About John F. Moore

Our family has been in Prince Edward County since 1977, originally from Toronto. My mother fell in love with trees, the look of the property and how it leads to the water. My grandmother bought the property from the Cleave family, which owned the property from 1920 to 1988. The house has been through 5 renovations since the house was built in 1840. I took over the operation of the house in 2010 after my younger brother passed away at the age of 42 years. Bradley loved the house and lovingly designed it with families and groups of people in mind.

John F. Moore purchased this house in 1988

Why John F. Moore chose Ontario

Originally we rented the house for long term rentals. We saw that there was a need for quality accommodation at an affordable price. We originally had Westlake Marina from 1977 to 2011. The Highway House started operation in 2007.

What makes this house unique

People describe the Highway House as refreshing and inspiring. We call our piece of heaven and we enjoy sharing the property with our guests. In the last few years, the gem of Prince Edward County has been uncovered by hundreds of thousands of people. We are now blessed with having great eating establishments located only 2.5 kms to the west in the village of Wellington, Ontario. We have world class chefs creating wonderful meals at The Drake/Devonshire, The Pomodoro Trattoria & Wine Bar and the East & Main Bistro.

An OK place to stay

  • 4 of 5

We had a good time staying here for a weak. The house meet out needs and when the dishwasher was not working John was very responsive although it never ended up working. The bedrooms are comfortable, the BBQ worked well, and the kitchen is large enough to have several people working at the same time. John was very accommodating in allowing us to bring the dogs. This is a place that you can bring your large group to and be very comfortable.

Owner's Response: Yvonne was wonderful and the problem with the dishwasher (relatively new, 2012) has been fixed. Other than the dishwasher, Yvonne and company were great guests.

Charming historic house in the County!

  • 5 of 5

John's house was the perfect place for our family getaway in the County!

There were plenty of bedrooms to accommodate our diverse needs for a family of two couples, one grandma and two babies.

And we loved making our own breakfast in the fully equipped kitchen with a nice view of the rear garden at the dining table.

John is a wonderful and accommodating host who lovingly takes care of this abode. Would definitely come here again and recommend it to others!

Great home for family gathering

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 stayed for a weekend to attend a wedding at Fields of West Lake just down the road. It was the perfect place for three couples -- comfortable beds, lots of room to gather, good size kitchen, and bright and open living area. Had the weather been better I am sure we would have enjoyed the outdoor spaces as well. The whole area is charming.

Very well kept, airy and roomy!

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay! John the owner, was very nice and a accomodating. I particularly liked his art and photos on the walls.

We enjoyed the little town of Wellington, Picton, and the Sandbanks Provincial Park. Also had a great time checking out the wineries, glass blowing studio, and did some blueberry picking too...all of which were within a short drive from the house.

Old Elegant House

  • 4 of 5

We went to Prince Edward County for a family wedding. This large renovated old house slept our family of nine. It had many large windows with views of old trees, green grass and in the distance, the lake.

Because there was lots of room, the day after the wedding we hosted an inpromtu lunch for 37. The kitchen, dining room and living room were large and lent thremselves well to this event.

The kitchen was well equiped so we ended up cooking and eating most of our meals at the house. It was fun planning our meals together and having a kitchen that was big enough for 3 or 4 cooks.

We found something to do every day for all ages in group: the cheese factory, a glass blower, the wineries, the ferry boat crossings. The owner gave us a park pass for the Sand Banks Provincial Part. There is a small beach in Wellington, and we checked out some of the many little shops.

Upper Canada Village and Fort Henry at Kingston were close enough for day trips.

The other side of the house is a separate rental. It was great having other extended family members so close.

I would recommend this property to anyone planning a stay in Prince Edward county. The owner was very helpful and obliging. This is a beautiful area to explore or just relax and enjoy.

A Great Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We really loved our stay. The house had character but it had modern touches, great beds, very comfortable and staying there was very affordable. John didn't mind that we had two extra guests.

A Great Getaway, I would highly recommend it to my friends and family.
