Guestbook comments from the owner

You were on spot -- Elias was amazing: fun, thoughtful, and entergetic. He really made the vacation an experience and an adventure! We did many of the typical vacation things: ziplining, and snorkeling, but when I asked everyone to rate their top two experiences, here's what we got (and there are more than 2 answers as not everyone's answers were the same):

Watching the Olive Ridley turtles lay eggs, and learning about the village and its history with the turtles;

Fishing for tuna and reds, and more;

Cheering on the sabernaros as they competed to capture rings off a hanging string;

Driving up to Monte Verde and our fabulous night walk where we saw a two-toed sloth, pit viper, a prorcupine in a tree itching itself, sleeping jays, a hiding tarantula, and so much more;

Riding the rivers with guides and seeing crocodiles, screech owls, bats...;

Visiting the Guaitil Pottery makers and learning about their history and art;

snorkeling.

Just terrific!

Can't wait to go back

  • 5 of 5

Our family trip to Casa Optional was perfection! Our family truly had the trip of a lifetime. Elias, Luis and Esther made the trip so relaxing and enjoyable. The food was amazing and they took special care with food allergies. Every adventure that Elias planned was great. ATVs, Zip Lines, fishing, horseback ridding-all were superb. Spending a relaxing day by the pool with the beautiful views are still vivid in my mind. I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a place to enjoy with your family and friends!

Family Adventure of a Lifetime

  • 5 of 5

Our family went to Costa Rica looking for adventure--and we found it--with a little help from our new friend, Elias! Casa Ostional is a retreat and truly exemplifies Pura Vida--pure living! No matter what you would want to do from adventures like zip lining, ATV, sunsets, beach/surfing--Elias knows the best places to take you and makes sure you are taken care of. The food is amazing and we felt welcome everywhere we went. Casa Ostional is stunning and we couldn't have asked for a better place to spend time as a family. I would recommend this vacation to absolutely anyone and give it the highest rating!

Home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

We traveled as two families but felt as if we had formed a new extended family with Elias being our Papi! He was our host, driver, planner and all around expert on all things Costa Rica! Whether we wanted to go to the beach, go zip lining, ATV riding, horseback riding or just for a walk -- Elias took great care of us all! Like a mother hen taking care of his chickadees, he always made sure we were settled in (umbrellas and chairs set up) before leaving us on our own to explore. He navigated the bumpy dirt roads with care and answered all types of questions! As if this wasn't enough, we would come back to the house for 3 incredible meals a day, prepared and served by an incredible family! Fresh juice of all kinds (pineapple, mango, melon, etc) was served at every meal. Despite the lack of air conditioning, the many fans around the house, cooled us off or a dip in the infinity pool made for a great way to take a break. Sitting on the deck, we saw an incredible array of birds and animals including monkeys, parakeets, iguanas and more! The vista from the deck was beautiful, but if you wanted to watch sunset from the black sand beach, just let Elias know and you would be there in time to enjoy the beautiful vistas! I would highly recommend this home to anyone looking for a more local experience. This is not an all-inclusive setting -- this is a home that makes you want to keep coming back for more!

A Dream

  • 4 of 5

My husband, myself, adult cousin and 3 children recently stayed at Casa Ostional. Our stay consisted of a total of nine days. It is about 3 hours away from Liberia airport. The road conditions require a 4x4 and you need to allow extra time when traveling anywhere within Costa Rica.

We enjoyed Elias from the moment we met him. He is always smiling, happy, patient and full of information and interesting facts about Ostional and Cosa Rica in general. It was a relief to have a driver to navigate the roads and make us feel extra safe wherever we went.

I would say the highlights were, of course, Elias, and also the cook, Luis. We looked forward to tasting every meal as they ALL were amazing! We had so much fun laughing and telling stories to one another....these men truely became real friends during our stay. We also enjoyed meeting Luis' wife, daughter and sister in law. They all made our week a moment in time we will always cherish.

