About the property

2 Bedrooms (queen beds), 2 Bathrooms, and Loft w/ Queen Sleeper Sofa, sleeps 6

Big Bear Cabin at Bear Den Acres has lots of room with roughly 1,350 square feet, two bedrooms (both have queen beds), two bathrooms, loft (queen sleeper sofa), large front porch with Hot Springs hot tub overlooking short and long range mountain views. Big Bear Cabin has a cozy stacked stone gas log fireplace with 150 year old reclaimed wood mantel, antler chandelier over the log dining room table, convenient location, abundant amenities, and more!

The Bear Den Acres community in which our Big Bear Cabin is located consists of roughly 40 sparsely developed heavily wooded acres and is located directly off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in between mile markers 324 and 325. The entire heavily wooded community of Bear Den Acres is now completely protected and encircled by 208 acres of land owned by Foothills Land Conservancy. The lot in which Big Bear Cabin sits consists of 2 1/4 acres of that 40 acres and roughly 75% of our 2 1/4 acre lot directly borders the Foothills Land Conservancy protected land. A large portion of the 208 acres owned by Foothills Land Conservancy directly borders and is encircled by hundreds of additional acres of Pisgah National Forest federally protected National Park Service land with 1.8 miles of that NPS land bordering the Blue Ridge Parkway directly.

To paraphrase... Big Bear Cabin is super secluded and a nature lovers paradise!

Imagine walking out of the cabin on a beautiful mountain morning to over 13 miles of trails, almost 2 miles of streams, and a beautiful 50' waterfall.

Bear Den is an incredibly fun community with a vast number of amenities to enjoy during your stay at Big Bear Cabin. There is a lake with sandy beach area for swimming, fishing (no North Carolina fishing license needed), paddle-boating (for rent), and canoeing (for rent). Bear Den has miles of hiking trails, a waterfall, two fun playgrounds for the little ones, basketball court, horse-shoes, volleyball and badminton, shuffleboard, ping-pong, arcade, and recreation hall which hosts entertainment seasonally. There is also a trading post which carries basic groceries, ice, drinks, firewood, souvenirs, information on local things to do, etc.

Downtown Spruce Pine is beautifully located directly on the North Toe River and is roughly 10 minutes from Big Bear Cabin. There are a variety of restaurants within a short drive of Big Bear Cabin including the award winning Knife & Fork in downtown Spruce Pine. If adventure is what you seek, there are a TON of local activities within 10 minutes of Big Bear Cabin.

Nestled in the heart of the Pisgah National Forest, Big Bear Cabin is located within 5 minutes of the Orchard at Altapass, 10 minutes of the area's best gem mining, 10 minutes of the beautiful Linville Falls / Linville Gorge / Linville Caverns, and 20 minutes of Grandfather Mountain.

Sorry, no pets or smoking are allowed in Big Bear Cabin.

Make sure to check out our webcam and tons of pictures on our cabin website.

About Bear Den Reservation Staff

We built Big Bear Cabin with a lot of love in 2007 and began to share the adventure with renters in 2008. We only live two hours away and try to make it up to our cabin as much as possible when it is not being enjoyed by other people. We love our Big Bear Cabin and are sure that you will quickly fall in love with it as well!

Bear Den Reservation Staff purchased this cabin in 2007

Why Bear Den Reservation Staff chose Bear Den

We picked the Bear Den Acres community to build Big Bear Cabin because of the seclusion, location, the peacefulness, how quiet it is, and the incredible beauty of the mountain views from the lot we selected. I grew up as a little boy camping at Bear Den Campground with my parents and jumped on the opportunity to buy a piece of land in this special place. The Bear Den Acres community is the only community on the East side of the Blue Ridge Parkway between Hwy 226 in Spruce Pine and Hwy 221 in Linville Falls. The Bear Den Acres community is located inside Pisgah National Forest and we absolutely love the seclusion and the tremendous amount of wildlife we see regularly while visiting the cabin. We are roughly one mile past Bear Den Campground but it is fun to drive through to see the campers as well as smell the campfires and breakfast cooking in the morning.

