About the property

Doodale Cottage is a spacious one bedroomed grade II listed converted stone barn. The cottage is located on a small working farm on the outskirts of Malton in the village of Old Malton. There are 2 pubs serving good Yorkshire food within walking distance.

With easy access to the A64, the cottage is an ideal base from which to explore the many different attractions of North Yorkshire including York, the coastal towns of Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay, the market towns of Malton, Pickering and Helmsley and the scenic North Yorkshire Moors.

The open plan cottage has WiFi and benefits from underfloor heating in addition to a wood burning stove.

The main door opens into a well equipped fitted kitchen with modern appliances including a full sized dishwasher, fridge freezer and microwave. The kitchen and dining area are separated from the living area by a central wood burning stove. The comfortable living area has a leather sofa, two wing back chairs, TV and a selection of games, books and local maps.

The upstairs has a glass balcony, a king and single bed, to give flexibility in sleeping arrangements and a shower room. Towels, linen, a box of logs, gas and electricity are included in the rental costs.

Outside there is a small garden with table and bench seats and off road parking for up to 2 cars.

For people wishing to explore further, the farm track is a pleasant walk and usually our fold of 28 pedigree Highland Cattle can be seen. They vary in age from calves born in June 2017 to mature 10 year old cows.

Doodale Cottage has been awarded 4 stars with a gold accolade as part of the VisitEngland National Quality Assessment Scheme.

About Sally

We are Roger and Sally and spent 30 years of our working life in offices in the South of England. Between 2008 and 2013 we gradually transitioned from the South of England to a new life style in North Yorkshire.

Sally purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Sally chose North Yorkshire

In 2008 we were looking for our 'Grand Designs' project to keep us occupied once our 2 children left home. We looked at building plots, barns for conversion in Berkshire and Devon and even an old brewery tower in Somerset. Barr Farm was special due to the 100 acres of land, village location and endless possibilities for mini projects. Over the last 8 years we have extended and renovated the farmhouse, converted the attached barn into Doodale Cottage, introduced Highland Cattle to the farm and worked with a contractor to understand and improve the farmland.

This was our second visit and it will not be the last. It is a lovely cottage, located in a convenient place for us to travel easily to many of the great places in Yorkshire. It is spacious, well equipped and Sally even provides loads of goodies. Highly recommended.

Everything is quality with this cottage

We were met by Sally who gave us a summary of the cottage and also places to visit and eat in the area. Sally and Roger also gave us a walking tour of their beautiful farm and introduced us to their cattle.

The overall quality of the cottage and the attention to detail would be hard to beat and would be the best self catering cottage we have stayed in by far. Secure parking was outside the door, a couple of excellent local pubs within easy walking distance and the shops and market place in Malton just 5 minutes drive away. We found the area to be an excellent point to branch out in various directions to explore the North Yorkshire Moors and the various nearby villages. Also just a 40 minute drive to Whitby and coastal areas.

Fantastic holiday cottage.

Sally was a friendly hostess who was there if needed. Cottage was superb. Clean, confortable and cosy. Private secure parking. Access to farm grounds provided enjoyable evening strolls. Rural location but convenient for touring North and East Yorkshire i.e. Scarborough and Whitby. Malton interesting old market town with curiosity shops in The Shambles. Good coffee shops. We visited the Nidderdale Show which was a great day out albeit a 100 mile round trip. The Wentworth Arms was friendly with good food and ale. We have stayed in many holiday cottages over the years and this ranks with some of the best.

A very comfortable and definitely five start cottage

We were very impressed with the standard of the cottage and all its equipment. Everything provided was of excellent quality, the bed was very comfortable and especially with its 600 thread count bedding.

Being able to arrive and be provided with tea/coffee making facilities including milk and a bottle of wine was a lovely touch, as was the home made sponge cake which was delicious.

There was certainly lots to visit in the area, and would thoroughly recommend Castle Howard and the Eden Camp, although allow a good 5 hours for the camp, we went back a second day and still did not finish it.

The farm which the cottage is situated on is immaculately kept with beautiful flowers surrounding the entrance.

Beautifully appointed holiday cottage

Just returned home from a 4 night break at Doodale Cottage. It has been very well renovated with a stylish but comfortable interior with everything you could possible need to make it a home from home. Sally was very friendly (we didn't get to meet Roger) and welcomed us on arrival. The farm is great and we saw the highland cattle. Will definitely return and recommend to friends and family.

Car: recommended

Doodale cottage is located on the outskirts of Malton in the village of Old Malton. Located in a conservation area, Old Malton is a pretty village with many stone cottages and two pubs, the Royal Oak and the Wentworth Arms. Both serve good Yorkshire food.

The larger market town of Malton is just a 5-10 minute drive or ride on the bus or a 25 - 30 minute walk away. Malton has a variety of family run shops, family run cinema, restaurants, supermarkets, most major banks and a cattle market on Tuesdays and Fridays. On the second Saturday of each month (March to December excluding May) the Malton Monthly Food Market is held. 2014 saw the opening of the Malton Cookery School, which offers many different full and half day cookery courses, including Dinner at the Chef's Table where the dinner guests watch as a celebrity chef prepares seasonal dishes using local ingredients. In May, there is a 2 day Food Lovers Festival which attracts many stalls from across Yorkshire and live cookery demonstrations.

Less than a mile from Doodale Cottage is Eden Camp, a multi-award winning Modern History Theme Museum housed within the grounds of an original World War Two prisoner of war camp. At Eden Camp the story of World War Two has been re-created using sights, sounds, smells and moving figures to create a unique atmosphere that makes it feel like you travelled back in time to wartime Britain.

Heading west from Old Malton you come to York. The historic town of York is just 30 minutes on the train from Malton, where you can visit some of the many museums including the national railway museum (no admission charge), visit York Minister, discover how chocolate is made (and have a taste), shop whilst wandering through the Shambles, take a tour of a brewery, take a boat trip on the Ouse or have a day at the races.

Yorkshire's finest house and estate, Castle Howard, is only 7 miles away. Home to the Howard family for over 300 years, Castle Howard is a magnificent 18th century residence set within 1,000 acres. It has been used as a location for film and TV productions, recent productions include Death Comes To Pemberley in 2013 and Brideshead Revisited in 2008.

Heading north from Old Malton you come to Flamingo Land, Pickering and the North Yorkshire Moors. Among the 8 extreme rides at the Flamingo Land theme park is Mumbo Jumbo, one of the steepest roller coasters in the world. Pickering is the starting station for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR), which will take you across the Yorkshire Moors to the scenic seaside town of Whitby. The North Yorkshire Moors offer plenty of walking opportunities, including the scenic Hole of Horcum - a huge natural amphitheatre 400 feet deep and more than half a mile across, apparently formed when Wade the Giant scooped up a handful of earth to throw at his wife during an argument!!

Heading east from Old Malton you come to the Yorkshire coast and the seaside towns of Filey and Scarborough. Further north up the coast is the quaint village of Robin Hoods Bay and the fishing town of Whitby, featured in Bram Stoker's Dracula. Down the coast to the south of Filey is Bridlington, Flamborough Head and the RSPB conservation area of Bempton Cliffs.