The excursions we enjoyed were the rodeo...Elias was so accommodating and made it a night will will never forget! We loved the horse back ride and zip lining. The sunsets at the beach are breathtaking and lazy days at the pool a taste of heaven. I am also amazed that Luis invited us to spend the evening with him at his church...we were missing ours back home and enjoyed seeing what church is like in this country.

Elias was also kind enough to hire a friend of his to take my cousin fishing at a discounted rate! Luis promptly fried it up for us and it was delicious!

As for the house and location, it is off the beaten path. We felt we got a true taste of Costa Rica and skipped all the tourist traps. All the local people are so friendly and helpful.

The house is beautiful. The area is very dry and dusty and Ester did a good job of washing the floors and keeping things as tidy as possible. A tip to remember, Costa Rica has many lizards, spiders and other creeping things. Elias was very kind, to do his best to keep these insects at bay....but it is impossible to be insect free. The pool and grounds are a dream and I miss sitting on the balcony enjoying the scenery with a cup of coffee.

I could say so much more...but overall it was an amazing adventure!!!! I recommend it to anyone with a love for the outdoors and adventure:-)

Some beach somewhere...from Texas

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed being in a rural, less touristy area so we could truly enjoy the natural beauty of Ostinal Costa Rica. Elias was a terrific guide with a knowledge of many of the hidden jewels in the area...especially to watch the amazing sunsets. The ATV tour far exceeded our expectations--it was truly an adventure!!! ... Not you normal routine group activity. Zip lining was a close second. Hermit crab beach (my name for it) was my favorite place to enjoy the sunset and then once the sun went down...the beach was covered with thousands of hermit crabs (I'm not exaggerating). Marlin Bills and the Tiki Bar were two enjoyable places to grab a drink and enjoy the sea breeze. Our personal chef,Luis, was awesome. 3 meals a day that we're all outstanding!! Loved our vacation and would do it all over again. Only downside...it's hot there and there is no air conditioning in the house...plenty of fans and the evenings cool down so sleeping is nice but during the daytime, you will want to be in the pool or at the beach! Wonderful experience.

Kick back and CHILL!!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to beautiful Costa Rica. On our first visit we rented a 4 wheel drive, stayed in 2 different locations, crammed as many activities as possible into a short period of time including zip-lining, horseback riding, snorkeling, did our own cooking and cleaning, and it was go-go-go the entire time. This time we just wanted to kick back and relax, decompress and be pampered a bit. Casa Ostional gave us all that and much more. From the moment we met Elias and watched in amazement as he managed to comfortably fit 5 adults and all our luggage into his vehicle just as if he was fitting together the pieces of a jig-saw puzzle, we knew we were going to have the perfect adventure. He is truly a Casa Ostional treasure, if not a Costa Rican National treasure, with his grace, humor, patience, knowledge and experience. Thank you Elias for being you, and allowing us to be us, unconditionally. Luis's amazing cooking ensured that any aspirations we had for 'skinny dipping' in the fantastic infinite pool ended with our realization that we were only fit for 'chunky dunking' by the end of our stay. Thank you Luis for those extra pounds!! Ester's sweet smile greeted us every morning, afternoon, and evening, and her gentle soul touched us in ways we didn't anticipate. Thank you Ester for being our Rodeo princess! There wasn't any one single experience that made our stay amazing. It was the sum of all the small parts, from the kind and caring staff, to the breathtaking views, to the wonders of the surrounding area beaches, to the amazingly entertaining dragonfly dances that were choreographed for us each morning as we sat with our coffee. Friendly and quirky canine Ramiro was just the icing on the Casa Ostional cake. He brought his girlfriend to visit us one evening and he was prouder than punch. Ramiro took his patrolling duties seriously and we knew we were in good paws during our entire visit. This review could go on for pages were it not for the character limitation of VRBO, but much of it and more is documented in the guest book ... which contains nothing but glowing reviews. Book your trip to Casa Ostional and experience it all for yourself. You won't be disappointed. Thank you Mike for allowing us to experience your memorable piece of paradise. We were sad to have to say goodbye to it. Columbia Steve and Super Sue ;)
