About the property

5 bedroom 2 bathroom traditional Villa in ancient mountain village - peace!

Villa Alfredo is a substantial property, originally intended for the ‘Squire’ of the village and has a real sense of tradition. Clues to the importance of the property are in the large windows, some of which are stained glass, the marble staircase, beautiful garden, and just the sheer space. The Villa has a real feel of yesteryear, and is dated in feel but that is all part of the Italian traditional theme!

The house is ideal for large families, with enormous rooms, high beamed ceilings, original stairways, enormous windows and shutters, original flooring, and plenty of space to relax and cool off from the heat of the day.

This house is a complete one off - a real feel of Italian living and history combined with a sense of adventure. This village retreat is also wonderful for hide and seek!

The garden, the ‘piece di resistance’ of the house, is unique, with original covered terrace leading from the house, ancient trees and a beautiful covered eating area with plenty of room for 10 guests. The garden offers plenty of sun and shade, and is really just the most perfect place to relax, high above the world, looking down on the stunning views…

Whilst this is a village property the garden is totally private.

The house also boasts its own pool which is situated just across the path from the house, and which has beautiful mountain views. The pool and pool area is lit for moonlight dips and is equipped with sunloungers, a heated shower and a fridge for perfectly chilled drinks!

Fuller layout information:

Ground floor:

Enter property into hallway, which leads to good sized kitchen, with oven, 5 ring hob, dishwasher, microwave and fridge freezer. Plenty of worktop space for cooking Tuscan delights.

The kitchen leads through to a good size breakfast room.

Also on the ground floor are two living rooms and an ample dining room, leading to the garden and covered terrace. There is SAT TV with a selection of freeview channels, WIFI and a DVD player

There is also a ground floor bathroom, complete with bathtub, shower cubicle, sink, and WC.

First floor with 5 bedrooms reached by the marble staircase:

Enormous double bedroom with ‘ante room’ and 3 windows.

3 other good sized double bedrooms, two of which are double aspect.

Enormous children’s room with 3 single beds

Shower room, with shower cubicle, sink, WC and bidet

Separate cloakroom with WC and sink.

Facilities are somewhat dated, but they are functional and have their own certain charm. Styles can be seen from the photos - a mixture of antique country furniture, art deco, etc.

Good sized garden with almost 360 degrees of jaw dropping panorama.

Covered terrace leading from dining room, with stunning views

Large dining terrace with views over the garden, and valley with mountains beyond

Plenty of opportunity to soak in the sun or relax in the shade under the ancient trees.

Pool – finished last Summer but not yet 'dressed' is situated across the path from the house, the private pool is lit at night for moonlight dips and has a heated shower.

The poolside garden area gives plenty of space for sunbathing with a view of the mountains, and is even equipped with a fridge to save going back into the house when guests are in full ‘relax’ mode.

NB More photos will be taken once flowers, eating area and pool furniture etc is in place.

Lofty villa in beautiful mountain top setting

  • 5 of 5

Stunning location, amazing views, lovely garden setting and veranda for sunny morning breakfasts. Village shop/bar an easy 10 minute walk selling all the basics. Train station nearby with trains to the beautiful historic town of Lucca. Piero the owner, was a great host who made us feel like part of the family.

Gorgeous elegant house in a perfect hill-top location

  • 5 of 5

We had a very very happy week here. With an extended family of 10, there was lots of space for everyone. The house is really elegant with stone floors, high ceilings and period furniture, and the garden has different areas to sit under shady trees and look out at the magnificent views of forested mountains in all directions. The location is quiet, on a steep outcrop of a mountain village, but a ten minute walk to the friendly local shop and bar. The children could play basketball, table-tennis and football, and we all loved the swimming pool. A short drive to the local train station, with services down the main valley into Lucca. Highly recommended!

We had a wonderful stay at Alfredo.

  • 5 of 5

We felt the villa was wonderful value for a large group and loved the real authentic feel of a proper Italian house rather than a character less holiday home. In fact this used to be the ‘Squires’ house and you get a real sense of history with it.

The villa was very spacious and we just loved the large private garden which as the advert says is like being on top of the world.

There was plenty of room for us to be together or separate and we loved dining in the garden all together.

The pool was great with fantastic views over the mountains and we spent some of our stay just relaxing on the grassed terrace above.

The location is a tiny little village giving a really old world feel and we felt we were staying in a really unique place. A real place to relax…

Our stay was made all the better by the wonderful welcome from the owner Piero who lives a few minutes drive away and who fully respected our privacy but was there to help and give us invaluable local knowledge when we needed it. We even got him to cook for us one evening!

This place is highly recommended for those looking for a real Italian stay and not an imitation of the real thing!

Villa Alfredo

  • 5 of 5

My family and I visited Villa Alfredo between August 6th and August 19th 2015. All I can say is this villa is fantastic, coupled with Peiro (villa owner) made this holiday truly fantastic. The house, the pool, the gardens, the village all exceeded my expectations. I would without a doubt recommend this villa to anyone who is looking for a true Tuscan Retreat.

Très belle maison; superbe vue; mobilier désuet; litterie franchement inconfortable.

  • 4 of 5

Owner's Response: Hello Alexis and thank you for your review. We are glad you found Piero to be a great host and you had a lovely holiday. Following your comments re beds and the e mails between us, Piero has ordered 2 new beds today to replace those you mentioned were uncomfortable. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, since we understand a good night's sleep is important! Best wishes Lorraine at tuscan-retreats

Step back in time!

Villa Alfredo, a 5 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom house, is situated at the top of the tiny ancient village of Cascianella, high in the hills overlooking the Garfagnana Valley. The population of this little village is only 12 permanent residents, with a handful more in the summer, which ensures peace and quiet, and safe exploring for children.

The views from this olde worlde village, are amazing at every turn due to its high position, and from the garden there are almost 360 degrees views of the entire area - wonderful!

All this peace and yet only a 10 minute walk or so from another village with bar and basic shop, and less than a 5 minute drive, crossing the river, to a larger village with all facilities including supermarket, traditional shops, some bars, a couple of restaurants, Tuesday morning market when the village really comes alive, a river, and a train station for easy exploring.

The property is located a 20 minute drive from the market town of Castelnuovo and 35 minutes or so from the mediaeval town of Barga both with their various bars and restaurants. Pisa 90 mins; Lucca 1 hr 15 minutes; Florence 2 hours; mediaeval villages everywhere; National Parks 30 mins.

Closer to home there are plenty of little historic villages to visit, many of which have local festas in the summer. There are also the lakes of Gramalazzo, Vagli (with its hidden village submerged by the water) and Pontecosi, and some guests love to swim in the river. Alfredo is also ideally located for visiting the local Fortress at Verrucole which is a good afternoon out, with stunning views and some interactive activities for the children. Also close by is the Buffardello tree climbing and zip wire park (ideal for both adults and children of all ages with a variety of runs) where one can take a picnic and spend the entire day in the welcome shade of the forest.

The real beauty of this area is the dramatic mountain scenery, and the hundreds of hilltop villages to explore, endless picnicking opportunities, and the pure peace of a non touristy holiday ......

There are plenty of dining options to find by car, and for evenings when you wish to dine at home, we can arrange for the owner to come and cook for you (with prior arrangement) which is always a popular option at our properties with such facilities.

Experience real Italy in an authentic traditional village property (the Squire’s house), which has been updated/equipped to give a little more modern twist on yesteryear.

NB - access is through the village and there is a very narrow opening just before the house - fine in a small car, but in a larger car you may need to close wing mirrors. For those that the small gap scares, there is parking in the village.
