About the property

Zero Carbon Emissions Ecolodge built with hemp, powered by solar

A 45m2 open plan chalet style bungalow built in hemp on recycled car tyres with triple glazed windows and doors, equipped with LED lighting and the latest far infrared heating. Green Tourism UK recently assessed the lodge and rated it with a Gold Standard Award with a score of 87%. The lodge also has both green walls and green roofs to enhance the biodiversity of the site. The lodge looks over open fields and has its own private terrace. There is a fully equipped kitchen, a small utility room with washing machine, TV with Sky and free wifi. The lodge has a double bed plus a double sofa bed that can be used to accommodate additional guests.

The lodge is situated just off the Ridgeway national trail and Chilterns Cycleway that together with a dense network of bridle ways and footpaths, offer unlimited on and off-road cycling and hiking. We have a couple of vintage bikes that can be hired for a small fee to enable you to explore the area if you can't bring your own.

About The Owner

I trained as a soil scientist and worked/lived in Africa for 13 years. After returning back to England, I worked on various Eco developments including Bicester Ecotown and clothing Ecofactories in Bangladesh. I've also developed Eco holiday resorts in England, Kenya & Lesotho.

The Owner purchased this chalet in 1948

Why The Owner chose South Oxfordshire

This area has some of the best mountain biking/hiking trails in the country. In spite of being only 40 miles from London, you can ride nearly all day along the huge bridleway network and not even see anyone else. There also plenty of historic sites within a few miles including Grims Ditch, Wallingford Castle and numerous Hill Forts.

This property is in the countryside but only 2 miles from the historic market town of Wallingford

What makes this chalet unique

The lodge has great views over farmland. It is highly insulated (hemcrete wallls with triple glazed windows and doors) and heated during the winter months by far infrared panels. It is powered by a 4kW array of solar pv panels with grid backup supplied by 100% renewable energy by Good Energy.

The lodge is amazing, warm and cosy even when the weather outside isn't. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need if you want to stay home and cook. Views to the front across fields and amazing to watch the red kite that frequents the front field as it patrols it's area. There are some beautiful places to see and lots of beautiful walks a short car ride away. We will definitely be returning.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for making the effort to write a review for us. We hope to see you again in the future. We are starting to win the war against the foxes with the assistance of an electric fence so next time we should be able to supply you with a few more free range eggs!

Very clean and well appointed. The outlook from the lodge was exceptional.

A wonderful relaxing weekend. The lodge was well appointed and exceptionally clean.

Tim and Sarah were incredibly welcoming. Supplying us with home made jam!

The setting close to Oxford was good.

The location of the lodge was wonderful. Waking up to the cockerel and red kites flying overhead was something else.

All in all a lovely relaxing weekend.

Thank you Tim and Sarah

The property was clean and well equipped. However, the shower needs attention.

Owner's Response: Hi Deborah, thanks for spending the time to write a review, we really appreciate it. Regarding the shower, we are trying to go "deep green" within the whole building rather than just ticking a few boxes. The shower we have installed only uses 5 litres per minute as opposed to 20 litres per minute for conventional showers. I'll still check the showerhead just in case it has firred up a liitle but I hope the feeliing of having a very small environmental "footprint" makes up for a bit of a dissapointment with the performance of the shower? Kind regards Tim

Great getaway from it all. With a couple of lovely towns just a short taxi drive away. Great outdoor seating and eating area. Coupled with amazing weather couldn't have asked for more. Tim very responsive.

Amazing retreat in the nature

  • 5 of 5

Really nice place to retreat from the city and relax. In the middle of the fields and within easy reach to all the amazing trails and cycle paths of the Chiltrens AONB.

Charlie, who looked after us during our stay was really nice and even lent us a couple of nice mtb to go around.

The home has all you need and would highly recommend

Thanks

Alberto

Beautiful peaceful place

  • 5 of 5

Mizpah had everything you could want , it was secluded quiet and in a beautiful part of the country. We enjoyed visiting the surrounding area and then returning to relax in the quiet countryside. Would definitely recommend to our friends and would stay there again next time we visit Oxford.
