Lane grew up spending his summers in the Outer Banks and Terra has been visiting here since the '70s. This is our second rental property. Lane is a retired Physicist and Terra is an NC Tax Auditor. We lived in the Washington, DC area for many years and just recently moved to Elizabeth City, NC to be closer to the beach, but not too far away from our four beautiful daughters. Our interests include reading, blogging, classical music, painting, gardening, traveling, cooking, spending time with family and taking care of our dogs, Banksy, Shrimp & Grits.
We enjoy spending time at our beach house when it’s available. We love to let the dogs run free and sit out on the beach and read, especially in the fall. We enjoying ending our day with dinner on the screened porch enjoying a glass (or two) of wine. Then we may fall asleep to the sound of horses neighing and the wind whipping through the windows.
We hope that you can enjoy these things too and will feel comfortable doing business with us.
Terra Fox purchased this house in 2002
Because there is nowhere else like it.
This place heals the soul. Wild horses visit you at the house.
It is a long, bumpy ride to arrive, but once you do ahhhhhhhhh. Peace, quiet, huge expanses of beach that feel almost private, horses at your doorstep, views galore, dolphins, pelicans, I could go on and on. My parents, three children, one old golden retriever and I stayed for two weeks, and we only went into town twice. The house and surrounding area had more than enough to entertain us. The kids loved the tide pools and the horses and great kite-flying. The dog loved the freedom. And we "older" folks just loved the relaxing and being away from it all. The property is very accurately listed, nicely clean and well-maintained, and the owners were very accomodating. I would definitely recommend this property as long as you are willing to make the long, sometimes harrowing beach drive - it is not for the faint of heart! Also, we recommend the lighthouse climb. Again, a bit terrifying, but quite the experience.
Stayed Oct 2 - Oct 6 (left a little early due to hurricane Matthew)
Had a lovely time. Found everything we needed to feel at home.
Home is well maintained and clean. Great showers!
Hope to be back someday.
This was the third time we have stayed at this house. What we love most about it is it is not a huge grand sand castle, but a practical 3 BR 3 BA house perfect for a small family or just the 2 of us. Best spot for a sunset or star gazing is the roof deck off the master BR. The house is 3rd row and close to the beach, complete with wild horses, fox and nature's serenity. We hope to return again another season, and stay even longer...
We stayed here 6 years ago and returned to the very same house for all the right reasons. The house has all the items you could need, from Jacuzzi to the barbecue and the awesome views. The kids catch fish and the house even has an outside fish cleaning station. The ponies walk by, the beach is not crowded. It's a little slice of heaven! Terra is very responsive for any questions we had. The advice to ensure you have a real 4WD is very true. Budget rental cars gave us a 2WD Yukon after promising a 4WD. We got by, but Terra is right, 4WD is really required.
We had a wonderful stay at Breaking Wind. Everything was as stated by the owners and they were very helpful and considerate. The horses really do like to hang around the house. We were so close to the beach most of our family walked there every day and made trips back in the middle of the day. Hot tub was great! Having three full bathrooms was a treat. The location was perfect for us, about half way from the beginning of the beach to the end. Thank you for sharring your home!
Our family enjoyed a wonderful week-long vacation here. It was the perfect size for our group of four adults and two small children. The house was clean and homey, and well-equipped with everything we needed. We loved being so close to the beach, and seeing the horses every day was a real treat!
The house is just a minute's walk from one of the Atlantic Coast's most pristine beaches, protected from over development by being sandwiched between four near-wilderness areas - the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge and North Carolina Estuarine Research Preserve to the south, and Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park to the north, just over the Virginia/North Carolina state line.
As would be expected from the area's name, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is a must for access to these beaches. The house is a 7 mile drive on the sand along the surf line from where North Carolina Route 12 ends just north of the Currituck Lighthouse.
From the end of Route 12, simply put your car into 4-wheel drive, cross through the cut in the dunes, and head north into the little remaining bit of paradise of this type left on the Atlantic Coast. This paradise hosts 81 Wild Horses that roam free in the area.
