About The Owner

This was our summer home when I was growing up, in the late 80's my Mother remolded, and added on to the exiting cabin.

She then sold her home in Arlington, Va and stayed there the rest of her days. I love sharing this place with people for I have lots of fond memories.

The Owner purchased this house in 1956

Why The Owner chose Northern Virginia - Washington DC

This house was handed down to me. My siblings and I learned to swim in Lake Wilson and fish in Lake Mosby. We had lots of good times down on the river, We have had a wedding, and numerous pig roasts and of course lots and lots of picnics.

A PLACE TO MAKE MEMORIES!

  • 5 of 5

EXACTLY what we were looking for...an out of the way place in the hills of Virginia where the kids could explore the wooded paths and small lakes during the day, and pop in a movie or play video games after dark. The atmosphere here is quiet, rustic, charming, and unpretentious. The house has all the conveniences, with an old fashioned flair. Plenty of room! It was perfect for our urban-suburbanite family, who wanted to trade the hustle and bustle for a few days in the simple, quiet countryside. We found the owners to be exactly what they should be...available, helpful, and friendly. They suggested some places to visit and things to do, as well as what to be mindful of while exploring nature around the area. We only stayed for a few days in June, but had a wonderful time. In the end, it was very hard to leave!!

Wonderful get-away within easy driving distance from DC and MD

  • 5 of 5

We spent an awesome week at Miss Kitty's. The large house is well-furnished with comfortable beds, thick towels and a ton of fun activities. The house is well-suited for a multi-generational group with quiet areas separated from busier rooms. We played badminton, soccer, board games, fished and took a quick trip to Luray Caverns and a winery. It's clear that Mrs. Poe works hard to keep the place in tip-top shape.

Beautiful, spacious river house

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely beautiful. Miss Kitty's Place was just what our family needed. It was a spacious house, and easily fit our seven people, and could have handled more. It was close to DC (1 1/2 to 2 hours with traffic), and even closer to some of Virginia's natural wonders like Shenandoah National Park (1/2 hour), Skyline Drive, Luray Caverns, and Shenandoah Caverns (highly recommended by this family). The drive to DC was doable, though traffic is a guarantee, and it was truly wonderful to come back to Miss Kitty's after the crazy, busyness of the city. The house and its grounds are quiet, peaceful and beautiful. You literally have the Rappahannock River in your back yard. Our kids loved hiking the trails, wading and swimming in the river, and even using the boat at the fishing pond. Rivers, streams, waterfalls, trails, sunrises over the water, gorgeous stars at night. Really couldn't be better in terms of scenery. If you are into restaurants, they are close (15 min.), but Miss Kitty's Place has a full kitchen, two grills, and an outdoor fire pit. With a little grocery shopping 20 minutes away you can make all your own meals from scratch. Thank you Merilee, for your wonderful hospitality and the use of your truly beautiful home.

Wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

We loved Miss Kitty's place! It was neat, clean, comfortable and equipped with anything we could need. Our lab could not have been happier with the river so close by. We found and enjoyed the lake with its rope swing and beautiful waterfall. There were grills to be used and several places to sit outside and enjoy the peace and the views. The area is also steeped in history and small, pretty, historic towns. We'd love to come back with the grandchildren one day.

Perfect Place to Relax in the Country While Staying Near Washington, D.C.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, along with our two children (ages 11 and 13), stayed at Miss Kitty's Place for a week over the 4th of July. My kids' only complaint was that they wanted to stay longer! The house is spacious and well equipped. We were able to cook wonderful meals in the well stocked kitchen, and there were two grills (one by the house and one on the banks of the river) to use as well. Merilee was so helpful in pointing out fun activities to do both on and off the property. The kids loved fishing in the river and at the fishing lake, swimming and rafting in the river, and using the rope swing to launch themselves into the swimming lake. We even tried our hands at horseshoes, but never found the time to use the volleyball net. At night, when we were all tired, we enjoyed the plentiful board games and movies provided.

On the days we felt like leaving the property, Washington, DC, was just under 1 1/2 hours away. We were able to park at the nearest metro station and then ride the metro to wherever we wanted to go in DC. So simple to get into the city. Heading west, Shenandoah National Park is an easy 30 minutes away.

You can get an idea of how comfortable the house is by the pictures here, but it is the outdoors that will take your breath away. We spent every morning drinking coffee on the patio or porch looking down at the river through the beautiful flowering gardens.
