Franschhoek is a large, spacious 3 bedroom house located just outside the village of La Roque-Gageac. Perched on the hillside affords the house outstanding views of the village, the river and surrounding areas. La Roque-Gageac village and amenities are easily accessible by a short car ride, otherwise a public footpath to the village is located about 300 metres from the property. Franschhoek's 3 bedrooms comfortably sleep 6 people - two of the bedrooms are equipped with SuperKing size beds, which can also convert into two single beds per bedroom. The Master bedroom is furnished with a King size bed. There is a downstairs toilet and shower, as well as a separate guest toilet. Upstairs has a large bathroom with a bath, toilet and bidet. There is an indoor dining room and lounge area, but the favourite area for most is the generous outside terrace, with a large table and chairs to accommodate alfresco dining, whilst enjoying the terraced garden and spectacular views. The village hosts a number of good restaurants and snack bars, a bakery, quaint shops, an ATM, Post Office and a weekly market. Within the surrounding area, there are a number of various activities such as walking, cycling, canoeing and hot air ballooning.
Michael - British and Chantal - South African are the new owners of Franschhoek in La Roque-Gageac.
We are both passionate about exploring new and exciting destinations, and due to both of us having worked at sea for a number of years, have been very fortunate in having had the opportunity of travelling extensively. We currently reside in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
Michael & Chantal Robertshaw purchased this house in 2015
We love the contemporary Scandinavian design. The house exudes warmth, is spacious, airy and light. We particularly enjoy this area of The Dordogne, and who could resist the spectacular views that the property has to offer.
Spacious, very clean and well equipped house.
We looked at many options to stay in the area and are very happy with this selection.
The house is on the top of the hill and provides great views of the river and village from the patio, kitchen, living room. The patio is equipped with large and small tables, chairs, lounge chairs and motorized retractable awning if needed.
Well equipped kitchen, modern bathrooms, good size bedrooms.
It is very quiet and private. Easy communication with the owners.
We enjoyed our stay.
We had an absolutely fantastic time here and the holiday was made all the better for a perfect house. The house is very spacious and furnished to a high standard with care and thought being taken to ensure the holiday went without any problems or hassle. We are a family of 4 with a 14 and 12 year old so wi-fi is a must as far as they are concerned and they were not disappointed as the wi-fi connection was superb.
The house is situated in a wonderful spacious plot, not overlooked by other houses in a quite setting and with wonderful views. Sitting on the terrace we saw an array of wildlife: red squirrels, eagles, birds, bats and butterflies as well as watching hot air balloons in the mornings and evenings.
The kitchen is well equipped with a dishwasher and there is a washing machine and plenty of drying space in the 'cave' as well as outside.
We wouldn't hesitate to visit again and the owners and manager are lovely and communication with them was great - we are grateful that they share their wonderful house.
There is plenty to do for all ages in the area and a highlight of our trip was canoeing down the Dordogne.
We stayed for a week in July/August. The house is in a great, quiet location and close to the village of la Roque. It boasts one of the best views available over the town and river. Stunning with the mist over the village in the mornings, and also at sunset.
The pictures of the house tell only half the story. It is well laid out with 3 spacious air conditioned double bedrooms with ample linen, 2 1/2 great bathrooms. The communal areas are very comfortable, with a large lounge room and smart dining room. Well appointed kitchen with ample informal dining space. Nothing lacking and fresh coffee, condiments and supplies kindly provided. The air con works very well and was a god-send in the warm days. The Wifi also worked very well.
The house served us wonderfully well during our week long stay, both for days of relaxation and also as a base and daily explorations of the Dordogne. It was a pleasure to return to after our day trips. We regarded a car as essential.
The house can be tricky to get to as the road is unnamed. Use coordinates 44.822598, 1.193415 in Google Maps and/or your GPS.
Michael and Chantal were easy to communicate with and we were also referred to a local contact if needed.
Altogether a wonderful stay and highly recommended for 3 couples or families.
Very well equipped immaculate house set in the most beautiful location overlooking the Dordogne and La Roque Gageac. Car is essential to enjoy the area and get provisions. Owners extremely helpful, polite and genuinely open. Very spacious house with comfortable furnishings both indoors and outdoors. Would recommend this house to everyone for a most enjoyable and relaxing holiday. Canoeing and cycling are offered close by in the village. We enjoyed both. Lovely area for walking too.
