Ainani Jade Ohana Home near Volcano!

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,200 sq. ft.
Property type house

About the property

Ainani Jade Ohana: 3 bed/2 bath upstairs with 3 bed/1 bath downstairs!

Jade Ohana is a spacious beautified home with vaulted ceilings and many large windows overlooking 18' Hapu'u ferns in a rainforest setting, with serene peaceful views whether it is sunny, misty or rainy.

Albeit we are in Hawaii, at the 4,000 foot elevation and being a rain forest it can get cool especially in the evenings. Our home is cozy and warm for three reasons; we have gas heaters, it is fully carpeted and all the beds have electric blankets. Also many dehumidifiers keep it dry and warm.

UPSTAIRS, is second story living, three bedrooms, one king and three full beds, two full bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen, large vaulted living/dining room. Nicely furnished, two black leather couches with four recliners, a 50" TV, Cable, video library, wireless internet (Changed providers/ better service 8/2016). Now with a water filtration system for fresh drinking water.

UPSTAIRS & DOWNSTAIRS can be rented separately.

Rented together they are available to sleep up to 14 people

This is a very clean, very nice, very comfortable, reasonably priced place to stay.

Only a little over two miles to the Volcano National Park. Turn onto Jade Avenue go down 8 blocks look for JADEHOUSE sign & there you are.

The JADEHOUSE, is at 11-3853 Jade Avenue.

Jade House is located in the center of the East side of the Big Island, with an easy 30 minute drive

North (to Hilo),

South (to Naalehu), or

East (to the Ocean)

We have many very nice reviews.

A couple or reviews mentioned a "musty odor" noticed downstairs. After much concern and hiring a professional handy-man/ plumber the matter was thoroughly investigated and taken care of and now again we have nice, clean, fresh, air throughout the house.

About Merlenna Higby

We love Hawaii, especially the weather, and the big island has everything big. Moved from Monterey California a beautiful area to an even more beautiful area.

And most exciting of all we live right next to an active volcano, how many people can say that.

Merlenna Higby purchased this house in 2006

Why Merlenna Higby chose Volcano

Up to lately a million visitors a year, thought this might be a rather interesting way to add income.

What makes this house unique

Great location near the park

  • 5 of 5

We made a quick 2 day trip to the Big Island, so this was an ideal place to stay. The house was very comfortable and met our needs. We were able to see the lava after dark at Jaggar Museum and make it home in decent time. We spent very little time in the house, but it was very comfortable. It even had a wood stove for chilly nights. The owners were very easy to work with and we will rent from them again, when we return.

Wonderful house in the forest

  • 4 of 5

Ainani Jade is a very convenient place to explore HAVO . The location in a quiet forest close to Volcano is perfect, the rooms are quite large , the decor is nice and cosy, and the house has all the required amenities including some pleasant surprises, such as bed heating and supplies for breakfast. We could also use the laundry facilities, which was very convenient. The overall experience was quite positive and we definitely recommend this property

Lovely home in the middle of the ohia forest

  • 3 of 5

For our family of 10 the house was very comfortable and attractively decorated. The master bed was very comfortable. The views from the second level of the ohia/fern forest totally added to the volcano, big island atmosphere. We had a few issues if corrected would add great value to the rental. They are... 1, black sand-like grains were on the sheet of one of the beds downstairs; 2, ran out of napkins; 3, no tissue boxes; 4, slow wifi- could not connect to the internet; 5, t.v. console falling apart which is a danger. It is sagging and trim fell off.

Nice if you only need upstairs and nobody is downstairs

  • 3 of 5

We were glad to be there for just the one night and although the total bill was over $400 ($110 for cleaning fee) it was still less than many places in the area for our group of 8 people. Be aware even with the large cleaning fee signs indicated that we must leave the kitchen as we found it so we spend the morning washing our dishes, towel drying them and putting everything away! We aren't a messy bunch but for that price it seems we could have just left the dishes in the drying rack.

We were just there and being summer things were dry however the downstairs did have a strong odor (perhaps cleaner to cover the mold smell) which did cause breathing problems for some of us who were there. In Hawaii the musty smell is common and I am sure a challenge for owners! The house has some kind of motor that isn't well insulated combined with single pane windows, though it is in a box under the outside staircase, so the noise woke anyone on that side of the house at midnight, 2 am, 4 am and the house was up by 6 am.

The insulation between the upstairs and downstairs is lacking so if you were upstairs in a bathroom you could hear everything going on downstairs, this would have been terrible if we hadn't had both units! Also, downstairs every time someone walked barefoot across the floor it sounded like they were marching in boots.

The owners do have the place well stocked, nicely furnished and clean and were clear about the need to bring drinking water as the water there is not for drinking.

We enjoyed all the windows and opened them up to get a nice breeze throughout the unit, it was of course near 90 degrees that day but with all those windows we didn't miss having air conditioning. It was a nicely decorated unit with plenty of sleeping space, providing that someone can stay downstairs without allergic reaction and with earplugs to mute the sound of the motor outside the window.

Owner's Response: Ouch negative reviews are just devastating to anyones business and we work hard not to receive any. We are very sorry you have had this experience. In our efforts to stop the odor problem, we first purchased four new dehumidifiers to keep the air dryer so mold spores would find it more difficult to grow and produce. We also encouraged not opening doors and windows and letting in the moisture laden rainforest air or at least afterwards closing the windows and turning on the dehumidifiers to dry out and kill the spores that have arrived. Then we found and disposed of a mat outside the downstairs unit causing a little of the problem. But a bigger problem was finally, finally realized and is being addressed with earnestness. This has been a persistent and disturbing problem as a few others have commented. We have been striving to resolve this issue for weeks into months with little success, but now we feel we have uncovered its source and are attacking it with real vigor. We guarantee clean fresh air will be the result. The cleaning fee is for the use of two units not one. And it is so nice you washed your dishes, as many do not. We do have fresh filtered drinking water spigots on the upstairs & downstairs sinks, (perhaps we need a little sign). A leaking toilet flapper valve was the reason why the water pump was turning on and off all night. (The leaking flapper valve caused all the water to drain from our catchment tank and we had to order a delivery of fresh water, for a few hundred dollars). Also we had to cancel the next guests staying there, just one of those flukes The upstairs, downstairs noise issue, when we asked, most have been okay with. Some staying downstairs for a few weeks while others coming and going upstairs. Still a sound deadening installation is on our agenda to help that issue also. The cleanup fee, is so necessary, some people are so messy. Sounds like you were clean and nice guests, wish we could go back and redo your stay to make it a more pleasant affair.
