About Bobbie Burdick
I moved to Maine 22 years ago, thinking it may be a temporary stay. I never left. Nature is one of the most important things to me and Acadia offers more than I can possibly keep up with in my spare time. In the middle of summer I still am able to hike without seeing another soul, go for a bike ride any time of day, kayak in any number of lakes or coves, and swim at the end of a long day. As a landscape designer I see the beauty of nature and capture that in my work. And for those days when I just want to get away, I find solace in the fact that I can walk out my back door and step into Acadia National Park.
Bobbie Burdick purchased this Cottage in 2000
Why Bobbie Burdick chose Mount Desert
My office was located on Mount Desert Island for nearly 9 years. The structure that housed it was previously a seasonal rental and it begged to become 'one' again. I completely renovated the interior a few years ago, I moved my office to a neighboring town, and Ripples Cottage was reborn. Since then each off season I do more improvements to make your stay more enjoyable each summer.
What makes this Cottage unique
Ripples Cottage is located on a quiet side street with little traffic. One of the things my family and I love about staying there is the solitude of the space. Being set back from the road even when cars do pass by, we feel protected. We also love the meadow behind the house and woods edge that forms the perimeter of the property. It is a true home away from home feeling for us when we have the luxury of staying in our own rental.

Our stay at Ripples what everything I had hoped it would be. The property is lovely, immaculately clean, and well kept. Bobbi is a gracious and accommodating host, even when we called to have her overnight my husband's work phone he left in a drawer when we left!
Clearcutting of side lot at 7:00 am put damper on the rental
I was looking for a quiet place near long pond. Before I reserved the house I specifically asked about the surrounding property and was assured that the owner owns the undeveloped acreage surrounding the property. It sounded perfect. What she failed to tell me is that she is building a road on the land and the construction would start at 7:00 am outside our bedroom window. When I said we were leaving and asked for a refund she refused and told us it was a beautiful day to spend in the acadia. She then complained that to stop the construction would cost her $1000.00 a day. It would have been cheaper to give us the refund. She stopped the construction at 3:00 in the afternoon. Needless to say if i had been told we would have been witnessing clearcutting of the area I would not have stayed there. It's standard practice to let a customer know about construction on the premises so that they know what their buying particularly since I asked about the area. It was very disappointing.
However the cottage is cute well stocked clean and spacious with a great screened porch. It's a bit far from bar harbor and the carriage trails but close to some hiking trails and long pond. I definitely suggest waiting until the owner is done with constructing her subdivision before renting this cottage. Thereafter it will be a great place to stay.
We appreciate the feedback. The 3 day construction project on the neighboring property was a new driveway that was supposed to be installed in early May before any seasonal tenants arrived. Unfortunately, I was not informed when the work would actually be done, and when we learned it had begun we put a stop to it immediately. This did create a substantial cost penalty, but was more than happy to do as it was an inconvenience to our tenants at the time. The project is now complete and cottage rests in a peaceful setting that we are happy to share with our future tenants. While preparing for this weeks tenants I experienced loons calling to each other across the pond and an eagle soaring overhead to its nearby nest. We love bordering the quiet side of Acadia National Park with this rental and look forward to supporting future tenants in any way we can.
Wonderful cottage experience
We just completed a great week at Ripples as a family. Been to MDI twice in past but never stayed on quiet side until now. Had a wonderful time! Walked down the road to great canoeing. Quick drive to the start of multiple incredible hikes and the carriage roads for biking. The cottage was clean, well maintained and serene. Spent many mornings sipping coffee on the screened porch and enjoying the beauty that surrounds the cottage. More than spacious enough for a family of 4 and would easily accommodate two more. Owner was responsive, professional and provided easy check in. Would definitely recommend a trip to the quiet side at this lovely cottage :)
Wonderful Home Away from Home
We had not been to MDI in over 20 years and were delighted to return. Ripples Cottage was a perfect "home base": centrally located, with a mountain trail and kayak launch just down the street. The cottage itself was spacious, comfortable and well-apponted (especially the bedding and the towels). Be sure to sit in the Adirondack chairs out by the balsam stand in the yard and take a deep breath. As others have said, Bobbie was great to work with and all the arrangements could not have been simpler. Ripples Cottage is highly recommended, as is the "quiet side" of MDI. We hope to return soon!
Clean, spacious and comfortable cottage
We would like to keep this charming cottage as a secret, but feel compelled to let others know what a find it is. Bobbie was great to work with and made us feel welcomed before we even arrived. It's a great location--off the beaten trail but close to kayaking, biking and hiking trails and a quick ride into town. The cottage is exactly as pictured and it was quite spacious for a family of four. The beds were heavenly, the kitchen well-appointed and the cottage was spotless. We enjoyed a wonderful week full of outdoor activiities on MDI and highly recommend Ripples Cottage as home base.
Great cottage for a family vacation
Our family of four was very comfortable at Ripples Cottage for our week on MDI. It's peaceful, clean, grounds are well kept and we were able to use the garage to store our bikes and beach gear which was a pleasant surprise we weren't expecting. We all slept great which helped out with our busy week. Our favorite hike of the week was at Beech Mountain just a couple minutes from the house. We spent a couple days at Sand Beach in Acadia which is still a hit with the kids (ok, parents too!), biked the carriage trails, saw a comedy show and went back to some of our favorite restaurants (Jack Russell's Steakhouse, West St Cafe and Geddys). Bobbie, the owner, was excellent to deal with via email as well as in person. We are already looking forward to August 2015 and renting this property again. We can't think of a better place to spend a week as a family!
Somesville is centrally located on Mount Desert Island with neighboring towns being an equal distance away - about 10-15 minutes from Ripples Cottage. Acadia National Park encompasses much of the Island and is the home to vacationers from all over the world. Ripples Cottage is close to Acadia's network of carriage roads and nearby lakes and ocean. One can walk from Ripples Cottage to Long Pond, which offers swimming, fishing, canoe & kayak rentals. If a hike is in the daily agenda Beech Mtn. is just 2 miles from the cottage. The Island Explorer free bus system can be picked up just 1 1/2 miles away. This pristine location is perfect for those who are looking for a quiet area that is centrally located to beaches, mountains, restaurants, museums and theaters. Other Activities: kayaking and canoeing
