Casa Astrid, located on the beach in Cabuya, a quaint village nestled between Montezuma & Mal Pais at the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, is within walking distance of 5 restaurants, 1 Internet cafe & 2 grocery stores.
The open air cathedral ceilings ensure wonderful light & ventilation. The french doors which span the back of the house allow you to enjoy the sounds & sights of the ocean from inside. The spacious covered deck is ideal for dining or relaxing in a hammock or lounge chair. Monkeys, birds & butterflies frequent the shaded garden. Two bedrooms, one with a double bunk bed, & a built in couch provide sleeping space for up to 6 guests.
Bring your lap top to hook into our high speed Internet connection & fiber optic phone line. Enjoy the cool quiet of our external AC units in both bedrooms.
The house is within a short walk of jungle/river/waterfall hikes, snorkeling & Cabuya Island. The sea at the house is safe for kids. Montezuma is a 7km/1 hour walk along the beach.
IMPORTANT NOTE ON OPEN AIR TROPICAL HOUSES: An open air house house allows the ocean breeze as well as critters like geckos, insects and the occasional hermit crab in. Make sure to put all food away, keep your garbage covered and counters spotless or the ants will be happy to clean up for you! Please note that the air conditioning is restricted to the two bedrooms and is intended to be used with the bedroom doors closed.

Take a two hour hike via the high road over the Cabo Blanco reserve enjoying the amazing views and take a dip at the beaches of Mal Pais.
THINGS TO DO: TAKE A SWIM: Swim in the lovely warm safe water right in front of the house at high tide. There are no currents or big waves to worry about. Make sure to bring water shoes as the bottom is rocky.
At low tide wade in the tide pools. Find an amazing assortment of shells, stones and sea creatures.

Do you have kids? For $100/week we can set up our above ground pool for you. Relax and watch the kids have fun.
THINGS TO DO: TAKE IT EASY: Swing in a hammock and let the wildlife come to you. Monkeys, birds, iguanas, butterflies and geckos are regular visitors in the back yard.
Take your book and beach chair to the shady water's edge and enjoy the sound of the waves and the tropical breeze.
Build a sand castle and go beach combing with the kids. The beach changes regularly with the tide. You will be amazed at the treasures that you will find.
Take a stroll past the second supermarket and follow the signs to the Rainsong Wildlife Sanctuary where Mary will introduce you to all the fascinating local wildlife.
Watch the moon rise over the ocean and see the splendid night sky unfold before your eyes right in front of the house.
We enjoyed a wonderful week in this beachfront house! The location is great, right on the beach, and amenities in the town are within walking distance. The house was well equipped and spacious, our favourite part being the outdoor shower (for a quick rinse after coming in from the beach).
The drive from the airport to Cabuya around the Gulf of Nicoya is strenuous (some steep and unpaved roads). Check the ferry schedule from Puntarenas to Paquera to avoid the rough sections, or consider taking a domestic flight. Or just be prepared for several bumpy hours.
What to do:
Swimming (high tide) and reading on the patio (low tide) are easy and obvious options. We also walked to the island (great for looking at the rock formations), checked the pools in the river, booked a snorkeling tour (beautiful tropical fish) and a canopy tour (including a beautiful waterfall swim), drove to Mal Pais (though found the high waves and pebbles a bit rough) and hiked through Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve (be prepared to sweat!).
The lady at the local cafe was very helpful "on-site" for finding our way around and the organisation.
We definitely recommend this place, as it provides both the seclusion and peacefulness, while still in relative proximity to tourism infrastructure.
By the way, we could watch monkey clamber through the trees during the day, and howling during the night. And in the morning a myriad of birds sing to greet you!
Cabuya is a very nice, quiet, secluded and tranquil part of Costa Rica.
The house is a bit rustic and is a little short on amenities. But the location is fantastic, right on the ocean and a very quiet location.
And though Cabuya is a very quiet place and out-of-the-way, it is in a very central spot to get to the rain forest, zip lines, diving, Montezuma, and Santa Teresa beaches.
The caretaker (Jenny) is fantastic, helpful and gets on top of things if you need any help. We had a couple of small issues and she was there within practically minutes to help get it resolved.
A couple of helpful hints: if driving you definitely need a 4 x 4, the roads are very bumpy with lots of potholes and getting around especially to Santa Teresa you will need a good vehicle. If you like adventure don't get the GPS with your car :-) The roads in Costa Rica especially in this area have little to no directional signage. Though you really can't get lost, it is a little cumbersome getting around until you know the roads and where everything is.
