About the property

4 bedrooms+, 3 bathrooms, sleeps 11 - 14

This beautiful log chalet is located just a few minutes walk to the ski lifts of Fernie Alpine Resort with ski to the door convenience. Log beds, pine floor, and woodburning fireplace add to the charm of our Black Bear Chalet. In fact, we adopted a stuffed black bear from Fernie Mountain while we were building our home and he is still present as the keeper of our chalet.

Our chalet is ideal for large families or groups who love to cook and socialize around our large kitchen table, built by one of the owners. Large decks off the kitchen and great room, a,propane barbecue, and a commercial hot tub aid to the enjoyment of the secluded property. A fire pit overlooks the lake at the back of the property, giving you a back to nature feel. It truly is a little piece of Canadian paradise!

The property also has a basement suite, occupied by long term tenants. The basement suite has a completely separate entrance to ensure privacy for our chalet guests. The basement tenants can be used as a resource for local dining and activity recommendations.

About Lana Radchenko

Myles, brother Colin and wife Lana Radchenko built the Black Bear Chalet in 1990. Our first season of rentals was in 1991, and we have been renting it ever since. Our guests enjoy all seasons throughout the year in this vacation paradise.

Myles Radchenko is a retired biology high school teacher, originally from Swift Current, now located in Vaseux, Lake. BC.

Lana & Colin Radchenko are originally from Saskatoon, and now are located in San Diego. Lana is a chartered accountant working for Sempra Energy. Colin a was a high school teacher, but now is the General Manager and a PGA professional at Steele Canyon Golf Course in San Diego, CA and Bear Creek Golf Course in Murrieta, CA.

Lana Radchenko purchased this chalet in 1991

Why Lana Radchenko chose Fernie

As avid skiiers, we first fell in love with Fernie because of the DEEP powder snow in the winter season. Later, we learned Fernie is a great place to be all year around - skiing, snowboarding, ski-doing, hiking, biking, fishing, rafting, and of course, golf!

Guestbook comments from the owner

For 10years plus the Edwards family has been going on an annual ski trip. This was our first trip to Fernie. We've all enjoyed our stay at the chalet - especially the space and the close proximity to the hill!

3.5 is more accurate

  • 3 of 5

The chalet was very comfortable and clean. The only issues for us were the showers are tiny and there is only 1 tv.

Property is superb in nearly all respects

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen, excellent amenities, spotlessly clean, awesome bathtub (nice after a day's skiing).

Criticisms: Hot tub water level was barely adequate, kitchen knives were dull, and of poor quality (but I am unbelievably fussy about my knives, and if they were good quality, there is a risk someone would walk off with them...so I get it-next time I will bring my own knives). The big problem is that the "ski-in convenience" is greatly exaggerated. There may be a way to access a trail to the property, but we couldn't find it. If it does exist, it needs to be better explained. A map would be nice. We wound up having to drive to the parking lot in multiple vehicles. The only other choice is an uphill walk with all your gear. You may be able to ski in, but there is no easy way to get back to the mountain. When I am paying this much, I want to be able to walk out my front door, click on my skis, and ski to the closest lift. Would not rent again, but only for this reason. Hard to go wrong on this one otherwise.

Was a pleasant stay only complaint was the hot tub was dirty and low in water.

  • 4 of 5

Was a great place to stay with a couple families. Would have been a five star if we didn't have to deal with the hot tub.

Owner's Response: We regret the sub-standard condition of the hot tub, and have rectified the issue with our hot tub maintenance company. It is clean, in good working order now, and ready for our guests to enjoy under the stars for some rest and relaxation. We hope you can stay at our log chalet again! Thank-you, Lana

Nice but over priced

  • 3 of 5

It was a beautiful property however over priced. The hot tub didn't work so we were unable to use it. We stayed over the Christmas season and were disappointed that there weren't any decorations or Xmas lights. For the cost, it would have been a nice touch.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately a part failed on the hot tub during your stay. We have since repaired the tub and will be available for your next stay! Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay especially being close to the ski area and the ability to walk to the hill with small children.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Our week long stay in Black Bear Chalet was great. The location was perfect with great snow on the mountain and an easy drive into Fernie. There was a very pleasant ambience about the chalet, with the log structure, the fire place and the hot tub. The kitchen was well stocked with appliances and cooking implements and the BBQ was very handy. Our four grown children met us there and we each took a turn cooking the evening meal. It was a fun way to share our time together. Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us.

Known for its phenomenal skiing, Fernie has also grown to be a year round recreation site. Whether it is skiing on the 875 cm (that's almost 27 feet) of snow that Fernie gets yearly or enjoying a river raft or golf game at one of the 5 nearby courses. Fernie has it all!

Golf: There are six top notch golf courses within 15 to 60 minute drive including:

- Fernie Golf Course

- Trickle Creek Golf Course

- Boot Leg Gap Golf Course
