About John Thomas

For Stacy and I building this cabin was an effort to create a very unique retreat. We found the perfect setting; a five acre estate lot within a gated 200 acre nature Preserve, that boasted a view which even the locals described as the best they had ever seen. We then hired a team to travel to Pennsylvania to dismantle and retrieve the materials from two 150+ year old barns. One actually stood on the battlefield at Gettysburg, but had to be removed to make way for the new visitor's center. The other had been built by Amish pioneers. All of the timbers had been laboriously hand hewed with broad axes. We carefully planned each detail to create the feeling of an old 1800s cabin, while incorporating modern conveniences. Upon his first visit, a technician who came to install the satellite dish and receiver commented 'I'll bet you had a challenge getting this old place up to code'. I replied that it was a new cabin, to which he responded with dismay, 'you built it like this?'. Mission accomplished.

John Thomas purchased this cabin in 2007

Why John Thomas chose Cashiers Area

Around the chic mountain village of Cashiers, North Carolina, (10 minutes from the cabin) fashionable development keeps pace with the growing demand for vacation and retirement homes. Easily understandable considering Cashiers is located in the waterfall area of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where high elevation lakes, streams, and rivers abound. Adding to the natural attractions that beckon the thousands of affluent, seasonal residents (plus a multitude of visitors) are notable golf courses, trendy shops, fine dining establishments, and tennis resorts. Asheville, home of the Biltmore Estate, is a cultural hub not to be missed, less than an hour drive away.

What makes this cabin unique

Do you desire the peace, quite, and solitude of being by yourself, with only the splendor of nature and your loved one(s) in the mountains, but still very close to fine dining, upscale shopping, outdoor activities, and resort amenities? We did, and it was a most difficult combination to find. Sapphire Heaven is the result of our quest to create that rare combination. As a bonus we even have a private waterfall within a short hike.

Best cabin in North Carolina

  • 5 of 5

I have rented cabins near Asheville, NC and Gatlinburg,TN. This cabin was by far the best. Amazing woodwork (wood taken from barn at Gettysburg), fireplace, outside deck, outside tub and kitchen. The private waterfall below is only accesible for anyone renting the cabin. There is also another great waterfall (Rock Creek Falls) on the preserve with a fireplace and chairs a short distance from the cabin. Very secluded and quiet. The view from the porch doesn't get old. Cable TV works, WIFI is excellent for such a remote setting. What can I say, the place is full of character. Also only a short drive away from Gorges State Park. Hike to Rainbow falls. Pictures do not do this place justice. See it in person. The cabin is located a short distance from Cashiers with grocery stores and restaurants. We didn't want to be away from the beautiful cabin too often, so we grilled out on the weber. Plenty of firewood for fires every night, with a little gas if you aren't great at starting fires :) We took our dogs and they had plenty of places to get off the leash on the preserve to enjoy the woods. Thanks for sharing your amazing cabin!. I highly recommend!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review. Fortunately, our one of a kind location is, in my humble opinion, unmatched. Stacy and I drove up from Atlanta to occupy one unreserved night, last Friday. As many times as I've been there the October colors viewed from the back deck were absolutely stunning. We love it there any time of year, but fall is special. God's best handiwork is on brilliant display. Please visit again.

Far exceeds expectations!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I celebrated our first anniversary here and Sapphire Heaven truly is a heaven on earth. The historic reclaimed wood timber construction is accented by fabulous furnishings and appliances that appear old but are modern in function. The location is superb- close enough to Cashiers and Highlands for shopping and dining and yet secluded enough to feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. The owner describes the hike to the privately accessible waterfall as "moderately difficult" and I would agree- it's moderate on the way down and difficult on the way up- but well worth the effort! :) The owner was fabulous to work with and instructions were spot on for access. If you're looking for a mountain cabin getaway you can stop now- this is the place you want. Definitely recommended!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for that review. We try really hard to keep our five star rating, not because we want to have more bookings, but because we want all of our guests to find that place deep within their person that harbors that "this is what life is really about" realization. That's a five star realization.

Should Be Called Relaxation Heaven

  • 5 of 5

If you can't wind down in this environment you're damaged. The views, the privacy, the amenities, and the ambiance are all special. The cabin itself is art you can live in. The attention to detail, the stonework, the timbers and decor create a very special place. Despite being in a rain forest there were no bugs, so the outdoor shower, hot tub, and stove were used daily. You see the sunrise each morning and coffee on the deck is a fabulous start to each day. The cabin is 15-20 minutes from some excellent dining options and the Canyon Kitchen is one of of the best places we've ever eaten. Mica's is good as well as the Orchard. Outdoor activities whether its hiking, biking, or golfing abound. Waterfalls and trails are everywhere. Rainbow Falls is beautiful but you need to be in great shape for the hike. The waterfall accessible from the cabin is reached by a VERY steep trail and is pretty but hauling picnic stuff would be very difficult. Be advised there is no iron or ironing board in the cabin. We'll definitely return to this little piece of Heaven.

