December 29 update:

Hurray!!! Palmas has power!!!! Yay!!! Finally!!!

And we have secured our first rental in...well, four months, a power crew from the many US utility companies who are helping Puerto Rico electrify has booked the property thru the middle of March, so....we're back in business!

Palmas continues to recover well with most of the foliage coming back and all debris basically gone. Rebuilding and restoration of the affected properties continues, of course, hampered by the incredible draws on raw materials and capabilities on the island. For instance, the company that installed our hurricane-proof windows some six years ago has a six-month backlog of work, so of course, rebuilding will be slow.

The Crescent Cove pool is fully operational, it became the first pool back in service after Maria with all equipment and filters replaced and running on a genset until the power came back early last week.

There is lots of work ongoing to slowly replace the beach sand eroded away by the battering waves, and while nowhere near where it was before Maria, the beach is completely usable.

Once again, thanks to the many previous guests who sent us 'care notes' and hope to see many of you back again soon!

November 11 update:

Pictures from friends and our HOA's president show remarkable progress throughout Palmas and Crescent Cove....all debris gone, half-felled trees mostly either stood up again or gone if not recoverable and the beach is....alas, lovely as this is the time of year where the ocean on the southeast coast generally gets much calmer than during summer.

But, still no power and as you have I'm sure read from news Stateside, the Power Authority has many challenges facing it. The pool is down for the count until a new filtration system is installed as a tree took the previous system out as it fell; a new system has been purchased and will be installed when the power returns.

Across Puerto Rico, progress is slow but in many areas, some level of normalcy is returning.

I'll update again when the power returns....

October 29 update:

We have water, but no power yet. Cleanup of the Palmas Del Mar grounds is pretty much complete and believe it or not, we have one working golf course! Yeah!! Progress -even if the Pro Shop is running on back-up generators.

Palmas began the rebuilding of the Beach Bohío, that famous (infamous, too, as many of us at some point may have lost our.....ahhh....decorum there) landmark of the mojito and beach-side burger.

With regards to our surroundings, the large shopping mall to our East which housed the Walmart is still shuttered completely....every store is still closed. The Ryder hospital in Humacao is running on emergency gensets, but fully fueled and running.

Another update to follow soon, regards

October 19 Update:

As most of you readers know, Palmas Del Mar and Puerto Rico were pretty much devastated by Hurricane Maria -and our hearts go out to those not as fortunate as we were. Palmas Del Mar was hit pretty hard as we were in the northeastern quadrant of the eyewall -the worst part of the storm -as it made landfall in Yabucoa, a few miles west of Palmas.

No one in the Palmas Del Mar family we know of was hurt, and the Palmas crews have done an amazing job or cleaning things up, but there's much, much damage. The Beach Club was completely lost, as was the Beach Bohío -that landmark of Palmas where many of us enjoyed probably way too many mojitos (guilty as charged!) The Pterocarpus forest suffered greatly with many of the paths and walkways taken out.

Crescent Cove lost some 30 villas to the and doors blown in by the wind. We were very fortunate in that when replaced the windows and doors some six years ago we installed safety glass windows, so they all survived....the sliding door leading from the living room to the terrace splintered and the aluminum frame was warped -but it did not shatter as it happened in 29 other villas..

As of this writing Palmas has running water and we expect to be on the grid (power) in some two to three weeks, so recovery will be faster than the rest of our poor, shattered island.

We sincerely appreciate the many emails and texts from prior guests who wrote us asking about how we and Palmas faired -Godbless you all for thinking of us and of Puerto Rico.

Updates to follow every two weeks and the old text description to our property follows.

Prices recently reduced on this exquisitely decorated, 2013 sq. ft., beachfront villa in the Crescent Cove complex in Palmas Del Mar, 200 yards from 2 miles of unspoiled, impeccably-maintained beaches.

Ensuite bathrooms in every bedroom provide for your and your traveling companions' privacy and convenience. With thousands of dollars in locally made, artisan-crafted rattan furniture, many original oils, giclées and serigraphs on the walls and maintained to a very high standard, this villa really is a second home, and our many guest reviews attest to that. Indeed, the two largest property management firms in Palmas consider our villa the best rental property in Crescent Cove.

Located on Puerto Rico's southeast shore (about an hour's drive from San Juan) Palmas del Mar is a sprawling resort consisting of some 2,750 acres on more than two miles of palm tree-lined beach. Set on a former sugarcane plantation, the resort is located on the Caribbean Sea, with the Island of Vieques to the east.

Palmas Del Mar is both a vacation resort and a sophisticated limited access residential community with many different home developments throughout. Of the many developments within Palmas Del Mar, just just two developments -Crescent Beach and Crescent Cove - are truly and completely (every unit) beachfront.