What makes this cabin unique

Big Bear Cabin has the special benefit of being part of the Bear Den Acres community. As part of staying at Big Bear Cabin, you get to enjoy a ton of fun things to do right within the Bear Den community. You can swim in the Bear Den lake or lie on the sandy beach, paddle in a boat or canoe, fish in the lake without needing a NC Fishing License, hike on Bear Den's 18 miles of nature trails leading to streams, a 50' waterfall, and spectacular scenic overlooks. For the sports enthusiast, Bear Den offers areas for basketball, horse shoes, volleyball, badminton, and others. Children can play on one of two great playgrounds or in the arcade game room. The whole family can join together in the recreational building for shuffleboard, ping-pong, square dancing, and much more! There is typically night entertainment in the summer time. You can also head to the Bear Den Trading Post for light groceries, ice, drinks, and souvenirs. It is really a great time!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time at this cabin, great scenery, great hot tub, perfect getaway! The game table was wonderful considering the competitive nature of my family, and we enjoyed watching scary movies in the loft. The hot tub is awesome, it was very relaxing and overlooked beautiful scenery. My only suggestion would be new towels, but everything else was WONDERFUL! Thanks again, be back soon! Dennis, Robert, and Mandy

OWNER COMMENT: Thank you for pointing out the condition of the towels. You were the third folks in the past three weeks to point this out to us. I purchased a new set of towels and washcloths today (Jan 21, 2014).

Check out our webcam and tons of pictures on our website below. Big Bear Cabin offers free Wi-Fi internet access for you to enjoy during your stay. There is a very large front porch on Big Bear Cabin which directly overlooks Humpback Mountain. On clear days, there are also really amazing long range views of Mount Mitchell that can be seen on the left side of the cabin. The front porch is roughly 480 square feet and has a large 4 person Hot Springs brand hot tub (i.e. the best hot tub brand in the world) overlooking the surrounding wilderness as well as the short and long range mountain views. It is a one-of-a-kind experience relaxing in the hot tub on a clear night with the outside porch lights turned off looking up at the millions of stars in the sky. You will think you are in a planetarium.

We absolutely LOVED the cabin and still check the webcam almost daily to see the beautiful mountains. We arrived to a yard full of snow which couldn't have been more perfect for our Florida raised children. Every detail of the cabin was just rustic and gorgeous! Hope to be back in the Fall.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The house (it's unfair to call it a cabin) was the perfect place for our vacation in the mountains! We cooked ribeyes on the grill, relaxed in the hot tub under star-filled skies, were visited by deer, foxes and wild turkeys, and warmed up by the fireplace on the first night or two when it was chilly. The DVD player helped entertain our young child in the evening. The smell of freshly cut wood filled our senses every time we walked in the door. This was one of the best vacations I've ever had in my entire life, and a major reason was the entire package that this cabin offered. We could not have afforded to stay here without your offseason midweek special, so I hope you keep that up next year...we are anxious to return!

We stayed at Bear Den cabins on News Years Eve (I think it was Mountain View #6). It was our first time in this area. It was cold, but the warmth of this place embraces you. This place is wonderful. It felt like home every time we walked in from an outing. The owners have done a real great job of decorating and everything works great. The view is beautiful because the frontside facing the mountain ridge is all glass. I can imagine the Fall leaf color would be amazing. Even though it was very cold, we still took advantage of the hot tub. I'm glad we did. It was incredible because everywhere you looked you could see millions of stars. I found the loft to be a great retreat to read and relax. We also enjoyed hiking Linville Falls and visiting the little towns of Banner Elk and Spruce Pine. We plan to stay in this cabin again soon. Thanks to the owners for sharing this incredible place with the rest of the world.

Big Bear Cabin is located in the Bear Den Acres community directly off of the Blue Ridge Parkway between mile markers 324 and 325 and is roughly half way between Linville Falls and Little Switzerland. Big Bear Cabin is very secluded and sits at an elevation of 3000+ feet above sea level within the Pisgah National Forest. The cabin is conveniently located close to many local attractions and offers short and long range mountain views. Don't feel like getting in the car to go find a hike or waterfall? No problem... It is a short walk from Big Bear Cabin to several really great hiking trails that lead directly to a beautiful 50' waterfall inside the Pisgah National Forest. Big Bear Cabin is located within one of the very few communities (i.e. Bear Den Acres) located directly off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Make sure to check out the mountain views and millions of stars at night from the Hot Springs hot tub on the large front porch.
