabiau, Carcassonne and Pamiers.) Lac Montbel, only a few minutes by car, offers swimming, horseback riding, sailing, bicycling and a restaurant in the summer months.

The house was recently remodeled and includes a master bedroom and remodeled bath along with a comfortable guest bedroom upstairs. Both bedrooms have stunning views of the Pyrenées Mountains. An additional guest bedroom with queen bed, en suite bathroom with shower stall and mountain views is located downstairs. All three bedrooms are equipped with top quality mattresses and linens.

Montplaisir features a comfortable salon with fireplace adjacent to a spacious typical French country kitchen and is furnished with country French antique furniture. A front terrace for alfresco dining offers dramatic vistas of the Pyrenées. Dark beamed ceilings and original tile floors lend the house an elegant rustic ambiance.

The house is equipped with a 40' HD LCD TV featuring numerous satellite channels in multiple languages (English, French, German, Spanish, etc.)as well as a DVD library of classic movies and a CD player. The wireless router allows for internet access throughout the house as well as FREE WORLDWIDE PHONE SERVICE. Radiators and a large fireplace will keep the place warm and cozy during cool weather.

This 14 acre privately-owned property sits on a hill overlooking a verdant valley and stunning mountain views. The area abounds with historical landmarks, museums, walking trails and châteaux. This particular site is noted for its unusual varieties of birds.

Access to the area is easy and inexpensive due to the frequent flights into Toulouse Blagnac, an international airport with connections from all over Europe. Carcassone provides inexpensive Ryanair service from Stanstead, Liverpool, Derby and Glasgow.

Montplaisir is located about 15 minutes from Mirepoix, an extraordinary Medieval village dating from the 13th century. Food shops as well as a newly renovated supermarket provide everything you could possibly need. The town has numerous restaurants in all price categories including the 'Cantegril' offering local dishes at reasonable prices. This part of France, the Ariége, is famous for its cuisine, featuring cassoulet, duck and foie gras as well as its wines, including the Minervois and Corbiéres.

On the large central square in Mirepoix you can still admire the half-timbered houses supported on wood pillars, creating a magnificent covered arcade. The ends of the joists of the richest houses are sculpted, and the most beautiful sculptures are on the house of the Justice du Seigneur, which became in 1500 the Maison des Consuls, showing women's faces, bearded heads, a tortoise and other fantastical images.

The cathedral of St. Maurice has an unusual nave. Of the cathedrals of Europe only that of Gerona in Spain has a wider nave. Inside, vandalism and demolitions destroyed many treasures but you can still admire a tabernacle, a Christ on the cross from the 14th century and seven paintings by Larivière-Vesontius.

This charming, peaceful little town is much appreciated for its mild southern climate and easy access from the airports at Carcassonne and Toulouse.

Payments may be made by personal check, credit card, PayPal or bank transfer.

Near Mirepoix you'll also want to visit:

- the ancient Romanesque stone church at Vals.

- the 14th century Château de Lagarde 'Le petit Versailles du Languedoc'.

- Camon, a small fortified village featuring a Benedectine abbey founded by Charlemagne in 778.

- the 'book town' Montolieu where you can find rare and unusual books of all kinds.

- The famous Cité of Carcassonne.

- Toulouse, 'la ville rose', with its numerous restaurants, shops, museums and churches.

- Foix, with its extraordinary castle overlooking the entire region.

- The fortified village of Cordes-sur-Ciel, northeast of Toulouse.

- Albi, with its famous cathedral and Toulouse-Lautrec museum.

- The medieval town of Conque about 2 hours away in the Dordogne.

Why Bruce Johansen chose Ariege

This is a wonderful part of France that remains untouched by the frantic pace of the large cities and Provence. It offers mild weather, great cuisine and delightful wines at bargain prices. We could not find a better vacation spot when we were searching for a retreat from the hectic pace of city life.

What makes this house unique

The rich historical background of this region offers limitless opportunites for exploration. The cathedrals, Cathare ruins, museums and caves keep us occupied during our annual summer stay in Montplaisir. Lac Montbel provides great swimming and boating for our guests and their children. And every year we find something new and exciting.

Beautiful spot with a lovely house!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the stone house in late April after spending two busy weeks in Paris and Prague. It was wonderful to arrive at this lovely, quiet, peaceful house with it's beautiful view! The house is well equipped with everything you could possibly need. There was just the two of us but there is lots of room for 6. We arrived to a kitchen stocked with everything we might need for breakfast - which was really nice.

Using the house as our base we were able to take in all the nearby sites with just a short drive or a 1/2 day walk - castles, vineyards, chateaus, markets, and many lovely little towns. There was lots to do in our 8 day stay, although we did spend a couple of afternoons just sitting in the sun with a glass of wine and enjoying the house and patio.

I would recommend bringing a warm sweater if you are traveling to the house in April as the house could be cool in the mornings and evenings but otherwise the house was perfect. We hope to return for a visit in the future.

Quiet Haven in Southern France with a View to Die For

  • 5 of 5

We loved our visit to France and having your cabin as our home base to return to after exploring this beautiful region. Conveniently located for hiking castle ruins and waterfalls, visiting local markets and the Mediterranean, the breathtaking mountain view made us sad to see the sun go down each day! The home was extremely comfortable, beautifully appointed and every need met. The only suggestion we could give to future visitors is to have a current GPS as there were exciting touring routes we never would have selected with a map in hand. The homeowner was a great communicator and a perfect host as the home was prepped for our arrival and we were gifted items for breakfast the next day! Highly recommend this location if you want a memorable and special vacation.

A beautiful, peaceful home

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful weeks stay in this lovely home. The quiet, the views of the mountains, the visiting donkeys, the endless places to visit and see in the region, the comfort of the home...we wish it could have been two or perhaps three weeks. Maybe next time.

Relaxing, comfortable house

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in this beautiful stone house very tastefully furnished and supplied with all you could need. The stars at night were incredible. One night we came home and there were donkeys down the bank! We loved the house so much we didn't want to leave. Sat out on terrace in the morning and enjoyed the view of the mountains with our coffee. At night had fires in the fireplace. Did enjoy sightseeing recommended by the homeowner during the day and loved that too! Highly recommended for a perfect French vacation.

A superb holiday home and setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic three week stay at Montplaisir. The house is equipped with all you could ask for and the setting is spectacular, with superb views of the Pyrenees. We were there during a heat wave and while it got really hot outside, the stone building ensured inside remained pleasantly cool so the nights were comfortable. The house is a little remote and the driving on the local roads can be interesting but the house is ideally placed for exploring all this beautiful region has to offer. Others have commented on having a glass of wine in the evening and looking out over the mountains which is definitely one of the highlights. We had the added benefit of being adopted by a stray peacock. He was quite a character and spent most nights on the roof but the other wild life in the areas was equally interesting. This is a splendid stone home with all the amenities one could want located in a cleared forest setting with a view of the Pyrenees. The area is quiet with few neighbors and wonderful for walking and relaxing. It affords one the opportunity to make day trips to small and large towns, wineries and markets in the area. Mirepoix, the closest town, has a lovely church, terrific market on Mondays and is historically interesting. My husband and I stayed 6 weeks at Montplasiar and hope to return again to enjoy the serenity and beauty.

The owner and his property managers could not have been more responsive to inquires. One would require a car to stay in this lovely home.