Speaking of Crescent Cove, our regime was just the second 'villa or apartment' complex to be developed in Palmas and thus, it was situated in the best section of Palmas' almost two miles of beaches, partially protected from the prevailing easterly trade winds by Candelero Point. Between October and late March and as the prevailing winds are more northerly, our beach is usually calm, becoming a bit more 'sporty as the more normal Easterly trades start prevailing in late spring and summer. Because the beach is also semi-protected by a small reef just outside Candelero Point, there will be many days of the late Spring-to-Fall season where the beach just in front of Crescent Beach and Crescent Cove is the only swimmable area of the 2 miles of beaches inside Palmas Del Mar. And of course, beach lounges are available from the Crescent Cove staff for your comfort while beachside.

The villa's southeast exposure allows its penthouse terrace to be in shadow from mid-afternoon on, making it a lovely place to enjoy the stunning views of the courtyard, pool and beach area. That same southeast exposure provides a wonderful, natural breeze through the property that allows many to just shut off the A/C's, open the windows and sleep with the soft sound of the surf in the background....

Palmas Del Mar is located 50 minutes from San Juan making a day drive to San Juan a breeze. Palmas is also one hour from El Yunque -the Caribbean National (rain) Forest and Las Croabas where you can enjoy all sorts of day sails/outings to the many cays that dot the east coast of the island and the Cabezas de San Juan Bio-Bay.

In short, Palmas perfectly situated for you to enjoy almost all of what Puerto Rico has to offer without the mad hustle and bustle of San Juan proper. If you are looking to enjoy a relaxing resort atmosphere within one hour of Old San Juan and two hours from almost all the many attractions that Puerto Rico has to offer, Palmas will be as good as it gets.

If you are looking for fabulous golf, Palmas' two golf courses are considered among the finest in Puerto Rico. The old course - the Palm Course - was designed by Gary Player in the late Eighties and was updated in 2002. The front nine and back nine are totally different with the front nine being narrow & very technical -mostly an iron course- but with the back nine huge, wide open and long, with many elevation changes. Some holes have truly spectacular views of the beach and coastline with greens and tees 150 feet up from the beach.

The new course - Flamboyán - was designed by Rees Jones and finished in 2001. It is generally a long, difficult, wide open course with several long Par 4s and Par 5's that play directly into the teeth of what is usually a 15-20 mph breeze. I jokingly call #7 - a 540yard, slightly uphill Par 5 that plays directly into that wind- the only Par 6 in Puerto Rico. Trust me....make a bogey there and you will be very happy. ;o)

Besides fabulous golf, Palmas Del Mar has several miles of golf cart trails and walking paths, an equestrian center, 22 tennis courts and a fully-equiped fitness center.

Renting through us and our on-site property manager, you will be able to enjoy Palmas' athletic and leisure facilities at 'guest of member' rates, typically 20% off listed prices.

The villa's bedrooms will sleep six and we can accommodate a 7th guest with roll-aways that can be placed in any room. With each bedroom's en-suite, you and your traveling companions will have privacy when desired and enjoy the villa's spacious common areas when mingling.

About Jose and Elena Galindez

Gaby, Elena and I lived in Puerto Rico until 2001 when worked forced us to relocate Stateside, where we live the Pacific Northwest.

Jose and Elena Galindez purchased this villa in 2006

Why Jose and Elena Galindez chose Candelero Abajo

Elena and I fell in love with Palmas way back in 1980 shortly after we first met and longed to live there while we worked and lived in Puerto Rico. We bought our first property in Palmas in 1997 and lived there until we relocated to the US in 2001.

The love of Palmas and Puerto Rico moved us to buy this property in 2006 and we have it to be our second home when we can retire and split our time between Palmas and Oregon

What makes this villa unique

Crescent Cove is one of just two truly beachfront regimes in Palmas -Crescent Beach being the other. Crescent Cove is smaller and more intimate then Crescent Beach and appeals to us for its smaller, more laid back atmosphere. The layout of the Crescent Cove villas is different: multiple levels versus a more traditional flat, single-level floor plan which gives everyone more privacy should one want that while one is staying there.

The beach area just in front of Crescent Cove and its contiguous complex Crescent Beach just to the east is the best section of beach in Palmas Del Mar, protected from the most of the prevailing swells by a natural reef a quarter-mile East of the complexes. This reef is visible in the Google Map views I describe below. The villa has all the beach towels you will need and the Crescent Cove regime provides beach chairs/lounges for the complex's guests. Mid-stay maid/cleaning services are available. To see the villa's location, access Google Maps and search for Palmas Del Mar, Candelero, Puerto Rico. Switch to satellite view and tab the map right (east) and up (north) until the two U-shaped complexes come into view. Crescent Cove is the one with the pool closest to the ocean and our villa is in the 10th building on the left (southwest) leg of the U. The complex's Four Seasons Hotel and Casino is 300 yards from the villa -an easy 5 minute stroll.

Jose is the best!

  • 5 of 5

We were supposed to stay in Jose's beautiful villa over Christmas, but given the uncertainty of whether or not there would be electricity, we had to cancel our plans. Jose was very accommodating and gracious about our cancellation and returned our deposit promptly. In fact, from the moment I made the reservation, he was quick to respond to any questions and/or concerns we had, and I am so sad that we have to postpone our visit. I know he and his family have been through a lot after Hurricane Maria, and I wish them nothing but the best. Once PR is back on its feet, I will definitely be booking Jose's villa again -- can't wait to see it!