Overall for the location the price and the adventure the place was fantastic.
Casa Astrid is a perfect vacation getaway spot!
It's great for a couple, two couples or a family with kids. We have been here twice, once by ourselves and once with our adult children and our granddaughter. We have loved it both times.
We both love to cook and the house is very well equipped for making meals. The decor is as shown on the website, truly lovely and unique. What we especially love is that the front wall is made entirely of doors that open completely up for an amazing view of the ocean and also allow wonderful breezes to flow in.
The bedrooms have air conditioning that really work well! This too is good.
The Casa is nestled in the quiet fishing village of Cabuya, close to amenities but also quiet and secluded. The yard is well treed, therefore shady, and opens to a beautiful view of the ocean. Birds are aplenty and monkeys regularly use the tree highway to get across the property, mostly u but also capuchin.
If you don't want to cook there are a few smaller restaurants nearby as well as the Coyote Cafe run by the property manager, Jenny.( more on her later)
Cabuya is close to Montezuma, accessible by bus or car or bike. So if you want some hustle and bustle before returning to tranquility, that too is available.
The surfing beaches of Santa Teresa are 20 minutes away by car, with sandy beaches that go on forever. Kids love to do the boogie boarding there. Also, if interested, you can take surfing lessons. Those are a lot of fun to watch even if you don't partake.
The property manager Jenny is close by and always available. She will explain
Everything about the house on arrival and make sure everything is to your satisfaction
If you want to do anything or see anything, she is the go-to person. She can even arrange your shuttle from the airport- which we used- and consequently saved a lot of money by renting our car through her, locally. Jenny is also super friendly and runs a very good restaurant, already mentioned.
Tanya, the owner, is really friendly and open and easy to deal with and to contact. She cares about her property and maintains it very well, ensuring that you are satisfied with your holiday. (This has not always been the case in other places we have rented!)
We have no hesitation recommending Casa Astrid and would love to come back ourselves.
Beautiful property with an ocean view and a nice breeze. The house stays nice and cool with the big fans. Bedrooms have AC for sleeping at night as well. Cabuya is an authentic Costa Rican town with a laid back pace, perfect for relaxing. We really like the open air setup of the house so you can be in fresh air all day!
This was our 4th trip to the wonderful village of Cabuya and our first stay at Casa Astrid. We stayed there for a month and found the house to be absolutely perfect for the 2 of us. Four people would have been fine there as well as there are 2 separate bedrooms with a/c. In a beautiful spot like this, how much time do you spend in the house anyway! We had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. We love the quiet town, the warm water and the fact the beach feels as though it is our own most of the time. This was our first trip there without a car and we managed perfectly well on the local buses. We would like to thank Tanya for sharing her home with us and to thank Jenny and family for all the help (transportation to and from cabuya, bus schedules, fruit and vegetable orders, best pizzas and cookies as well as fixing anything that came up with the house, quickly and effectively) they provided us with once again. We love Cabuya for its quiet, peaceful and safe atmosphere, so pack up your water shoes and give it a chance to soothe your soul.
This is our second time renting this beautiful beach house. It is now considered our home away from home. Our first visit was November 2013 as a couple and this visit we brought along another couple. Both times the home was perfect!! the air conditioning is great in the bedrooms and we love the rest of the house being able to be opened up to the beach. Everything is clean and in perfect working condition. If we needed anything Jenny was always there to help out. Tanya is a pleasure to communicate with and Cabuya a quiet town to relax in.
We will definitely be returning to this awesome home.
Cabuya, the gateway to the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, is a small ocean side village which offers a wealth of natural sites to discover. Nestled along the jungle-fringed coast with a backdrop of mountains, Cabuya is great base for hiking, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, beach combing, wildlife watching and all those nature lovers looking for a place off the beaten track. It is also the ideal spot to simply unwind in a hammock and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you.
Cabuya boasts 5 restaurants, an Internet cafe, and two grocery stores which stock alcohol, produce, meat, fish and household items, all of which are within an easy walk from the house. It is also within an hours walk (7km) along the beach to Montezuma and a two and a half hour walk over a mountain to Mal Pais and the lovely playa Carmen. There is a regular bus service to Montezuma so while some visitors choose to rent a car it is certainly not essential.
