COCONUT HIDEAWAY is one of the most charming and unique homes on Little Gasparilla Island. This is our private home -- not a 'rental unit' -- and we have decorated it with antiques, oriental carpets, original artwork and many collections from our travels abroad. Our home is eclectic and rustic and has been enjoyed by our family for nearly three decades.
OLD FLORIDA STYLE RIGHT ON THE BEACH
Our Caribbean-inspired home is built in the 'Old Florida' style and boasts soaring high ceilings, gleaming hardwood floors, warm cedar walls, Tiffany-style lamps, a dramatic open staircase and unobstructed views of the beach from almost every room. We offer two screened porches, front and back, and open decks surround the house for sunning. Unlike many homes which are merely 'gulf view' or which require a long walk across the island on hot sand, our home is directly on the beach!
FREE CONCIERGE SERVICE TRANSPORTS LUGGAGE AND GROCERIES FOR YOU
Our island concierge will meet you at the dock upon your arrival and help transport
your groceries and bags to the house AND carry them up the stairs for you! This service is free to you and he will also help you take everything back to the dock upon departure.
CHARMING DECOR AND MANY UNEXPECTED EXTRAS
Comfortable handmade hammocks offer the perfect spot for reading. Al fresco dining is available on the front porch for balmy tropical evenings, or our indoor dining table seats 7-8. We have a breezy outdoor seating area on the front porch overlooking the Gulf, and a cozy conversation area on the back porch. We even have a tropical tiki hut nestled in the dunes, perfect for watching the sunset with a glass of wine...and a quiet tropical garden under the sea grapes, with orchids, frangipani, bamboo and ginger. The open-air outdoor shower is also a favorite of many of our guests, with steamy hot water on brisk winter evenings! We have a piano, a library, movies and even craft supplies! We also provide floats and rafts, noodles, snorkeling gear, fishing gear and we even have kayaks you can rent! We have spent over 25 years making Coconut Hideaway a very special and unique beach cottage to share with friends and family.
KING BEDS AND TWO LARGE BEDROOMS; (PLUS ONE SMALL BEDROOM)
Each of the two main bedrooms offers both a king-size bed and an additional small daybed perfect for small children. The cozy sleeping porch has a daybed with an additional trundle (two twins OR a king) and has its own private entrance. (Teenagers love the privacy! Please note, however, this is a very small room, especially with the trundle pulled out.) We also offer a sofabed in the living room and we have an inflatable aerobed for additional flexibility. We feature 100% cotton linens and a variety of pillows and plenty of blankets and quilts for the winter months.
COUNTRY KITCHEN WITH FULLY STOCKED PANTRY
The kitchen features granite counter tops, bread maker, blender, Keurig coffee machine along with drip coffeemaker, microwave, toaster oven, coffee grinder and crock pot. Two refrigerators offer plenty of space for extra ice, sodas and snacks. We also offer access to our fully stocked pantry, so you don't have to bring as many groceries….and if you don’t feel like leaving the island, you can almost always put together an impromptu meal from our pantry! From canned goods and spices to rice and drink mixes, we keep our pantry stocked with a variety of food items just in case you don't feel like heading to the mainland.
Coconut Hideaway is pet-friendly with some basic restrictions….we request that pets be on monthly flea control. We have oriental carpets so housebroken pets are required. And aggressive dogs must be kept on leash at all times. Yards on the island are not fenced so you must keep your pet under control.
PEACEFUL ISLAND AMBIANCE
As part of the barrier island chain that includes Sanibel and Captiva Island, Little Gasparilla Island offers the peace and serenity that those overcrowded islands cannot. As a bridge-less barrier island, accessible only by water taxi, Little Gasparilla Island has fewer tourists, no high rises and no crowds on the beach. You vacation with dolphins and egrets, gopher tortoises and sea turtles. Unlike the congested 'condo/townhome' complexes to the south, the beach in front of Coconut Hideaway is rarely crowded.