Perfect Spot, Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

My family and friends have been coming to Palmas del Mar since the 80’s – We’ve rented villas all over Palmas, this was our first stay at Crescent Cove. #34 was perfect, well maintained and stocked with everything we needed. This trip was 3 adult women; very nice each having our own bedroom with ensuite.

The complex itself is safe, impeccably groomed, private pool area and best of all steps from our favorite beach in the Caribbean, the reason we’ve been coming back all these years. Another plus staying at Crescent Cove is “Beach Chairs” a very hot commodity in Palmas since very few villas include them. The only reason we rented golf carts in the past was to lug around rented beach chairs.

The biggest plus at #34 is Jose, the owner, who was involved with our stay from the beginning. He provides his” FAQ sheet” which included everything from directions to recommendations and tips on how to get around. He called us when we arrived to make sure we were settled.

We took day trips to the Rainforest, Caves (fantastic) and Arecibo Observation Tower. We also saw the Patriots win the Super Bowl at a party in Tennis Village. (Had to get that in)

Muchas gracias Jose, see you next year.

Relaxing Winter Get-Away

  • 5 of 5

My family of four adults spent six nights at villa #34. We could not have been more happy with the Palmas Del Mar community and the villa. The entire area is beautifully maintained and safe. The community is laid back and quiet. The villa was very clean and the view from the balconies looked out onto the pool and ocean beyond. The villa is not on ground level. There is a flight of stairs to enter it. The beach and pool area were never crowded. We rented a golf cart for three days. Liked being able to motor around Palmas and not have to worry about parking a car.

We took day trips to the Rainforest, Old San Juan, and the Bacardi rum factory. Also took the bio-bay tour. Highly recommend eating at Pura Vida in the Palmanova Plaza. We had red snapper, jambalaya, lamb chops and plantain-crusted chicken. All excellent including the service.

The one thing that sets this villa apart from other places we have rented is Jose, the owner. The information he provided beforehand and his availability to answer all of our questions, made for one of our best vacations. He is a great ambassador for the Island. We highly recommend this villa.

Vacation Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Jose's and Elena's villa is wonderful, and they are remarkably great hosts. For example, leading up to our week-long vacation (12/26/16-1/2/17) this year, I emailed Jose and asked if there was a grill at the villa. Jose's response was, "no, but we'll get one." And they did. That story exemplifies just how far Jose and Elena were willing to go to make their guests -- who they'd never before met -- comfortable. The property itself is great. The round pool -- which is steps from the Villa -- is terrific. My kids -- aged 8, 6 and 3 -- really loved the nearby "beach club", which is really a mini-water park. The beach by the condo is great, although the water that week was a little rough for kids under 10. The eating options are also very good by Caribbean standards: We particularly enjoyed eating at C Bar and the Mexican place. All in all, I'd rate this villa and this property and, indeed, this vacation 6 stars rather than 5 if another star were available!

Fantastic! Perfect for families!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time during spring break at this villa in Palmas!!!! Loved it!

The home had everything we needed and more! This was our first time visiting PR, and Jose was such a great host--providing excellent communication and helpful hints on traveling and visiting PR! Surfside Realty was superb--so easy to pick-up keys and check-out, they even had boogie boards to rent for cheap! Everything was stress-free!!!

My kids had a blast cruising around Palmas in the golf carts--I do recommend renting one, at least for a few days! The swimming and beach were great and it was a plus that the beach cafe was a short walk away to grab a pina colada on the beach! Everything was a short drive--we did a snorkeling excursion to one of the islands, a kayaking trip to the Bio Bay, visit to Old San Juan, and a hike in the rainforest. I loved that the community was gated and felt so safe--I had no concerns having my teens explore the grounds on their own since it was so safe!

We had a terrific time at the villa and look forward to coming again next summer!!!! Highly recommend staying here!!!

Palmas Del Mar is Puerto Rico's fastest-growing, resort/residential community with over 3000 full-time residents and a thriving vacation ambiance. The property encompasses 2700 acres with 600 acres designated as wildlife preserve areas and has miles of walking, jogging and golf cart paths. Palmas Del Mar's beaches extend for over two miles and the best section of its beach is right in front of our complex and its sister Crescent Beach complex.

Palmas is 50 minutes from the fabulous shopping and 500 years of history of Old San Juan and one hour from El Yunque -the local Taíno name for the Caribbean National Rain Forest.

Several boat charters operate from the Palmas Marina offering half and full-day sails to Monkey Island and Vieques and Culebra -the Spanish Virgin Islands. Between November and April, our wahoo (ono) run compares to that in the Bahamas, with fish available 2 miles offshore. Palmas hosts 2 championship golf courses designed by Rees Jones and Gary Player, a casino, equestrian center, SCUBA charters, a dozen restaurants and 22 tennis courts all within the resort's grounds.