Owner's Response: Stacy and I are happy to have shared this incredible place with you. For years we've looked for another location where we could duplicate the cabin experience in order to offer more people a chance to recharge in such a healing environment. Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to find a combination of gated privacy, spectacular view, and easy accessibility to conveniences. We're so thankful we found this place! ...oh, and I just bought an ironing board and an iron (of course fittingly vintage) for the cabin.

Sapphire Heaven is Truely a Gem!!

  • 5 of 5

I wanted to shoot you a quick note to let you know what a fantastic time we had at your beautiful home over Memorial Day weekend. I loved the authentic cabin feel yet with all of the modern comforts of home. The quiet beautiful seclusion of the woods were accented by the fragrant flowers blooming all over the back of the property.....just amazing!!! I am a Michigan girl and grew up in the woods, but your slice of heaven is breathtaking. Thank you for sharing it with us.

We also took in the charm that is Cashiers, and traveled to the Highlands. The drive was fantastic. The weather was perfect….not too hot or cold. On Sunday we spent 8 hours at NOC Outdoor Center where we went White Water Rafting and another 3 hours Mountain Zip Lining. Imagine zipping from mountaintop to mountaintop for a half mile at 55 miles per hour!! Coolest thing I have ever done and I am a pilot!!

This trip was magical and it really solidified my boyfriend and I''s love for one another. So much so, that he proposed to me this weekend! My answer was delivered with the same excitement that I displayed when I jumped off that mountaintop to fly over the valley……”YEssssssssssss”!!!!

Thank you again...we will definitely be back!

"Wow, says it all!!!"

  • 5 of 5

My wife & I just returned from a very relaxing but fun vacation at Sapphire Heaven cabin in Sapphire, NC. Wow is what we continued to say as we pulled up to the cabin, opened the door and explored the inside and then again as we stepped out on to the deck! John and Stacey have done a great job creating an old time feeling cabin with some very nice modern features as well. We enjoyed the cabin, the views, the challenging trail to the falls on the property, just to name a few. It was a great trip and we look forward to returning again in the future so we can continue our quest to see more waterfalls in the local area (Sapphire, Cashiers & Highlands).

Heaven on Earth

  • 5 of 5

John & Stacey,

I can’t begin to express how much we enjoyed our stay at the cabin. The place itself is nothing short of amazing. And the setting couldn't be any better either. It was the perfect place to unwind, decompress, get off the grid and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. We didn’t once turn on the TV, and purposely turned our cell phones off. We were actually hoping to get snowed in on our last night, but alas, it didn’t come and we had to go.

We are already checking the calendar to see when we might return, for a more extended stay next time, for sure. Both of us being novice outdoorsmen, we want to experience both the cabin and it’s natural surroundings (and hiking and waterfalls) during different times of the year for the various seasons.

We’ve traveled across the US, Central America and Europe on many occasions but have never found a place as relaxing and that brought us such mental wellbeing as this.

Looking forward to our next stay.

Sincerely,

Sean Sullivan and Jimmy Clay

Owner's Response: We're so glad your stay was five star! Please come back as your experience should be even better next time. I'm currently at the cabin installing a wood-burning, cast iron fireplace on the patio near the hot tub. I removed the railing on the wooded side, extended the patio 32", and will have our original, local third generation stone mason, Leland Hughey, build a rail-high rock wall around it. It should be a really nice, perfect pairing for the cold months; a hot tub and a fireplace! We also bought a lot in Sapphire Valley so that now, all of our guests can use the amenities of the Sapphire Valley Resort if they so choose.

Private Waterfall!: There is a spectacular waterfall that is about 150 yards from the cabin. The trail to it is steep in places, which makes it a difficult hike, but well worth the effort. The waterfall area is totally private and exclusively accessible from our cabin property. What is even more amazing is the fact that you can easily walk behind the falling water and stay totally dry. Naturally, I've named it Sapphire Heaven Falls. As you stand behind it, the top of the fall starts about 40 feet above your head from a bowl shaped rock outcropping, then falls twenty feet out from you, and ten feet below you to cascade steeply down the mountain. There is so much room under/behind the falls that you can have a picnic for the whole family. The falls are made private by the sheer walls above and below this plateau shelf. Amazing!
