About the property

Zero Carbon Emissions Ecolodge built with hemp, powered by solar

A 45m2 open plan chalet style bungalow built in hemp on recycled car tyres with triple glazed windows and doors, equipped with LED lighting and the latest far infrared heating. Green Tourism UK recently assessed the lodge and rated it with a Gold Standard Award with a score of 87%. The lodge also has both green walls and green roofs to enhance the biodiversity of the site. The lodge looks over open fields and has its own private terrace. There is a fully equipped kitchen, a small utility room with washing machine, TV with Sky and free wifi. The lodge has a double bed plus a double sofa bed that can be used to accommodate additional guests.

The lodge is situated just off the Ridgeway national trail and Chilterns Cycleway that together with a dense network of bridle ways and footpaths, offer unlimited on and off-road cycling and hiking. We have a couple of vintage bikes that can be hired for a small fee to enable you to explore the area if you can't bring your own.

About The Owner

I trained as a soil scientist and worked/lived in Africa for 13 years. After returning back to England, I worked on various Eco developments including Bicester Ecotown and clothing Ecofactories in Bangladesh. I've also developed Eco holiday resorts in England, Kenya & Lesotho.

The Owner purchased this chalet in 1948

Why The Owner chose South Oxfordshire

This area has some of the best mountain biking/hiking trails in the country. In spite of being only 40 miles from London, you can ride nearly all day along the huge bridleway network and not even see anyone else. There also plenty of historic sites within a few miles including Grims Ditch, Wallingford Castle and numerous Hill Forts.

This property is in the countryside but only 2 miles from the historic market town of Wallingford

What makes this chalet unique

The lodge has great views over farmland. It is highly insulated (hemcrete wallls with triple glazed windows and doors) and heated during the winter months by far infrared panels. It is powered by a 4kW array of solar pv panels with grid backup supplied by 100% renewable energy by Good Energy.

The perfect hideaway

We were looking for a relaxing weekend away with the dog and Mizpah was perfect for that. Tim and Sarah were very welcoming and fully accessible throughout our stay. Mizpah was cosy and comfortable and offered everything we wanted or needed and the surrounding area was beautiful and we had some great walks with the dog. We will certainly be recommending it to family and friends and look to return in the near future so we can enjoy it for longer.

Perfect stay at Mizpah Eco Lodge

This Eco Lodge is beautifully designed and in a stunning setting.Situated in the heart of attractive countryside, there is easy access to numerous walks and cycle paths along country lanes and off road tracks. We hired bikes from Tim and had a wonderful time exploring the locality, using the Chilterns cycle path. You are given a warm welcome at Mizpah Lodge which has excellent facilities (for instance hairdryer, ironing board, washing machine, well stocked kitchen with everything you would need) plus many additional personal touches such as freshly laid eggs and home made jam.Would highly recommend .

Beautiful, restful place to stay

My husband and I had only a couple of days here, but we both wished for more.

Mizpah is a quiet and relaxing countryside hideaway, with plenty of space and seating options both inside and out. The kitchen is usefully appointed with all the essentials to cook for yourself, and grocery stores are within a few miles. The bed is comfortable - if on the small side for us Americans! ;) - and the view out the front windows is just lovely. Beautiful walking is right out the door.

The place is a little hard to find, but Tim, the owner, was very available to help us out when we got lost.

We loved our stay here and we would absolutely book again!

Lovely, comfortable accommodation with 'feel good factor' of being environmentally friendly. Cosy.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Ecolodge, Wallingford. Clever design and green technology made this a comfortable and convenient stay. It is plenty big enough for a small family, though accommodation not really private enough for two couples. Kitchen and utility well provided. Bathroom nice and warm but shower a bit weak. Views across the field lovely to wake up to. Host, Tim, really friendly and welcoming.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review and we are glad that you enjoyed your stay. Yes, we have been careful that the eco design should enhance rather than reduce the decor and comfort of the lodge but felt that a power shower would not fit well with our eco aim so we went for a design that provided plenty of hot water without a high demand for energy. And you will be pleased to hear that our new solar panels are now generating more energy than the lodge is using during the day so we are able to export the excess back to the Grid.
