Centrally located allowing easy access to the whole of Brittany
About Karen Chilver
My husband and I enjoy travelling all over the world and have visited France many times over the years. We now have the pleasure of holidaying with our beautiful Weimaraner Brady, so the accessibility of Brittany coupled with the charm and variety of attractions led to our purchase of Poul Bizic. We have tried to ensure that the house has all the modern conveniences required to offer a comfortable and relaxing stay whilst still retaining the charm of a traditional building in the heart of the countryside.
Karen Chilver purchased this Cottage in 2015
Why Karen Chilver chose Corlay
The location of Poul Bizic allows easy access to all of Brittany. Located in the midst of farmland with no neighbours to disturb or hear you yet within a few minutes of the village of Corlay - easy for the morning trip for freshly baked bread and the emergency trip for the evening bottle of wine!

A spacious, comfortable and well-equipped house set in lovely grounds and well placed for exploring.
We spent a week in Poul Bizic in early October. The house is brilliant, managing to provide every modern comfort and convenience whilst maintaining its French charm and character. The bedrooms are spacious with lots of storage and hanging space and the beds are very comfortable. The kitchen has literally everything you could need and there is a huge dining table. The seating in the lounge area is also comfortable with a TV/DVD, satellite box, a library of DVDs and there is a massive wood-burning stove; there was an abundance of newly fallen sweet chestnuts whilst we were there some of which we roasted in the ash pan of the fire - very tasty.
The house is set in its own spacious grounds with parking in a lovely, tranquil rural setting, yet only about six minutes drive from the centre of Corlay which has a reasonable supermarket, a butcher, a baker, banks and a newly reopened fuel station/convenience store.
There is an abundance of things to see and do in the area, and the hosts have compiled a comprehensive dossier in a folder in the house. We particularly liked Dinan, but Quimper and Quintin are lovely too and the beach at Sables d'Or les Pins is beautiful (even in October), we had a great lunch here at the La Potinière restaurant (be aware that most of the restaurants even in the bigger towns close around 14:00). Don't miss the lighthouse at Frehel along the coast. If you are into horses the Haras National de Lamballe at Lamballe is the national stud for the local breed of "postier" horses and the guided tour (in English) was excellent and educational.
Overall then a great place to stay.
A wonderful 3 weeks in a beautiful area and a house full of character and so well equipped.
We have stayed in many houses in France over the years but this one far outshone any others! The house was in a really quiet location yet only minutes drive from the town of Corlay. Each room had a character of its own with real thought to decoration. We like to cook in the evening using local produce and the kitchen had absolutely everything we needed and more. Our 10 month granddaughter was in the party and all the equipment needed for her was safe and readily available. The gardens were beautiful and all outdoor equipment comfortable and more than adaquate, the addition of outdoor play equipment was great, including the play tent and balls. A new addition this year was the spa, this was enjoyed by all even when the weather wasn't brilliant! As the house was in central Brittany it is great for beaches, lakes and historic towns. The information pack in the house is really informative and the owner was really helpful with queries before we went. A text was received during our stay to check all was ok. If you are looking for a noisy, busy holiday then this is not the location for you; however if you are looking for peace and quiet, a real taste of Brittany, a central location where you can choose your activity level, then look no further. The house is in character with the location but with all modern conveniences. The whole family totally recommend Poul Bizic and when we return to Brittany we will return to this house without a second thought.
Picture perfect country retreat
Surrounded by beautiful farmland this is a lovely peaceful property. The house is the only one on the road so a car passing is an event. We spent our evenings sitting out listening to only insects, birds and the odd cow...quite the novelty for a Londoner!
The house is very well kept with large rooms. The information book provided us with everything we needed to know about the property and the surrounding areas; very useful for days out.
All and all, a great stay and I will definitely be visiting again.
Stayed at Poul Bizic last week and had a lovely time. The house is very homely and everything you would need is catered for. The weather was great and we were able to sit on the front patio each evening. Very peaceful and surrounded by farm land. The information pack was brilliant and we visited 5 places which we thoroughly enjoyed and each had a good restaurant. Corlay has everything you would need. There is a fishing lake you can walk around. The vets are very helpful if you need your pet passport completing and English is spoken. The Bretons are lovely people and very helpful.
