Mas Sevenne is an ancient stone mas in the heart of the beautiful and very unspoilt Cevennes region, just outside the Cevennes National Park. The villa has pretty views of the surrounding wooded hills and valleys. There is a private and sheltered swimming pool in the garden.
The imposing old stone building has recently been restored and is now a charming and tasteful mixture of old and new. The owners have employed talented local craftsmen to create some unusual effects, for example the fashionable tadelakt technique from Marrakesh which uses lime plaster to give walls and surfaces a luxurious and soft aspect and of course many of the floors are made of the ubiquitous local chestnut wood. The interior is a constant surprise, with secret corners and undulating walls where one might imagine hard angular rooms, and all the rooms seem to have a different, but equally pleasing feeling.
Robert Louis Stevenson, like many before and after, came here to think and to walk. Looking out over the Vallee Francaise from the breathtaking road that was carved through the Cevennes by Louis XIV s army, you will see little evidence of any change to the landscape since those times. Nothing but tiers of wooded hills fading to the distance with tiny villages huddled around their precious springs and linked by thousands of footpaths, still trodden by local farmers with their goats.
Dramatic gorges with aquamarine rivers cut through the landscape and now of course local companies will hire out canoes to explore these beautiful, secret places.
The owners live discreetly on site. They use a separate entrance and are very respectful of our clients privacy.
Please note; there are some unexpected slopes and drops from the garden.
This spacious and imposing bastide , originally built in the 1700 s, has recently been renovated and provides 350m2 of inspiring living accommodation. The villa is decorated with interesting and contemporary furniture and artefacts, some from North Africa and some from Indonesia, featuring tadelakt Moroccan style finishes in the bathrooms. Every room is furnished individually and with panache. The outlook from both house and garden is pretty, with the classic Cevennes view of very unspoilt wooded hilltops and valleys.

Nearby Attractions & Activities
The little town of St Hippolyte, 5 minutes (4km) from the villa, is situated close to the Cevennes but only 50km from the coast and from the larger towns of Montpellier and Nimes. St Hippolyte has all the necessary amenities, including doctors, a dentist, a pharmacy, several restaurants, a larger supermarket, bakeries, butcher.
It is less than one hour to Nimes, with its imposing Roman amphitheatre and fantastic street markets, plus the famous aquaduct the Pont du Gard. Montpellier, a bustling university town, is approx one hour away and the beaches of the Mediterranean (Grau du Roi and Grande Motte) are a similar distance away.
There are plenty of villages and small towns in the Cevennes to discover and explore, for example, La-Garde-Guerin, which is fortified and the very attractive small village of Le Pont-de-Montvert . Why not visit Mende, before setting south to explore the interior wilderness around Mont Lozere, the highest peak in the Cevennes. You can get within a couple of kilometres of the summit of Mont Lozere by car, via Le Bleymard.
In the south there is the pretty village of Florac and Mont Aigoual which has views that extend for further than you can imagine on a clear day and is a popular stage of the Tour de France. The pretty towns of Vigan and Anduze are at the southern end of the region too.
The best way to explore the Cevennes is on foot or by bicycle and if you are experienced there are several major walking routes - including the GR67 130km Tour of the Cevennes . There are bicycles available to hire in many villages and of course this is perfect mountain biking country.
The Cevennes are criss-crossed by rivers and lakes and dramatic limestone gorges so there are plenty of canoeing and wild swimming opportunities locally and the nearest river is only 10 minutes away.
Another very peaceful way of exploring the landscape is on horseback and there are stables nearby from where you can do this.
The villa owners are very happy to help our clients organise activities and will also point guests in the direction of recommended local restaurants and attractions.
