WELL COTTAGE is a beautiful and unusual detached cottage on a quiet cul-de-sac.
About Bette Roberts
Well Cottage is owned by my Mum, Bette. Both my Mum and I run Well Cottage as a business and enjoy sharing this property with others. We love the fact that Well Cottage as an unusual and unique property which not 'not had its heart removed giving guests a truly authentic experience of modern meeting 16th Century. Once in the cottage you will feel its charm and feel its the peace of time in this detached cottage with an original Well in the Garden and having so much history and character attached to it. It was a "gem of a find" when my Mum and Dad originally bought it back in 1994 and we will never want to sell it!
Bette Roberts purchased this Cottage in 1994
Why Bette Roberts chose Bourton-on-the-Water
Because it has so much character and in the words of some of our reviewers on Trip Advisor: "perfect location within Bourton on the Water", "Lovely quiet cottage", "Beautiful cottage", "Absolutely enchanting", "worth every penny", "loved this cottage, sad to leave", "Well appointed cottage, quiet and peaceful in a picturesque setting"..................and many more.
What makes this Cottage unique
This is a unique cottage because it is one of the oldest cottages in the village which has managed to retain its original features and even has a well in the garden which would have been used by local farm hands when Bourton on the Water was mostly farm land.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Superb. Full of character and very quiet.
Well Cottage is everything we look for. Lots of character, log burner, well equipped, with off-road parking and very quiet. Decent selection of pubs and restaurants within a few minutes walk. Would thoroughly recommend.
Thanks Martin for taking the time to review Well Cottage and it pleases Mum and I that all our hard work has paid off and it meets all your expectations of what you would look for in a holiday!
Incredible treasure in a quaint village
The cottage and the property are exactly as described. Incredibly charming, well outfitted, and a perfect way to spend a few days exploring the Cotswolds. Exposed stone and timber create a rustic feel of comfort and authenticity. The bathroom is excellent and comfortable, zero issues whatsoever. Kitchen is tasteful and compact, lovingly outfitted into the constraints of the space. It is also well supplied for all kinds of cooking you may want to do. I was very impressed with this, as we have cooked several meals and were never in lack of any pots, pans or other accessories.
The living room is cozy and, with the fireplace going, quite warm. Comfortable chairs and thick carpets make the entire space very comfortable. Bookshelves with Cotswolds history and local maps and brochures are interesting to leaf through in the evening. There is easily enough space for four people to cook, dine, lounge and rest.
Special note of the fireplace - we made use of it, and it is wonderful. No issues with smoke or ash, just a pleasure to use and sit around on a cold autumn evening.
Finding the cottage is straight-forward, parking is easy and self-check-in is very nice as well. The cottage is mere steps away from the Windrush river and the center of the village.
Because this is a rather antique property, the ground floor ceilings are a little bit short, so very tall people would need to duck now and then.
I would highly recommend this place for one or two couples. You wont regret it
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this detailed, comprehensive and detailed review. Mum and I are so pleased you enjoyed your stay and want to thank you for leaving it immaculate! Your ‘highly recommended’ comment is a pleasure to read - thank you again!
An absolutely charming cottage in the Northern Cotswold Region
For our first trip to the Cotswolds we found this cottage to be perfect place to stay. The cottage is located toward the end of a long dead end road, so almost traffic free. Yet, due to its location near the Windrush river, it is less than a 5 minute walk to the heart of Bourton-on-the-Water. It includes a convenient reserved parking spot to the side of the cottage.
We loved feeling like we were living in a different time staying in the cottage with its exposed beams and rock walls and uneven floors, while also having the convenience of a modern kitchen, wonderful radiant heat, quality bed linens, comfortable furnishings, and a wonderful shower that I could have stayed under for hours. We also enjoyed using the wood burning stove each evening more for the ambiance than the need of any additional heat.
Bourton-on-the-Water has a lot of pubs, restaurants, shops, and one of the best fish and chips takeaway we have ever tried (De La Haye's) and the local Co-op store has all the supplies you need for your stay.
We enjoyed taking hikes in two different directions, one day up to Stow-on-the-Wold, and the other day to a wonderful meal at the Lamb's Inn in Great Rissington. The local tourist information office has plenty of information on what to do in the area, and the cottage was also well stocked with local tourist information.
The only caution I would express is that if you are 6 foot or taller, you will spend a lot of time ducking you head on the ground floor, as the ceiling is quite low (gives it that cozy back in time feel). Also, the bathroom is rather drafty as the window is not double glazed so when it is cold out, you can feel the cold air pour in.
All in all I would highly recommend this cottage to a couple who wanted a lovely retreat in the Cotswolds. Bette and Dawn were wonderful hosts - always prompt in their information and replies. We would definitely stay here again.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this comprehensive review not only on how you enjoyed the cottage but also for your feedback on the local restaurants, shops and local surrounds! You were great guests and we would welcome you back anytime! Thank you again.

A great Stay, magical home and a magical town
We stayed a week at Well Cottage and had a wonderful time. We couldn’t have asked for anything better in a holiday stay. The best deep claw foot bath and fantastic hot shower. The Kitchen was well equipped so we had dinner in most nights. The cottage is warm and cosy especially with the fire which we light one night. Beds super comfortable with delicious sheets and towels, excellent quality. We loved meeting Bette, she is one in a million.
There was an issue with us getting the key initially because we didn’t have wifi on our phones Home and Away didn’t send us the information on accessing the house keys early enough. All in all a great stay which I would highly recommend and Bourton on the Water is a very special place.
Thank you for taking the time to to write a review. Mum and I want to thank you for booking with us and are so pleased you loved Well Cottage and all its facilities! I have been in touch with HomeAway about your initial problem with the key and they have rectified the problem. We look forward to seeing you again!

A lovely cottage in an ideal location
We loved everything about this cottage. it had all we needed for a very comfortable stay.
The location was marvellous in a lovely central area of the village but in a quiet lane.
Dawn was very helpful. We would definitely recommend a stay in this charming cottage.
The Cotswolds are a range of hills in west-central England, sometimes called the "Heart of England". The name Cotswold means "sheep enclosure in rolling hillsides". The Cotswolds is the largest area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England and Wales. Bourton-on-the Water is famous for its High Street, flanked by long wide greens and the River Windrush which is crossed by several low, arched stone bridges which have lead Bourton being called the "Venice of the Cotswolds". Bourton is regularly voted the prettiest village in the cotswolds.
As well as having numerous shops, pubs, restaurants, cafes and attractions, Bourton is wonderfully positioned for walkers with the various long-distance footpaths and local walks which start and finish or pass through Bourton, including the Windrush Way and the Heart of England Way, which begins its 100 mile route in the village.
The list below is a very small sample to give you a flavour for the wide range of attractions and activities that are available in and around the Cotswolds. There is also a local Tourist Information Centre in Bourton on the Water which can give you much more information:
- Blenheim Palace
- Warwick Castle
- Cheltenham Race Course
- Cotswold Farm Park
- Batsford Arboretum
- Highgrove (book in advance)
- Broadway Tower Country Park
- Snowshil Manor and Garden
So much to see, too little time!
