The O'Connors, August 2010

'We have spent six wonderful weeks in this lovely and peaceful home on Cold Mountain. We love the Waynesville area. Some favorites are:

Summer Solstice on Waterrock Nob, Two full moons--so bright that we could see up the mountain from the bedroom window, Starry, starry nights; 64-74 degrees on the deck every morning; fireworks in Maggie Valley;swimming holes and waterfalls.....

The Hazens June-July 2011

'Once again we enjoyed being in your lovely, comfortable home. Dad fell in love with the butterfly bushes and the butterflies that arrived each morning. We loved kicking back on the deck, grilling meals, and exploring Waynesville. The Mast General Store is a favorite. Next year we plan to bring more of the gang. The Sullivans and Kennedys, September 2009.

'A cloud in our living room! We could look down on the clouds and one even came inside exciting our children. Staying in your home has been the highlight of our year. Thank you for all the thoughtful extras you have provided.' Smiths, June 2009.

There is always something to do in Western North Carolina!

DESCRIPTION OF OUR COLD MOUNTAIN RETREAT: The red front door entry entry welcomes guests at the ground level. Stairs lead up from the entry hall to the main floor of the chalet style home. There you will find the great room with fireplace, kitchen and dining, two bedrooms, a full bath with large shower, and laundry room. The expansive deck surrounds the great room and has additional entry stairs.

Upstairs is the master suite. The large bedroom has a king-size bed; 11-foot window seat (big enough for 2 children to sleep); sitting area, desk and views in three directions. Besides two mountainside views, there is a view through two interior windows over the great room and out to the mountain ranges in the distance. Truly spectacular. It feels like being in a tree house. The master bath has a double vanity, a separate shower and toilet, and a Jacuzzi tub.

The ground level recreation studio expands the house to 2600 square feet. The studio level has its own fireplace and a furnished galley kitchen. The third full bath with tub/shower completes an area that is flexible for living and sleeping making our retreat perfect for gatherings of families and friends.

Year round Cold Mountain offers a pleasant variety of weather with four beautiful seasons. Paved access to our property keeps it open year round.

About Rob Dulaney or Barbara Bishop

Rob Dulaney (behind the Elk antler) and Barbara Bishop are high school sweethearts who married 26 years later. Rob is a consulting engineer and Barbara is a marriage and family therapist, consultant, educator and retreat leader. Her practice, Soul Focus Resources, is in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. We enjoy our professions, and we also love spending time with our three grown children and four grandchildren. Traveling is on our list of pleasures. One of our goals is to hike in all the major national parks in the United States. In 2009 we explored the Grand Canyon. In 2010 we explored Mesa Verde. National Park in Colorodo. In Sept. 2010 we hiked in Scotland and England while exploring Celtic Christian sites. In May of 2011, Barbara spent two weeks on pilgrimage in Jordan and Israel. In May we will visit the Joshua Tree National Park in California. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is our frequent hiking ground since it is so close to Cold Mountain Retreat.

Rob Dulaney or Barbara Bishop purchased this chalet in 2006

Why Rob Dulaney or Barbara Bishop chose Maggie Valley/Waynesville Area

After vacationing on Cold Mountain for more than a decade, we knew we loved repeat visits to the area. There is so much to do here that it is impossible to do it all. Rather than continuing to rent someone else's vacation home, we decided we wanted to build our own. Fortunately, some acerage was available for purchase. In 2005 and 2006 we built our Cold Mountain Retreat. It is truly our home in the mountains. Since we aren't here year round, we love sharing our home with others.

What makes this chalet unique

While in the mountains, try the adventures of zipline canopy tours, hot air ballooning or helicipter site-seeing as ways to see the mountains from above! Cold Mountain Retreat offers the best of quiet mountain life and the advantages of lovely small towns like Waynesville and Maggie Valley. For city advantages, Asheville is only a 25 to 30 minute drive. Parks, hiking trails and wilderness areas surround us. Much can be explored by car and the hiking is unequaled. In Waynesville there is the Haywood Regional Recreation Center that has indoor heated pools including a children's pool and slide area. In addition, there are raquetball & basketball courts, yoga classes, aerobic classes, indoor walking and jogging lanes, locker rooms, and much more for year round use.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Yes, we stayed here for six wonderful weeks in this lovely and peaceful home on Cold Mountainl. We love the Waynesville area....Some of our favorites have been:

Summer solstice on Waterrock Nob; two full moons--so bright that we could see up the mountain from the bedroom; 64-74 degrees on the deck in the mornings; picking berries with grandkids and making fresh cobbler; fireworks in Maggie Valley; squirrel nest at eye level; butterflies as large as small birds; a hummingbird who would come eye-to-eye on the deck many mornings; lunch at Pisgah in on the Blue Ridge Parkway; and so much more.

Very nice

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. The house was big enough for everyone (there were 7 of us). The kids really enjoyed the pool table, and because it was downstairs, we were able to do other things upstairs.

