Why Susan Heitkamp (owner) chose Southwest Michigan

Michigan holds a special place in the hearts of my family. My great-grandmother grew up in Michigan and we've spent many summers camping throughout the state. We came across this area in 2006 and knew immediately this was where our cottage should be. We're delighted to be able to share it with others who know how special western Michigan really is.

What makes this cottage unique

Once we decided to buy in this area, we looked at dozens of properties. But when I looked down the sandy lane that leads to the Owls' Nest, I knew this was our cottage. More than anything, this wooded setting so near Lake Michigan, was the deciding factor!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Such a wonderful long weekend. The weather was great. The fireplace was so welcoming at night.

Families are held together by special memories - the "Owls' Nest" will always be one of our families treasured memories.

Skipping stones on the beach, studying the moon through our sons telescope, hard fought games of beanbags in the driveway, my first bike ride in 20 years, countless card games on the magical porch.

Thank you for all of these -

The Scotts

PS the WiFi enabled our son who is studying for the US Medical Licensing Exam to join us! Thank you so much!!

More to do than a week allows! Needless to say, the beach and Lake Michigan are the big draws but there's so much more! Orchards, boutique shops, fine dining, hiking, canoeing, fishing, live performances...and then there's the peace and quiet of the woods. Check our reviews and you'll find that everyone gravitates to the screened porch. It's a great place for coffee in the morning, a book (read 'nap') in the afternoon or a glass of wine at dusk. You'll find really great restaurants that focus on fresh, local produce supplied by many of the area's organic farmers/producers. Vineyards and fruit plantations provide the opportunity to pick your own or purchase a peck! Not fancy or showy, but homey & cozy. The Owls' Nest is truly our home away from home and we hope you're as comfortable there as we are - enjoy!

Only five miles from Saugatuck/Douglas, the 'Arts Coast of the Midwest' and designated a 2009 Distinctive Destination in the United States by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Dozens of art galleries and studios; one of the top ten annual film festivals in the US; live theater and music options abound; wide variety of bars, restaurants and clubs; and home to Oval Beach. Recently rated 'Best Beach in the Midwest' by the Chicago Tribune; 'one of the 25 best shorelines in the world' by Conde Nast's Traveler; and 'one of the top five beaches in the US' by MTV.

Golf: You'll find a number of golf courses throughout the area. Brochures are available in our guidebook at the cottage or online.

Beautiful place!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our visit at the Owl's Nest. So peaceful and a nice place to get away from it all. We explored the area and loved how close we were to Lake Michigan. We were celebrating our 32nd anniversary and couldn't have been more romantic and special. It was easy to work with the owner, Susan. The cottage had so many nice touches. The bed was so comfortable. We slept til 830 everyday which is not like us! We were so relaxed, we didn't want to leave. Hope to go back someday. The Owl''s Nest doesn't disappoint nor does the area!

The beach vacation that wasn't

  • 2 of 5

The cottage is roomy and well maintained but the photos are out of date. The beach and cottage exterior look nothing like the photos on the listing.

The public beach is completely eroded. The closest beach is in Saugatuck. So if you're looking for leisurely walks on a sandy beach at dawn and dusk, this is not the spot for you. Susan left a note on the refrigerator about the beach situation but we would have preferred she had told us in advance. If we had wanted to drive 20 minutes to the beach, we could have stayed anywhere.

The exterior shot doesn't represent how dark it is. The cottage is overgrown and surrounded by dense woods. It's very dark inside the cottage all day long which can be depressing. The screen porch is lovely but it would be nicer with a little sunlight.

We saved up all year for our one week on Lake Michigan and we were greatly disappointed.

Owner's Response: While Lake Michigan's eastern shoreline in this area has experienced some erosion this season and the beach is not as deep as in previous years, the beach has been open and accessible all summer. This was reconfirmed by the Allegan County Parks Department when we received your request for a refund following your week at the cottage. We very specifically identify the cottage as being located in the woods - that's part of its appeal to us and most guests as the setting provides a cool and tranquil retreat. The scenery is constantly changing with the seasons and it's simply not realistic to post exact conditions on a weekly basis. We're glad you enjoyed your stay in the area, and to have the opportunity to share what life on Lake Michigan is like.

Cozy, quaint and private!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 7 throughly enjoyed our vacation to this area of Lake Michigan. The home was great and the location allowed us to enjoy both Sourh Haven and Saugatuck.

A Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Owl's Nest was everything we expected and more. The cabin is located off a quiet road not far from a nice little park with beach access. Due to erosion, this beach does not have much shoreline, but you could still enjoy the view of the lake. This location was perfect for day trips to South Haven, Saugatuck, and Holland which were not more than 30 minutes away in different directions. The cabin is very nicely decorated and had everything we needed for our stay. We, like many other guest, especially enjoyed the sun room. We spent a good amount of our time there enjoying the quiet and view of the woods. Susan was easy to work with as well. We would definitely recommend this cabin without hesitation.

RELAXING HIDE AWAY

  • 4 of 5

Our family had a wonderful week relaxing, talking, and sharing in these very comfortable surroundings! We were easily able to get out to the beaches, dining, hiking, and shopping but really looked forward to coming "home" and relaxing on the screened in porch. Big kitchen, plenty of seating, comfortable beds. Hope to be back!
