San Pancho is such a great town. Unlike Sayulita which is beset with poor sanitation, huge crowds and traffic and Punta de Mita which is overpriced and pretentious, San Pancho is an authentic coastal village with historic and modern Mexican culture (music, art, food, handicrafts) that make it unique and lots of fun to explore. The people are friendly, helpful, and enjoy visitors. It's a village that succeeds in bridging the cultural gap between Mexicans and Americans/Canadians/Europeans/whomever so that you feel a member of the community, and not just a tourist. And the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper Travel Section in Sept 2011 rated San Pancho as one of the most fun and SAFEST destinations in Mexico.
Things to enjoy in San Pancho: slow down your lifestyle by visiting the beach at sunset; prepare great meals with fresh seafood and vegetables; practice your Spanish; enjoy the tropical beauty of the gorgeous garden below from the master bedroom balcony; listen to the green parrots as they fly overhead in the evenings; have friends over and relax in the large open air palapa livingroom.
We very much enjoyed the month of March in this lovely upstairs apartment. I especially enjoyed the balcony off the bedroom watching all the different species of birds in the early morning and evening, very peaceful, relaxing...I'm thinking maybe this is the origin of the apartment name:) lovely open concept, high ceiling living room, nice breezes flow through so no need for AC. Everything you need to prepare nice meals, comfortable bed, everything worked fine. Property manager Octavio and wife looks after property well and available should you need them. Also beautiful garden and pool area for relaxing. Short walk to beach. San Pancho has charm and culture...a vibe like no other town and we've been to lots. We loved SP and thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this apartment. Highly recommend and would love to return again some day.
Dont hesitate , its a lovely place, Jane and John ( the owners) are very nice. Even thinking of going back !
Je suis rester presqu'un mois, l'appartement ainsi que le petit village de San Pancho etaient fantastique.
Je pense même y retourner.....
We stayed in the upper two bedroom apartment - 2 adults + 2 kids. Lovely tile floors, charming palapa roof, and romantic master bedroom with doors that open out to a terrace overlooking the small pool and lush courtyard. Don't miss the sunsets at the beach, where everyone gathers to see it. We traveled with small kids (ages 3 and 9) and it was a safe and fun place for them. The small dipping pool was nice for in between beach trips. We took a local company called Diva Tours for transfer from the airport, which I recommend as it was clean and comfy. This is a nice little slice of Mexican culture, so be aware that there are roosters that crow early every morning, and an occasional gas truck, tortilla truck, or other vendor driving down the street blaring a speakerphone - kind of like an ice cream truck back home, only louder and more frequent. And for smaller kids, the walk to the beach can get long if you are making several round trips per day. For me, it was good exercise for working off the good food and fresh tortillas. The owners Jane and John were very friendly and I enjoyed hearing their stories of traveling through Mexico and how they came to San Pancho. We've been to the PVR area before a few times, either in Bucerias or Sayulita but were looking for an even smaller town. San Pancho was great! But please be aware this town is for a certain type of traveler who wants to see real culture and real people, rather than being pampered in 5-star resorts. San Pancho is great for what it DOESN'T have. It doesn't have ritzy hotels or resorts. It doesn't have a bunch of pushy vendors. It doesn't have western chain restaurants. It doesn't seem to have dance clubs or late night bars. A lot of things haven't been translated to english, which is only spoken occasionally. You might be taken aback by the frequent dogs and chickens freely roaming the streets, or the friendliness of a stranger saying buenos dias without an ulterior motive. My point is... all of this might be considered either too boring or too difficult for some types of travelers. But to pass over it because of those reasons is to entirely miss the point. That is exactly what makes it charming. It is a refreshing insight into Mexican culture rather than being too glamorized, too modernized, too clean, too touristy. The reason I'm making this point is that I know travelers in my circle of friends/family who would consider this town to be a bit too much of an adventure for them but it was great for us!
My husband and I stayed upstairs in the Bird of Paradise, and we could not have been more pleased with the comfort of our stay. The apartment has two bedrooms, a lovely and private patio off of the master bedroom, full kitchen with everything needed, a very large living room with surrounding windows, and the palapa roof gives it the authentic feel of a truly Mexican home. We enjoyed the pool in the beautiful backyard and garden area, as well as storage space in the garage for our surfboards. The house is located in a great and safe neighborhood with many friendly local people to visit with, and the walk through town to the beach makes it easy to keep up with all the awesome things happening in San Pancho. The owners are extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable on the area. We would recommend staying here to our closest friends, and we can't wait to return ourselves.
Agree with all below about the casa, very large, numerous wonderful places to relax, hang out. Bring some books, games & movies. I'd caution for older folks the walk from the beach is a good 15 minutes easy. A 2012 review mentions option of a bus, we didn't see one in 2014. However after you leave the beach and walk through the town and the humidity gets you, then you arrive back home and jump in the pool. It was perfect to cool us down and beat the afternoon humidity. Then we'd spend the afternoon lounging and reading. The garden is lush and beautiful. The neighborhood is not quiet, be ready for roosters waking you up, the fruitas y pan y gas trucks and every other kind of truck up and down the street all day selling stuff. I felt like we got a real slice of life I just wouldn't want anyone to come here seeking quiet. Its a real town and if you are up for it its a great house. Wish we'd explored the Cultural Center more, it was often closed in the day as we went by. Adjust your time schedule because many things only come to life much later in the evening. The beach was so great, waaaay more low key than Sayulita which was a tourist trap with vendors soliciting you to buy something every 2 minutes. Pull up a chaise, they will bring you a Cerveza, enjoy the sunset. When you want excitement Sayulita was a fun 20 minute bus ride away. Plenty of expats on the bus to help make sure you get on the right one. No need for a car at all. All in all a really great experience for our family.
We loved the garden and pool at this rental home - access to beach was just a short walk through town - San Pancho is delightful - Octavio and Mayela were delightful property stewards - we look forward to coming back!
Entre Amigos is a non-profit bi-lingual community center in San Pancho, where you can take classes in yoga, Spanish, dance, or enjoy their art festivals and lecture series. Children can take art classes, use the children's library, or learn dance and theater. There is live theater, Cirque de Soleil performances by local children, and live music almost every night at cafes and restaurants in the village.
Every Tuesday morning, a farmers market takes place in the plaza where you can find organic produce, food, crafts and music.
Regional soccer matches are played in town almost every week and international horse polo matches will begin in 2016.
