About the property

Sunrays is situated in a quiet avenue location close to all local amenities including shops, restaurants, the anchorage and the beach. All within 10 minutes walking distance.

The property is a single storey 2 bedroom cottage built in the early 1930s. It was completely renovated in 2015, while most of its original features including dark wood panelling and stripped floorboards were kept. It's a cosy character cottage with all the modern comfort you need.

Free Wifi, Clean linen and towels are provided, which means you don't need to bring your own bedding and towels! High chair and cot can also be provided. All free of charge!

Bedroom 1: Original double bed (with new mattress) with spare pull out single bed beneath, travel cot, wardrobe space and chest of drawers

Bedroom 2: 1 Double bed, chest of drawers, wardrobe space and French doors leading to rear garden

Lounge: two 3 seater settees, 1 double bed settee, 40” TV with built in Freeview, DVD player with a choice of CDs and DVDs

Kitchen/Diner: Large dining room table and chairs (seats 8), washing machine, dishwasher, free standing electric fan oven, 50/50 fridge freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster, iron and ironing board.

Bathroom: The property has a small bathroom which has a W/C, basin , a bath, and in-bath shower.

The cottage also has on display local art work which is available for purchase.


The property boasts a large garden with mature trees. It has a charcoal BBQ, garden table and chairs, parasol, deck chairs and a washing line.

There is adequate boat storage at the front of the property.

What makes this cottage unique

This cottage originally belonged to my great grandmother. And my great grandfather is called Arthur Trevor Briscoe, a famous marine artist at the time. He spent a lot of time on Mersea Island painting. The cottage has been kept in the family since.

Fantastic cottage and location!

Thank you so much for our stay at your lovely cottage. Mersea Island is beautiful and tranquil, with a fabulous shale beach and interesting jetty.

Cottage was fully equipped and with all home comforts, down to a pint of milk in the fridge ready for when we arrived and flowers on the table. A lovely touch, thank you.

Sheets were spotless, in comfy beds, nice large towels, lovely warm clean house once the heating kicked in.

Just enough books/magazines and original features such as painted dresser to make it feel homely but without being cluttered.

All instruction manuals in folder in the kitchen to help us use the appliances, which with the washing machine being better quality than the one I have at home, ended up being quite handy!!!

Sofas were extremely comfortable too, lovely big lounge for two adults and two growing teenagers.

Only criticism would be to use a water filter for the kettle as it was a bit crusty with lime scale in our tea due to the hard water (not owners fault, but we are from Yorkshire where the water is much softer)

All in all, a great three nights, would recommend to anyone.

Unusual Character Property

We had a lovely break in West Mersea. The property is quirky but very comfortable and plenty of space for a family of six. Beds are great. Would like to stay again, but perhaps in the summer. Location in Mersea is excellent.

long weekend in Essex with family

We enjoyed our stay on this unusual island. We liked the proximity to the shops and eating places. The cottage was comfortable and warm but could do with a new mattress in the master bedroom.

Lovely stay in chaming cottage

We had a great time at Sunrays, which is charming and well equipped. Thanks to Shelley, the manager, for her attentiveness and quick support when required. Garden could be really lovely with a bit of work, but this was only a very minor downside to a fantastic week. Thanks!
