All creatures in the Nature Center Auxiliary Opglabbeek
This center was founded in 1976 and has since grown into the largest shelter for sick and injured animals in the Benelux. Every year here thousands of injured wildlife rescue. The most diverse species you can find in the Nature Center Auxiliary, from squirrels to deer and monkeys to snakes. All animals stay here only temporarily and do until they have recovered. They are in fact returned to the wild or returned to their country of origin.
Opglabbeek is centrally located on the cycle of the Regional Landscape Kempen and Maasland and therefore an ideal base for a trip by bicycle.
Walking explore Opglabbeek
In the north of the town stretches a unique landscape of inland dunes and marshes: the Duinengordel.
Rider Pits and Turfven are the most beautiful marshes of Opglabbeek. The subsoil still consists of an impermeable layer of peat. The Gruitroderbos consists mostly forested land dunes.
Country dunes are formed when north winds large amounts of coarse sand meevoerden on the bare plains. In the first half of the 20th century were these dunes planted with conifers but some dune tops retained their typical heath and dune vegetation.
The Oudsberg is the highest dune land of the Kempen Plateau.