Beautiful and comfortable house

  • 4 of 5

Perfect retreat (95%), telephone connections almost zero that was perfect however wi-fi was a chaotic problem and that made feel insecure and completely isolated. My wife and our daughter and her husband and son had a great time. Rob, thank you our experience was wonderful. Jay Pinzon

Lovely, spacious, welcoming

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful place for 2 families to reunite after not having seen each other for many years. Plenty of space for 2 families of 5. There was room at the table for all of us to eat, play games, and enjoy the breathtaking and ever-changing views of the mountains. We felt very comfortable and at home here.

Wonderful Stay at Cold Mountain Chalet !

  • 4 of 5

We recently enjoyed our Christmas family get together at this wonderful mountain chalet. This mountain home is located in a quiet, highly elevated mountainside with beautiful views. The home is very spacious and is laid out over 3 floors, including a large deck with access from several locations. The finished basement makes a great family room with a pool table, fireplace, and games. There is also a fireplace on the main floor. The home is full of all the amenities one would think off and the kitchen is well stocked with all the kitchenware and basic food ingredients one would need. We prepared and served meals for 8 on several occasions without an issue. Linens are also provided or you can to bring your own.

This home is relatively new, extremely clean and well maintained. The owners are organized, thoughtful and were very responsive to questions we had as we were nearing our arrival date. We plan on returning one day and would certainly recommend this home to friends wanting a relaxing time in a very peaceful and beautiful setting. The chalet is located only minutes from Pisgah National Forest and the Smoky Mountains where hiking, fishing, and sking is plentiful. You are also only 15-20 minutes from Waynesville and 30 minutes from Asheville and all it has to offer. Bryson City, home to the Smokey Mountain Railroad is only a 45 minute drive away. Enjoy !

Exceeded my expectations!

  • 4 of 5

I visited Cold Mountain Retreat for the Thanksgiving holiday with my family. The property far exceeded my expectations. It was clean, well maintained and beautiful. The views were breathtaking. We did have a little problem with the well and had to cut our trip shorter than expected but it was the fault of no one but nature. Rob was extremely concerned and helpful throughout the process. We will definitely visit again.

Nice location with good view. Large open great room with lots of windows. MB very nice BUT..

  • 2 of 5

Great location - convenient to BPR and Waynesville. Owners were very helpful and responsive. Cabin has a lot of positives like open floor plan, large deck, good view, large MB, and no extra charge for our pet, but their were negatives that would cause us not to return. First - read the fine print. Despite paying a cleaning fee you are expected to wash and dry and put back up sheets / linens and dishes before you leave. It is on the website but we did not notice and have never rented a place where this was necessary. What is not on the website but I suppose is implied is that you also have to make up the bed and stock the bathrooms with linens when you arrive as this is not already done for you. In our experience renting many cabins in N GA and NC the usual when leaving is to strip beds and leave linens in laundry area and load and start dishwasher. You will also have to pack your several days of garbage into your already packed car and take it to the dump on your way out. For us, this made us wonder why we were paying extra for cleaning. Also, beware if you have an older dog or younger children or older Adults. The stairway to the basement (entry and exit is through the basement) has no landing and is therefore very steep and long and there is no door at the top where the stairway opens to a short hallway that takes you to the kitchen and bathroom and kids bedroom. So this is a high traffic area, where one wrong turn can send you down a dangerous stairway. In our opinion there should be a door here to close off stairway, as someone using the main floor bedroom getting up at night to use bathroom and unfamiliar with layout could easily take a plunge. We did notice later that there is kid gate in the laundry room labeled to be used on the deck. Perhaps owners should at least call out the kitchen stairway as a potential danger and point to the kid gate as a possible solution. Also, stools in kitchen were somewhat wobbly - might be time to replace.

Owner's Response: I was shocked by this review. I had no idea this renter was so unhappy with our property. In all of my correspondence with all renters I always invite questions and I’m always glad to respond. Had I known of his concerns, I could have perhaps made some accommodations. 1. His first complaint was that he was expected to launder the linens and put them away before he left. This is clearly spelled out in our listings on both VRBO and HomeAway (as he himself said), as well as in the rental agreement (to which he agreed). 2. Next he was unhappy that he had to get sheets and towels out of the linen closet, make up the bed, and put towels in the bathroom. Again, this is clearly spelled out in the listings. 3. Third, he complained about having to take his household trash to a disposal site. As in most rural areas, there is no household trash collection at Cold Mountain Retreat, and trash must be taken to a disposal site in either the Bethel community or Canton. Again, this is clearly spelled out in the listings. 4. Next, he said the stairway from the entry to the second level is “very steep and long” and “has no landing”. It is a standard residential staircase and there is another, exterior stairway that does have a landing, so that option is available. It is clear in the listings that the main living level is one flight up and there is no elevator. 5. Finally, he was unhappy that there was not a door at the top of the stairs from the entry to the main living level. It would have been dangerous to put a door there, since swinging out over the stairs is never a good idea and swinging into a high-traffic area such as the hallway would lead to accidents. As he noted, we do provide baby gates. In our 10 years of renting the house, nobody has ever mentioned a door at the top of the stairway. In summary, the first three complaints are about things that this renter would have known if he had read the listing and the rental agreement. All I can do is provide the information to prospective renters; I can’t make them read it. The last two complaints involve this renter’s personal preferences and, as I said before, nobody has ever mentioned them, much less complained about them. If any of these things had been a deal-breaker for him, I would have gladly refunded any payments he had made.
