Why Susan Heitkamp (owner) chose Fennville

Michigan holds a special place in the hearts of my family. My great-grandmother grew up in Michigan and we've spent many summers camping throughout the state. We came across this area in 2006 and knew immediately this was where our cottage should be. We're delighted to be able to share it with others who know how special western Michigan really is.

What makes this cottage unique

Once we decided to buy in this area, we looked at dozens of properties. But when I looked down the sandy lane that leads to the Owls' Nest, I knew this was our cottage. More than anything, this wooded setting so near Lake Michigan, was the deciding factor!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Such a wonderful long weekend. The weather was great. The fireplace was so welcoming at night.

Families are held together by special memories - the "Owls' Nest" will always be one of our families treasured memories.

Skipping stones on the beach, studying the moon through our sons telescope, hard fought games of beanbags in the driveway, my first bike ride in 20 years, countless card games on the magical porch.

Thank you for all of these -

The Scotts

PS the WiFi enabled our son who is studying for the US Medical Licensing Exam to join us! Thank you so much!!

Our 9th year at the Owl's Nest

  • 5 of 5

Owl's Nest is our Michigan home! We love being surrounded by only the sounds of nature. It feels like the home just snuggles around you. It is our week of shutting out the world and recharging our batteries. We walk the beach just across the street and through the park at least 4 times a day. This year I found a lot of beach glass and will have a necklace made with one of the pieces. We are regulars at Crane's, love the Italian food at Maria's in South Haven, enjoy a long drive through the beautiful scenery to have cherry pie at the Cherry Hut (which has been in business for 95 years) and pick up a unique winter accessory at Baabaazuzu which is just 45 minutes north of the Cherry Hut, stroll through Saugatuck and then return for a quiet evening on the screened porch at the Owl's Nest. We are ready to book our October week for next year!

Absolutely beautiful surroundings.

  • 5 of 5

Very relaxing and recharging getaway. The cottage was lovely, and the screened in porch provided the perfect serene setting for a great cup of coffee or glass of wine. We enjoyed the close proximity of the beach, and the short drives to shopping, restaurants and apple picking.

Chicago, Illinois

secluded and peaceful haven

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were looking for a quiet and secluded place to rest, read, and relax, and the Owls Nest did not disappoint. Surrounded by trees and away from the road, it provided a restful and comfortable haven. We could walk across the road for amazing views and a walk on lake Michigan. It is also a short drive to Fennville, Douglas, and Saugatuck so we had good choices of restaurants and things to do. The directions were easy to follow and the owner was responsive to all our needs.

Beautiful place!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our visit at the Owl's Nest. So peaceful and a nice place to get away from it all. We explored the area and loved how close we were to Lake Michigan. We were celebrating our 32nd anniversary and couldn't have been more romantic and special. It was easy to work with the owner, Susan. The cottage had so many nice touches. The bed was so comfortable. We slept til 830 everyday which is not like us! We were so relaxed, we didn't want to leave. Hope to go back someday. The Owl''s Nest doesn't disappoint nor does the area!

More to do than a week allows! Needless to say, the beach and Lake Michigan are the big draws but there's so much more! Orchards, boutique shops, fine dining, hiking, canoeing, fishing, live performances...and then there's the peace and quiet of the woods. Check our reviews and you'll find that everyone gravitates to the screened porch. It's a great place for coffee in the morning, a book (read 'nap') in the afternoon or a glass of wine at dusk. You'll find really great restaurants that focus on fresh, local produce supplied by many of the area's organic farmers/producers. Vineyards and fruit plantations provide the opportunity to pick your own or purchase a peck! Not fancy or showy, but homey & cozy. The Owls' Nest is truly our home away from home and we hope you're as comfortable there as we are - enjoy!

Only five miles from Saugatuck/Douglas, the 'Arts Coast of the Midwest' and designated a 2009 Distinctive Destination in the United States by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Dozens of art galleries and studios; one of the top ten annual film festivals in the US; live theater and music options abound; wide variety of bars, restaurants and clubs; and home to Oval Beach. Recently rated 'Best Beach in the Midwest' by the Chicago Tribune; 'one of the 25 best shorelines in the world' by Conde Nast's Traveler; and 'one of the top five beaches in the US' by MTV.

Golf: You'll find a number of golf courses throughout the area. Brochures are available in our guidebook at the cottage or online.