Would highly recommend Poul Bizic for a stay.
Perfect Family Holiday
We stayed here for a week with the family, including a four month old baby. The house has everything you could want or need including a travel cot and high chair, which saved us valuable room in the car for the journey over.
The house is a charming little cottage, full of character but at the same time every bit practicable. You can tell the owners have taken every effort to make sure the house is a home from home. The Kitchen is modern and fully equipped, the lounge has UK TV, dvd player (large selections of dvds to choose from) Sound system and games console. We particularly enjoyed a glass of wine in front of the log burner.
The bedrooms are spacious and every room has its own on suit bathroom, which always makes things easier and more comfortable when holidaying with the whole family.
Corlay, the local village is charming and peaceful, but has everything you need, bank & ATM, baker, butcher that sort of thing (the bread from the bakers is amazing) and although the main supermarket is only a short drive, Corlay also has a '8 a' Huit' which is like a Tesco local, not as big as the supermarket but you can get what you need when the rest of the village has closed for lunch or if you come back late from a day out, as we often did.
All in all a wonderful house and holiday, we are already looking at dates for next year.
Poul Bizic a fantastic place to stay
The house is situated down a country lane with not much traffic. Therefore it is a peaceful and quiet place to stay surrounded by fields.
The house itself is huge and very comfortable. The bedrooms are comfortable and its great that they are all ensuite so no queues for showers etc.
Everything has been catered for in the kitchen, you will find everything you need and more.
The house was very clean and tidy and well maintained.
The gardens front and back are both enclosed so are therefore safe.
I had to text Karen with a couple of questions and had a very quick reply.
We would highly recommend staying at Poul Bizic.
The little town of Corlay has everything you need, loads of banks, 2 supermarkets, 2 fuel stations, post office etc so you don't have to travel to far to get anything if you don't want to. The Vets are just outside Corlay and they are very helpful with getting the pet passports completed for returning to the UK.
With plenty of quiet country lanes, several lakes and pretty woodlands in the area you will find great opportunities for both walking and cycling locally. The fishing lake next to Corlay castle is a great place to walk your dog or go for a jog in the morning. The Lac de Bosméléac is 13km from the cottage and has a circular walk around the lake that takes around 1 ½ hours to complete. Birdwatchers can see many water birds here including coots and great crested grebes. You will also find designated routes along disused railway lines and the Nantes-Brest Canal towpath as well as paths that follow the coastline. Both the Lac de Guerlédan and the Quénécan forest are just 25 minutes away and have numerous trails and paths in beautiful surroundings. The Lac de Guerlédan - the largest lake in Brittany is also the perfect place for sunning yourself or messing about on the water, you can hire kayaks or pedalos or maybe try your hand at water-skiing. Alternatively just take a leisurely boat trip.
If you like fishing, Corlay has three fishing lakes and there are several rivers and other small lakes in the area, all of these are well stocked and fishing permits are available locally.
For golfers there are three 9 hole courses within 45 minutes of Corlay.
Two of the best beaches close by are Erquy & Binic on the north coast. Erquy has a lovely expanse of sand on a huge curving bay. You can sail, dive or rent a kayak here and there are several cafes and restaurants along the seafront. Binic's Plage de la Banche is one Brittany's longest beaches. It is popular with families and you will find a selection of bars and restaurants near the port.
The town of Quintin is close by and offers two chateaux, a weaving museum, watermills and some mysterious megaliths. The preserved village of Les Forges des Salles and the remains of the 12th Century Abbaye de Bon Repos are also near. The medieval town of Pontivy with its moated chateau and half-timbered houses is within 30 minutes.
Venture a little further and you will find the must see walled town of Dinan, castles, forts, medieval towns, ports, islands, beautiful beaches & coastal views, zoo parks, prehistoric monuments and cider tasting to name a few.
You will find an information folder at the cottage giving you plenty of ideas for places to see and things to do.