The fishing is superb from the beach or the dock, and children and adults alike will also enjoy shelling, snorkeling, riding skim boards or simply floating on a raft. Noisy nightlife is non-existent, though you may encounter ghost crabs or giant sea turtles on the beach. There is daily water taxi service to and from the island, so mainland visits are relatively convenient. Contact Emmett at Pirate's Water Taxi for transportation to and from the island: 941-697-5777.
There are several golf courses within 10 minutes of the marina, and an excellent fish market (Miss Cindy's) just across Placida Bay. There are charming gift and souvenir shops in the villages of Placida and Boca Grande.
Please note that most houses on Little Gasparilla island are on stilts. Unfortunately, we are not handicap-accessible. We provide baby gates for stairs inside the home but small children will require supervision on the stairs.
• You must notify us if you wish to bring or rent a boat. New regulations enacted by the state of Florida limit boats to 21 ft. at our dock.
• Please note there is no smoking in the beach house.
• Please note that some of our reservations are tentative until our first installment is received and tentative reservations do NOT show up on the calendar..…so please e-mail us to double-check availability BEFORE BOOKING ON-LINE to avoid disappointment. (And you may also contact us to be placed on a cancellation list. We often have cancellations, so even if your desired date is booked, that can sometimes change!) We apologize for any inconvenience if your preferred date is already booked.
We think you will find your vacation on Little Gasparilla Island to be one of the most relaxing and enjoyable holidays ever! And, at Coconut Hideaway, we try to make it as easy as possible to have a stress-free vacation.

Buddy was a motion picture director in LA -- but originally from Florida -- and Laurie was a marketing executive in Chicago. We moved back to Florida in 1985 when we finished Coconut Hideaway! When we retired, we became antique dealers and traveled the world collecting unique and eclectic mementos for our beach house. The house is filled with antiques and artwork and things we love. Now we enjoy sharing this very special island with our friends, family and guests!
Little Gasparilla Vacation Rentals purchased this house in 1980
As a native Floridian, I found Little Gasparilla Island most closely resembled the Florida I grew up in years ago.....no high-rises on the beach, no traffic-clogged roads and few tourists. Many days you can walk on the beach without seeing another soul....we also love the natural environment, the beautiful clean beaches and the lack of unsightly seawalls. We love being able to bring our dogs to the beach with us and watching them enjoy the water as much as we do. Island neighbors are friendly and welcoming and always willing to help out! Little Gasparilla is a mystical island for us and we never tire of spending time here with family and friends.
Buddy's parents met in a beach house on Indian Rocks Beach back in the 1920s. Coconut Hideaway represents our attempt to create that classic Old-Florida beach environment. It was designed and built by us based on the things we love to live with....antique cupboards rather than typical kitchen cupboards, antique light fixtures, hardwood floors, high ceilings, lots of ceiling fans and large, open rooms. (It is far from new and modern!) Our home is warm and comfortable and totally unique, fully stocked with virtually everything you need for a fun family vacation...including sunscreen, bug spray, beach umbrella, boogie boards and rafts. Our palm-thatched tiki hut offers a sheltered spot when winter's breezes are a bit chilly and a cool respite from the midday sun. The home is spacious enough for a large family, but cozy and romantic for a couple. Our colorful handmade hammocks from Central America allow you to fully enjoy the tropical breezes and -- best of all -- we have spectacular views of the Gulf from nearly every room in the house. You can listen to the waves every night when your head hits the pillow! Extras include wireless internet access, a piano, a library, a large HDTV with satellite and TIVO, access to our fully stocked pantry, movies and CD's and lots of beach toys. We have central air conditioning for those still summer nights, but we often prefer to turn off the AC, open the doors and let the balmy tropical breezes flow through the house! When we feel those breezes, we know that we are truly in heaven.
