There is a story and a history behind this holiday house. It used to be a fisherman's house and the tower that has been reconstructed adjacent to the house is a lime kiln. In the 19th century, Zoutkamp was known for its shellfish fishery, the shells being used for making lime. The house has a charming dining room with an extra sitting area. There is also a separate living room, which is a wonderful place for watching television. The bedrooms have a very spacious look thanks to the height of the ceilings, with exposed beams that lend the rooms an authentic ambience. The bedrooms are also equipped with good box spring beds. Outside, the terrace is a lovely place to sit and relax, and there is a garden with a lawn next to the house. For centuries, the village of Zoutkamp has been known for its prawns and fishing. It is a true fishing village and anyone who would like to learn more about it can visit the Fishery Museum. The monumental locks and the fishing boats docked at the wharf are redolent of bygone days, making Zoutkamp a popular tourist destination. Lauwersmeer National Park, full of natural beauty and unique birds, is just a stone's throw away. You can even spot the white-tailed eagle there. A daytrip to Schiermonnikoog, one of the Wadden Islands, is another option; the ferry will take you there from Lauwersoog in 45 minutes. The Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre at Pieterburen is a must-see destination for children.
