Jade Ohana is a spacious beautified home with vaulted ceilings and many large windows overlooking 18' Hapu'u ferns in a rainforest setting, with serene peaceful views whether it is sunny, misty or rainy.
Albeit we are in Hawaii, at the 4,000 foot elevation and being a rain forest it can get cool especially in the evenings. Our home is cozy and warm for three reasons; we have gas heaters, it is fully carpeted and all the beds have electric blankets. Also many dehumidifiers keep it dry and warm.
UPSTAIRS, is second story living, three bedrooms, one king and three full beds, two full bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen, large vaulted living/dining room. Nicely furnished, two black leather couches with four recliners, a 50" TV, Cable, video library, wireless internet (Changed providers/ better service 8/2016). Now with a water filtration system for fresh drinking water.

We have many very nice reviews.
A couple or reviews mentioned a "musty odor" noticed downstairs. After much concern and hiring a professional handy-man/ plumber the matter was thoroughly investigated and taken care of and now again we have nice, clean, fresh, air throughout the house.
We love Hawaii, especially the weather, and the big island has everything big. Moved from Monterey California a beautiful area to an even more beautiful area.
And most exciting of all we live right next to an active volcano, how many people can say that.
Merlenna Higby purchased this house in 2006
Up to lately a million visitors a year, thought this might be a rather interesting way to add income.
NOW WITH A FORCED AIR GAS HEATER, it's sooo cozy. Close to the Park entrance & easy to find, in the dark. With large windows & huge 15' Hapu'u ferns everywhere, so peaceful & nice. Full kitchen, woodstove, vaulted ceilings, fully carpeted... makes you want to stay longer
For our family of 10 the house was very comfortable and attractively decorated. The master bed was very comfortable. The views from the second level of the ohia/fern forest totally added to the volcano, big island atmosphere. We had a few issues if corrected would add great value to the rental. They are... 1, black sand-like grains were on the sheet of one of the beds downstairs; 2, ran out of napkins; 3, no tissue boxes; 4, slow wifi- could not connect to the internet; 5, t.v. console falling apart which is a danger. It is sagging and trim fell off.
We were glad to be there for just the one night and although the total bill was over $400 ($110 for cleaning fee) it was still less than many places in the area for our group of 8 people. Be aware even with the large cleaning fee signs indicated that we must leave the kitchen as we found it so we spend the morning washing our dishes, towel drying them and putting everything away! We aren't a messy bunch but for that price it seems we could have just left the dishes in the drying rack.
We were just there and being summer things were dry however the downstairs did have a strong odor (perhaps cleaner to cover the mold smell) which did cause breathing problems for some of us who were there. In Hawaii the musty smell is common and I am sure a challenge for owners! The house has some kind of motor that isn't well insulated combined with single pane windows, though it is in a box under the outside staircase, so the noise woke anyone on that side of the house at midnight, 2 am, 4 am and the house was up by 6 am.
The insulation between the upstairs and downstairs is lacking so if you were upstairs in a bathroom you could hear everything going on downstairs, this would have been terrible if we hadn't had both units! Also, downstairs every time someone walked barefoot across the floor it sounded like they were marching in boots.
The owners do have the place well stocked, nicely furnished and clean and were clear about the need to bring drinking water as the water there is not for drinking.
We enjoyed all the windows and opened them up to get a nice breeze throughout the unit, it was of course near 90 degrees that day but with all those windows we didn't miss having air conditioning. It was a nicely decorated unit with plenty of sleeping space, providing that someone can stay downstairs without allergic reaction and with earplugs to mute the sound of the motor outside the window.
Worked well for an overnight trip to Volcano National Park. All listed information proved true. Not fancy but serviceable - would recommend. :)
It was great staying at this property. It was clean, tidy and close to the attractions, on a very quiet street.
We enjoyed our stay very much--the apartment was very large and kitchen was well-stocked!
I can't rate this very high because although the place was clean, it was very "musty" smelling and one of our adult kids had an allergic reaction to something in the house. Now, with that being said, maybe because of the location and the environment, a lot of the homes may be kind of moldy smelling, but I do want to caution folks that might have allergies, etc. I wouldn't have stayed more than one night. The owner was very thoughtful and quick in my email questions and I hate leaving anything negative but do feel a need to be honest.