I am a prop and set stylist and live in NYC. Above all, the architecture and interior of anywhere I vacation is vital. I spend jillions of hours obsessively checking photographs of places I intend to stay. The Gaines home is an example of what happens to a vacation rental when people with impeccable taste, sensitivity to the tiniest details and impressive creativity create a space. On my vacation in May, I wanted to do absolutely nothing, so I needed a house that was as satisfying to be in as the beach was satisfying to be on. I intended to stay in. My husband and I ended up logging more hours in the house than on the rest of the island. If you're looking to be in the middle of a Coastal Living editorial, this is the right place. The island itself is a given -- sugar sand, clear seagreen water, relentless brilliant sun -- but this place is ALL about the house. Wide plank wood floors, an amazing rug collection, farmhouse case pieces, enamelware, woven hammocks, salvaged doors, victorian hardware everywhere and all of it really cleverly and carefully curated -- like the enamelware collection on the kitchen wall -- all of it in the colors of the sea out back. Smart, smart, smart! All of the time I didn't spend sleeping, swimming, taking outdoor showers and cooking in a kitchen I didn't want to leave, I spent being jealous of all of the perfect objects in this perfect beachouse. And the Gainses are seriously gracious hosts. Once you're there, anything you need, you'll get. Great job!
What's not to love? It's on the ocean, an old Florida beach home, roomy, big 'ol screened porch for happy hours and sunsets and tons of shells to collect.
My wife, myself and our Golden Retriever were at Coconut Hideaway from August 14-21. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time and will be making plans to come back next year. Having been in real estate and property management in South Florida for over 40 years, we were very impressed by the level of detail provided for everything you could possibly need-groceries, boat rentals, local sites, things to do, etc. Coconut Hideaway is different from most rentals in that it has a warm home-like feel rather than the sterile vanilla decor that is typical. It actually feels like you're home on your own private beach. This time of year there were few people on the beach and those we met were very friendly and welcoming. The patio was excellent for reading, relaxing and watching the magnificent sunsets. Many times we saw dolphins swimming by and pelicans diving for their meals. A perfect getaway that we would highly recommend.
Better than pictured, with beautiful antiques and decor. Fully functioning kitchen with every tool one needs for great home cooked meals. Clean and well maintained, with modern conveniences, within yards from beach access, feels like you are on your private island as there were few people at certain times within viewing distance. Relaxing with a book out on the covered porch with the sound of the surf and breeze from the ceiling fans made for peaceful afternoons. Early morning walks on the beach and collecting shells was a great way to start every day. The house is in the one of the best locations on the island, with the great views at any time of the day. This was our second trip to LGI and this property, we will definitely be coming back again.
We loved our nine day vacation at Laurie and Buddy's beach HOME. Tracey, Laurie, and Buddy were very prompt and helpful for our every question or need. Every detail was thought of. Pantry and Kichen was stocked with anything you might forget to bring along. Highlights were for us the shower, the front porch, wildlife sightings, walking the beach, and watching our dog have a great time. It is a bit tricky to get to and from the island...we decided it was worth it. The home decor was filled with cool antiques and fun things to look at. Very non generic and quite cozy. We rented a boat for part of our time and that was fun to take exploring and eating cheeseburgers with our friends to other islands. We cooked allot and laughed allot. The beach, water, weather and sunsets were outstanding. We also rented a golf cart and that was nice to have. The tv was nice to have late in the evening. This place is perfect for non handicapped adults. We had a blast. A Little slice of heaven. Thanks for sharing! Kris and Don
We rented the place at the last minute and had a great time. It was easy to get to and the water taxi people were easy to work with. The house itself was very comfortable and all the appliances worked well. We were very pleased with our stay.
Little Gasparilla Island is located just off the coast of SW Florida...just north of Sanibel and Captiva. There are several golf courses on the mainland, kayak and jet ski rentals nearby and charming Boca Grande and Old Englewood nearby with shops and galleries and fine dining. Please note the island has NO BRIDGE...you can only get there by boat or water taxi....you cannot drive your car to the island! It's an adventure to get here!
