Overview

The Old Fort is the only fully restored historic plantation in St. Vincent & the Grenadines constructed with cobblestones and wood beams in the classic French-Mediterranean mansion-house style. It is set high on the top of Mt. Pleasant and offers sweeping views overlooking the Grenadine Islands that stretch far Southward into the distance.

The estate grounds fall down to a cliff above the ocean with its golden meadows billowing with hay and tropical breezes that flow from every corner. The kitchen draws on fresh local produce and is famous for its fantastic cuisine with the restaurant a wholly Shangri-La affair that turns into a magical setting at night. This grand intimate estate is ideal for guests seeking a relaxed laid-back atmosphere, whilst at the same time is also conveniently located only a short distance from the best beaches and activities on the island.

Lush grounds are covered by numerous species of palms and fruit trees that surround one of the most spectacular pools you will ever see framed by bougainvillea and a profusion of tropical exotica. Recommended over the years by numerous international media it has been transformed into the kind of property you would never want to leave!

About Quirin Schaedle

Hi, I grew up in Bequia and as a little child helped my parents rebuild the old ruins which were once a part of the ancient plantation hundreds of years ago. When I was seventeen, I left Bequia to live in Europe where I worked for various well know hotels such as the Amsterdam Hilton and the Kempinski Vier Jahreszeiten. I also completed my degree in Hospitality Management in London. Since 2005 I have been the director of The Old Fort and have further improved the property. I welcome you heartily and promise that we will do the utmost in accommodating you and your party.

Quirin Schaedle purchased this chateau / country house in 1980

Why Quirin Schaedle chose World

The Old Fort is the only fully restored plantation in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and one of the only ones in the world. This history together with the immaculate service makes it one of a kind to visit! We also have one of the grandest estates stretching down several hillsides to the Atlantic Ocean beneath, whereas the property is also very grand and majestically laid out. The fact we have been in St. Vincent for almost 40 years gives us a knowledge of the area which is unparalleled. This again translates in the type of service we can offer to our guests. There are numerous other reasons why you should stay with us, such as the majestic views it offers (one of the best, if not the best on the island), the one-of-a-kind butler service, the very spacious bedrooms, the recognised kitchen and of course the fact that Bequia is one of the most beautiful unspoiled islands to be in the entire West Indies. Come to the real Caribbean, come to Bequia and The Old Fort. There is a lot more to discover you don't even know about...

What makes this chateau / country house unique

There are many benefits such as the undisturbed environment giving you extreme harmony with nature. The open and wide unobstructed views. The large luxurious property and suites. The customised menu using only freshly sourced ingredients. The very competent and friendly staff. The Grand Pool which was described by Gully Wells (a senior write from Conde Nast Traveller) as being one of the nicest she has ever seen. The majestic gardens containing numerous species of palms and flowers. The history of the building and various surrounding areas (a group of archaeologists are planning to excavate an entire new section within the hotel grounds). The fact that Bequia is such a great island to visit, and a lot, lot more!

Providing an amazing Caribbean hideaway

  • 5 of 5

Our 8 night stay at the Old Fort was just perfect. The property is truly one of a kind with historic buildings, a beautiful pool, breathtaking views, and even a pair of friendly resident donkeys. We were able to fully relax and take in all that Bequia has to offer stressed out people in need of a vacation! Can't wait for the next trip!

The Schaedle family have loving restored a fort on Bequia that gives you shelter from reality. We stayed a week to escape the hustle and bustle of the grind of life in the US and were richly rewarded for our choice. The staff at the Old Fort exceeded our expectations and the accommodations were first rate and a true experience not a cookie cutter hotel.

A Truly Unique Experience

  • 5 of 5

From the time we got off the ferry in Bequia our holiday was perfect. We were met by Otmar who was the creator of this wonderful place and who has now passed the torch on to his son Quirin. Between the two of them they have provided an oasis of charm and privacy that is unsurpassed on the island.

The Old Fort looks down over the sea with views of Mustique and other islands on the horizon. A gentle breeze cools the air and the grounds are alive with lush vegetation, fruit trees and flowers. The stone work is magnificent, reminiscent of times gone by with graceful archways leading you from room to room.

The bedrooms are well appointed, airy and fresh allowing a peaceful relaxing sleep. Depending upon your needs you can have a chef provide your meals or as in our case prepare your own food making use of the kitchen. This seems like a perfect arrangement for larger groups and a great place for a wedding or family time.

The dining area is under a sheltered roof but open to the outdoors where you can sit at the end of the day taking in the view and enjoying the gentle night. The sitting room just off the kitchen is very comfortable and everywhere you look there are things of interest from pottery, various antiquites and some quite amazing stone rubbings of ancient Carib artwork.

