Villa Efisia is quietly situated in a lovely area of Tuscany between the famous towns of Volterra and San Gimignano. Immersed in beautiful countryside with fields and woodland all around, the villa is set in a peaceful oasis surrounded by its own grounds and gardens and has a large private swimming pool (19m x 8m). The villa itself is comfortably furnished with many antique pieces and family heirlooms creating a warm atmosphere of a past era. On the ground floor is a huge and inviting living room with sofas, large fireplace, a piano and even a turn of the century billiard table. There is a charming dining room, and a traditional country kitchen which opens directly onto the garden. Also on this floor is a shower room with washing machine, and store room with iron/board. A staircase leads to the first floor where there is a pretty lounge with settees and television off which is a breakfast room with dining table, chairs, hob and sink, as well as the villas six bedrooms. The two master bedrooms, one with double bed, one with twin beds, both have ensuite shower rooms and open onto a large terrace overlooking the countryside (flower vases only mark the perimeters of the terrace, there is no guard rail). There are two further double bedrooms each with ensuite shower rooms and the remaining two bedrooms (one twin one double) share a shower room. Lovely gardens filled with lawns and ancient oak trees surround the villa and there is plenty of space for relaxing, or dining al fresco under dappled shade whilst enjoying the peace and tranquility. In a beautiful position in the grounds is a large private swimming pool (18m x 9m) which is furnished with large gazebo and sunloungers. There is also a barbecue and wood oven for guests use, as well as a small putting green for a spot of golf practice. Daily maid service (except Sundays) is also provided, there is Wi Fi internet connection and telephone (payable locally). The estate itself extends over two hundred hectares, and is bordered by woods and a nature reserve, so lovely country walks can be enjoyed. Just ten minutes drive away in opposite directions are two local towns with a selection of shops and restaurants. There is plenty to see in the area. Volterra of Etruscan origin is just 20 minutes drive, and San Gimignano is only 45 minutes away. Florence and Siena can be reached in an hour and the Tuscan coast is only 40 minutes drive away. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Villa Efisia
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Villa Efisia, and particularly liked the people we met there: the proprietor who welcomed us with a delicious meal, left us lots of food in the fridge and helped us settle in. Her maid Franca , who was friendly and helpful, and her work made our stay easier and more comfortable, and also her neice who spoke excellent English and was available to solve any problems or answer questions. The kitchen was the best equipped, and also one of the nicest to use, that I have ever found in rental properties. We all enjoyed using it. We were worried about having a lot of children on holiday in a house full of such beautiful - and breakable - things. But nothing dreadful occurred.
We were also surprised not to have been warned about having to drive over the dry, stony riverbed in order to reach the house. We enjoyed doing it - no problem - but we might have come in a tiny cheap car that could have found it tough going. The swimming pool was wonderful and enjoyed by everyone but it definitely needs updating. Both for the young and the old the slippery sloping sides make it hard to get out of.
Altogether it was a wonderful place for a holiday and we all enjoyed it.