This gite is very well set up for a large group or family. Location is perfect; on hill overlooking La Roque-Gageac, which is in the middle of most of the sights of the Dordogne. The house has all the amenities you need, was spotlessly clean and well equipped. Communication with the owners was very easy and informative. The entire house and garden are exactly as the pictures show.
You can't find it with a GPS so you will need to use the written instructions sent by the owners, but they were easy to follow. My large SUV had a few dicey moments coming up to the gite (stone walls, narrow lanes) and you might want a 4 wheel drive, it's steep. The driveway is large and I could turn around easily; you can get 3-4 cars in there. The walking path to the village is steep and rocky in spots but it was way to find and use.
The house has 3 bedrooms, all with a double bed that I believe can be split into 2 twins. 2.5 bathrooms, plenty of hot water and water pressure. Living room was very comfortable. Kitchen was well equipped with everything including coffee pods, salt and pepper, foil and plastic wrap, garbage bags, etc. There is a large fridge and freezer. Washer and dryer in the (attached) garage-type room worked very well. Air conditioning in the bedrooms worked well and was very necessary in June; the rest of the house was fine with doors and windows open.
Wifi worked great. Terrace was very nice -- it was a little too hot with the sun in the early evening but later was perfect. (The sun shade is great but due to the angle of the hill, from about 7-8pm it was direct sun). The window screens on all windows is very rare in Europe but great to have, because it was a little buggy outside. There is a peacock (?) next door that likes to yell at you a bit, but he quiets down during sleeping hours. The house is quiet...we never saw anyone else but we did enjoy the view of 3 castles from the terrace. Except the mornings with mist, when we felt like we were in the clouds.
We would definitely stay again and I will recommend it to anyone traveling to the area.
We had a 7 night stay at this beautiful house, which is nestled into the hillside above the lovely village of La Roque-Gageac. With the large patio and terraced garden facing down the countryside, overlooking the village itself, it gave extra views of the beautiful surrounding valley of the Dordogne - a picture perfect shot that we couldn't ever tire of!.
The house and gardens are framed by natural woodland, allowing it to be very secluded and private and we even saw a deer several mornings wandering through the garden, whilst eating our breakfast on the terrace!
The local boulangerie is a 5 minute drive/20 minute walk away in La Roque-Gageac village itself, where you can buy cheap but fresh and delicious baguettes and croissants. We also had a fantastic evening meal in La Belle Etoile restaurant, which was recommended by the owners and it did not disappoint, proving to be one of our best meals of the holiday (and surprisingly not too expensive, either)!
The house itself is a fantastic property with very large, spacious bedrooms. The communal areas are also very spacious and the interiors have a country cottage style mixed with clean modern living, with beautiful touches to the rooms. The kitchen is a great size for cooking and entertaining and the owners had thought of everything you might possibly need!
Mike and Chantal, the owners of the property were very friendly and helpful when communicating over e-mail on the lead up to our stay. They had provided lots of information, leaflets and suggestions for the local area and further afield, which gave us a good starting point for exploring the area ourselves.
We found this property on the website and loved the look of the house and area and decided to book, despite no previous reviews. We later found out that they have had the property for less than a year. Having stayed there now, we can confidently say that we thought that the price represents real value for money and we would happily stay there again. We have spent the time since we got back telling friends and family what a lovely, idyllic place this is for a relaxing break away.
Five of the 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France' - Most beautiful villages of France of which La Roque-Gageac is one of are situated within 15 Kms of this stunning stretch of the beautiful Dordogne river. These charming villages offer historic architecture and unique shops offering local produce and fantastic restaurants completed by stunning picture perfect views.
This along with the historic Market town of Sarlat la Caneda, Les Eyzies, Racamador and many more quaint historic villages make the area a must see.
Sample the many local markets for fresh local produce, visit the castles of Beynac and Castlenaud, as well as the beautiful gardens of Marqueyssac.
Go for a gentle sail along the river in a traditional flat bottom boat known as Garbares, or for the more adventurous try the canoeing and admire the scenery from the river.