A fairly recent addition is the swimming pool where we spent quite a lot of time. A great design by Quirin!

The Old Fort is just a short drive from the town and a variety of beaches so it is easy to take advantage of all that is offered . All in all I can't think of a better location to explore the island from.

If you are looking for a peaceful, private place with warm, friendly hosts and a uniquely beautiful atmosphere you will not be disappointed.

What a Gem!

  • 5 of 5

The old fort is a place like no other I've ever been to. The setting is atop a hill with almost 360 views of the ocean from the tower room where we stayed. The breezes were delightful and I even had to ask for a blanket. Other rooms have air conditioning if you want, but we liked the rustic top floor. Quirin and Otmar were perfect hosts, regaling us with stories of life on Bequia, archeology, philosophy, and the vision and hard work that went into turning a ruin into a paradise.

The staff was attentive and friendly and kept the rooms immaculate. Sarah and Josiah served fresh delicious meals. We went to other restaurants in Bequia, but were always drawn to come back to the Old Fort to taste what they had that day.

I enjoyed a number of short hikes; one around the mountain top, another to Port Elizabeth, and another to Rocky Cove and a cactus garden led by Brownie the dog. As an example of the care the proprietors gave us, Quirin woke up before dawn to take us to a sailing charter he had arranged for us. We will be back often with friends and family.

Bequia (pronounced bek-way) is known by many as “the big little island”. Although it only measures 7 square miles (18 km2), it is the largest of the Grenadine islands in the country St. Vincent and the Grenadines, located in the Lesser Antilles, south of St. Lucia and west of Barbados. The island’s population of 5,000 - 6,000 is a friendly mix, which traces their ancestry back to Africa, Portugal, India, Ireland and the indigenous Carib Indians. Yet, the spoken language is English due to British colonial rule before the country gained its independence in 1979.

There are two seasons in Bequia, the dry season lasting from January – May and the rainy season (June – December), which always comes as a blessing due to the fact that Bequia is completely reliant on rain for its water. Bequia lies just below and west of the hurricane belt (the last hurricane that hit St. Vincent and the Grenadines with full force was in 1898), with temperatures ranging from about 75 °F (24 °C) to 85 °F (32 °C) throughout the year. The trade winds that blow in from the northeast to the southwest average about 14 knots, giving a cooling breeze to the island, especially the properties located on the Easter Side. The temperature of the peripheral waters is about 85 °F (29 °C) every day of the year, making it perfect for any sorts of water sports year round.

While one reads all about the more visited Caribbean destinations such as the Virgin Islands, Jamaica, the Caymans, and St. Martin, it's often hard to find information about St. Vincent and the Grenadines. One reason is that St. Vincent, a bountiful island with vast coconut and banana plantations, in the past never primarily depended on tourism as a source of income, and another is that the Grenadines are more "off the beaten track" and can only be reached by yachts or smaller private airlines. As a result, these islands are the perfect haven for travellers searching for more unique and beautiful getaways surrounded in natural splendours, rather than islands full of glitzy hotels, casinos and jet loads of tourists.

The romantic island of Bequia was named the island of the clouds (although some now say it was named the crutch because of its shape) by the Carib Indians and has changed only gradually over time. Due to its seclusion from the rest of the world, Bequia has built up a strong seafaring history, with age-old traditions in boat building, fishing and even whaling, being one of the few places in the world where limited whaling is still allowed by the International Whaling Commission. It has also been a sanctuary for sailors long before any other visitors discovered the Grenadines, although the island now has almost all the modern amenities one can get anywhere else.

Gold-sandy beaches, many of which disappear into coves that are excellent for sailing, scuba diving and snorkelling, encircle Bequia. The centre of the island is hilly and forested, providing a dramatic backdrop to the bays and beaches. Admiralty Bay, the island's natural harbour, is a favourite anchoring spot for yachtsmen from all over the world, and here visitors can enjoy the quaint waterfront, lined with bars, restaurants and craft shops. Isolated enough to remain relatively unspoiled, yet lively enough to be stimulating and entertaining, Bequia provides a blend of the old and new that many find perfect.

On Bequia you will meet some of the friendliest people in the Caribbean that will welcome you to the island and make you feel at home immediately. It is also a great place to make new international friends from all over the world, go on a day sail, go hiking, or just "lime" under a coconut tree with your favourite beverage. Bequia’s simple, unhurried lifestyle and beauty boasts a magical charm that leaves visitors wanting more. For additional details feel free to contact us or visit our info page at www.bequiablog.com.
