Guestbook comments from the owner

By the way we have decided not to give you your house back, just kidding, we're in love with Astoria and your cute home. We are just going to have to book another week. We went to Seaside and played on the beach today. It was wonderful. Love Fred Meyer, we don't have those in California. Thanks for the great vacation!

Great place!

Comfy, warm and inviting. This is the perfect house for an Astoria get-away. We'll definitely be renting it again.

The stay was nice. The booking however...

  • 3 of 5

I have mixed feelings about this review. I liked the house. It was comfortable, clean, and was set up well. We didn't have any issues with the house itself. It would have been nicer if it wasn't raining buckets the entire weekend but the house served its purpose while we were there. It was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend for us at the Dark Arts Festival at Fort George Brewing.

(Please note that reviews cannot show rates and that is why the rest of the review is partially redacted.)

So here is the single issue I had with the rental and in my opinion, a big one. When I originally came across this rental on the HomeAway website last October, the rental was listed at $XXX/day, 2 night minimum. A reasonable rate for an off-season rental. I made a mental note of the listing and then in November I was ready to make a commitment to book the house. I went back to the website and it was still available and listed at the same $XXX/day, 2 night minimum rate. I attempted to reserve the house and received the following reply from Char, the owner.

"I am sorry. I'm doing a three night only for that weekend at ($XXX+25) base price per night. Just haven't updated my rates yet and I can't do it from my phone. The program doesn't allow you to sorry if you're interested in the three nights I can do that. --Char"

Needless to say, I was quite taken aback by this. It smacked of false advertising and I wonder if she has done this to other potential renters. Since there were no other rentals available and we didn't want to stay in a hotel we went ahead and booked the house for the 3 nights. We didn't stay the third night.

It was a nice stay. Too bad the owner was shady with booking process. I won't be renting from her again.

Owner's Response: Kenneth, partner and 2 other couples stayed at my home for the Valentine's Day weekend. Rates for the off-season are standard rates. Special holiday rates must be put into the system through VRBO using a PC only. Is it impossible to do this thru your phone. I had not input the special 3 day requirement block for the Valentine's Day weekend yet and I let this person know that. Kenneth wanted to only book two nights for that holiday weekend and my requirement was 3. I let him know that verbally since I had not put that online yet.. His response was "Ok I'll book the 3 nights". I charged him the weekend rate for all 3 nights. Not a higher holiday rate but the normal weekend rate. This holiday is one of 3 of the most desirable weekends of the year, and I could have charged a holiday rate and I did not. I really don't know why he is saying anything about rates. There is no reason for any comment about rates or anything else for that matter. This person actually even complained about the weather on that Valentine's Day weekend trip.... In my fabulous house in a fabulous location with I would hope someone he cared about. Now tell me who would complain about that?

Enjoyed our stay

  • 5 of 5

Working in Astoria for a week, the house had everything we needed for cooking quick meals and recharging. Beds were better than a hotel and the gas fireplace was nice for relaxing. There is a nice deck with a good view, and the house is not far from downtown.

Very pleasant house near the river

  • 4 of 5

This is a nice house in a quiet interesting neighborhood in eastern part of Astoriia. It is exactly as described. The furniture is comfortable, the beds were fine, it was clean and the kitchen large and well equipped. The stairs were not a problem for me (75 years old) or my grand daughter (3 years old). The best feature of the house is that it is just off the Columbia riverfront trail. The trail is a former rail line along the Columbia River. From the house it is a walk of about two miles around the beautiful Alderbrook lagoon, about 1.3 miles to the Rogue brew pub on a pier in the river or about 2.5 miles to the must see Columbia River Museum and the many fine restaurants of Astoria. Char, the owner is responsive and pleasant to deal with. We had a very good three days and would return.

Nice location, but not clean.

  • 2 of 5

The house is conveniently located, and has all of the amenities needed. The floors were not clean, there were spider webs that we had to clean off of the back porch, and the sheets were very rough. The bathrooms were filled with old bottles of shampoo and soap, even a used razor in the tub. Lots of leftover bottles of food in the refrigerator. Needs a good cleaning and some new sheets!

Owner's Response: I feel this review is inaccurate and the rating is unfair. I arrived one week after this party left. I did notice the vinyl flooring in the kitchen and dining area had black heel marks from folks wearing their shoes in the house. I do have a no shoe rule, just to keep everything clean but it appears that the rule has not been strictly followed. This vinyl picks up marks really easily. I am positive it was clean it just didn't look so. When I saw the black heel marks I brought it up to my house keeper immediately. The rest of the house when I arrived was immaculate. I did find a set of sheets that were pilling that turns out were not cotton and I donated those sheets immediately because I like 100% cotton in my home and sheets that are soft. I ended up actually going through all the sheets when I was there and took a bunch of extraneous sets home since there were plenty and left the remaining 100% cotton soft nice sheets there. There were plenty of sheets to choose from. If this guest wasn't happy with the set he had he could have just grabbed another nice set, since it appears he got the one set that was "rough". We supply shampoo and body soap for guests and I believe in taking care of the environment. Thus we do not just throw away what isn't used. I'm surprised that a half bottle of shampoo would be offensive. That goes true with condiments and food that is fresh. We leave condiments there for the guests to use and do not toss each time. It is always a guest's prerogative to toss, but environmentally we do not do that. This home is a lovely home, appreciated by all that come here. This guest is an exception.

Very quiet with nice views of the Columbia river

  • 4 of 5

We are from Louisiana and our son is working in the area and had to have shoulder surgery. We booked this home because we thought it would be comfortable him. It was recommended that he sleep the first two days in a comfortable chair. He was very comfortable. The home is dated but was clean and charming. We cozied up at night in the upstairs sitting room to watch Netflix on my laptop. It was our nightly ritual and I will miss it. We were able to visit Astoria and eat in many of the restaurants. Make sure to try Bowpickers and Bouy's (you can see sea lions through the floor). I recommend the rock fish and the blue and black beer. We also found a seafood market behind the Astoria Riverwalk Inn that had a great lobster melt. Tough I don't think it was actually lobster. We also ate a great burger at Portway where people were Shanghaied back in the day. We had great pizza delivered from Fultano’s. Had a hanger steak at Fort George Pub and stopped in one afternoon in the upstairs restaurant for a beer and breadsticks. We wanted to try Rogue’s but didn’t have time. We really enjoyed the Sunday market and riding the trolley we learned a lot about the history of the city. It is very rich in history. There are two places to shop for groceries a Safeway is very close, ask for a club card to get the best prices. We also drove a few miles to Fred Myers who has everything you could possibly need. There is a great shopping area in Seaside. We also visited Shallon winery a one man operation.
