Great flat, mediocre location, challenging host

  • 2 of 5

We booked two days in advance. None of the baby items listed were available unless we booked a certain driver named Tom. He charged £85 from the airport (we paid £29 for the train and missed out on a bed and other items for our two babies). We were also charged £10 to pick up our key off-hours. The cleaning lady and new guests showed up outside our door at 10:18am and knocked, then waited until 10:30am on the dot to knock again and walked in with all their things as we were trying to leave. The bed in one room smelled a bit like pee (the duvet, maybe?) but overall the flat was nice, and spacious. Our first VRBO and probably our last; too challenging.

Owner's Response: A lastminute booking "instant booked" (without asking questions pre booking), 32hrs – just over 1 day in advance & they didn't tell me they needed the baby items until 9hrs before check in. The guests were two back-packers with two babies. Their discount was 50% due to a lastminute cancellation (less than cost price). We have a couple of 5 STAR holiday let apartments of which around 2% of guests require baby items, therefore logic dictates buy the best available (Baby Bjorn brand) & share between two apartments – which has worked perfectly the last 3yrs. It clearly states in the advert we need at least 1 weeks notice to supply the baby items. The guests insisted on a 12 noon check out, which simply isn't possible when an incoming guest is checking in early – which it states on the advert. Tom (independant taxi driver) offered to pick them up from the furthest London airport for £85 – the going rate & much cheaper than grabbing a taxi at the airport. Plus agreed to pick up the baby items for FREE. Look through the 5 STAR reviews – this is the ONLY 2 star review we've ever received over all the websites we advertise on.

Loved this place!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed staying here! John was the perfect host and connected us with an incredibly friendly/knowledgable driver (Tommy), who provides us with rides both to/from the airport... despite our flight times changing numerous times. John was quick to respond from inquiry right through our departure, providing a beautiful spot to stay (very comfortable, great appliances, coffee maker... cool balcony to enjoy the mornings, etc) and a ton of info on how to get around, etc. We will certainly reach back out whenever we're back through London. Thanks again, John!

Clean apartment in a quiet side of town. Had everything we needed and then some. Would definitely stay again. The two bathrooms were great.

Great vacation spot

  • 4 of 5

We like to go to stay in a neighborhood when we visit a new country. We enjoyed walking along the canal. We found a great local restaurant called The Narrows and after spending long days in London we had great meals. There was a neighborhood store next door with friendly owners, fresh croissants and everything we needed for breakfast, and a nice wine and spirits selection. We appreciated the little extras that were provided- great coffee and detergent to wash our clothes. It was a 15 minute walk to the dlr and we went all over on London on the tube. We had a great week in London.

After looking at the photos and reading the reviews we had high hopes for the apartment. However, the reality is that we agree wholeheartedly with the writer of the one "negative" comment. While the apartment was in a quiet location, not far from the station, was very clean and a good size and value for London there were some minuses.

Although the apartment looks spacious in the photos there is far too much furniture and "stuff" and it is all too large for the size of the rooms . The 3 of us are not "clinically overweight" or "determined not to enjoy ourselves" as suggested in the owner's reply to the 3* comment. On the contrary we are all of normal weight and did have a great time. The TV was so huge that the picture was blurred and you could see all the pixels as you could only sit about 2 metres away. And it was difficult to move around the rooms. With 6 people it would be a nightmare. The beds, though comfortable, were so low it was difficult getting in and out of them for us older people. The site quotes items of furniture with costs and origins but we found most of it to be ugly and impractical. There was nowhere we could put our suitcases - we were away for 6 weeks and were travelling with a reasonable amount of luggage - and this was because the furniture took up so much room. And what is the huge mirror in the living area all about? Maybe if less had been spent of the exorbitantly priced and impractial bedside lamp from Harrods in the main bedroom there might have been enough money in the budget to buy a bedside light for the 2nd bedroom!

The biggest annoyance of all was that there was only 1 key for the outside gate. Apparently a previous guest had accidentally taken the other one home and a replacement hadn't been provided. This was most inconvenient as the 3 of us had different plans each day and we somehow had to try and coordinate times of return so that no one was left standing outside in the cold. There were no instructions on how to operate the heating but fortunately it didn't get too cold to need it.
