About the property

1 bedroom (2 full beds), 1 bath, sleeps 6

The Peach Penthouse covers the entire top floor of Coral House Triplex --- the 3rd house off the beach. Less than 1 block to the wide white-sand beach. Enjoy ocean breezes and sunrises on the large comfortable balcony (8 feet x 25 feet) where you may glimpse passing ships and shrimp boats. The large bedroom has 2 full size beds. In June 2015 the 2 couches in the living room were replaced with 2 new couches, one of which is a queen sofa sleeper. The high cathedral ceiling, lots of light, and warm colors provide an open, airy, welcoming atmosphere.

Within 4 blocks of Coral House are 5 restaurants, 3 clothing/gift shops, a package store, 2 convenience stores, an ATM, and a Post Office.

The Peach Penthouse is located mid-island between south beach (home of the pier and shopping) and north beach ( home of the majestic Tybee Lighthouse and the former Ft. Screven, now a museum).

Guestbook comments from the manager

Thank you so much for your wonderful third floor flat in the"Coral House". It was the perfect spot for the two of us and our dog, Skye. The furniture was comfortable, the light was amazing - beating in everyday through the large and numerous windows, the kitchen was perfect for our needs and the location was quiet and close to everything we could want. Where your place differed is in the details: the colours, the bed clothes, the curtains, blinds, extra toiletries and cleaning supplies, and e

2nd time and as perfect as the 1st

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd time staying in Mr. Walker's house. There isn't anything negative I can tell you. Mr. Walker and his house were perfect and had everything we needed PLUS more. Very clean and comfortable. Short walk to the beach, store, and restaurants. Doesn't get any better than this. Can't wait for my 3rd stay!

Not quite as expected

  • 3 of 5

Let me first say that we had a great time in Tybee Island, even with less than ideal weather. Most of the town is a bit past it's prime, but the people were friendly and the beach was great.

That said, I thought the Peach Penthouse was a little less than advertised. The pictures make it seem better than reality. The owners are making an effort to keep a good face on it, but the age and wear and tear are showing through. The biggest issues are:

1. It lacks any meaningful beach or ocean view. I feel like this was the most misrepresented aspect. The listing mentions catching a glimpse of passing ships from the balcony, and a picture is included of that very thing. In reality, there is some potential view of the water to one side of the balcony, but it is so overgrown with trees that a miniscule glimpse is all you could even hope for if you squint between the branches and the wind blows just right. The picture appears to have been taken from the walkway to the beach. Even less appealing is that the only clear view you do have is of the neighbor's yard. For as close to the beach as the house is situated (and it is close), I expected to see at least some water.

2. Parking is a bit bizarre and not well explained. It took us a while to figure out that we were supposed to park on the grass on the right side of the house. There are no marked spots or signs. In fact, it took a bit of exploring just to figure out where the entrance to the penthouse was. That could easily be added to the check-in instructions. It ended up being on the opposite side from the parking area. Not a huge deal, but made for a bit of a trek to and from the car, especially with luggage.

3. Our entrance was by the garbage cans and someone's leftover dog poop, which made for an unpleasant smell and significant flies when coming and going.

4. Both the bathroom and bed linens have clearly been in use for some time, and though they were probably (hopefully) clean, they did not instill confidence. There was a long hair on one of the towels, which didn't help. As is typical with these places, the pillows were flat. I bring my own pillows as a rule so it didn't affect me.

5. The beds are too small. To be clear, they are exactly as advertised (double) so my bad for not catching that, but it still seems strange to not have a bed realistically big enough for 2 people.

To end on some positives, we felt welcome, the wifi was fine, and the Sugar Shack across the street is great for breakfast.

Owner's Response: In our listing we actually understate our beach and ocean view. However, this guest is correct in stating that there was no significant ocean view at the time of their stay. That was because a palm tree just below the balcony had sprouted some fronds straight up that obscured the view. A few days later the tree was pruned and the view restored. The picture in our listing was taken from the balcony, not from the walkway to the beach. A little of the balcony railing shows in the photo. I don't understand how this guest wound up parking on the wrong side of the house. Our check-in instructions are simple and clear. They state: " Please park on the grass on the left side of the house. The entrance to The Peach Penthouse will be directly in front of you."

Great Location, Awesome Balcony

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the peach penthouse! It was about half a block from the beach and that part of the beach wasn't as crowded which was nice.

We loved walking on the beach, saw a lot of crabs and a few dolphins. Even saw someone catch a 3-foot shark close to the shore.

The property had everything we needed and more. There were a lot of beach chairs and several beach umbrellas as well as coolers and wagons. We enjoyed relaxing on the balcony, even enjoyed a few meals out there.

You can see the ocean to the left of the balcony which is nice too. The couches were very comfortable, found ourselves falling asleep on them often.

There are a lot of restaurants within walking distance and the IGA grocery was close. There was also a Kroger in between Tybee and Savannah. Highly recommend this property, it was great!

Apartment was clean and comfortable.

Enjoyed our stay, overall. Hope no one else is fooled by the picture of "the view from the Balcony" on the website. Also, there are no bikes as listed as things available outside. We would have taken our own.

Owner's Response: The "view from the balcony" is an ordinary picture taken with a phone. We do have to trim the palm tree beside the balcony periodically to maintain the view. We stopped providing bicycles years ago because it is so hard to maintain them in the salt air. I removed them from our listing at the time, but they must be appearing somewhere that I missed. I'll find it and remove it. Two bike rental shops on the island do a very good job of maintaining their bikes. They can focus entirely on that.

Car: recommended

Two lighthouses reside on Tybee Island; less than 3 miles apart, but so radically different in character. As you approach Tybee Island, you see the impressive Tybee Light in the distance. Tall, dark, and handsome with a white cumberbund. He was honored a couple of years ago when he got his own US postage stamp. ( In lighthouse circles that is akin to an Oscar.) But then as you cross the Lazaretto bridge onto Tybee Island, you look down to the left and blink. Is that a lighthouse in the water? Indeed it is. That's plucky little Cockspur Lighthouse. Weathered, plain white masonry. Not flashy at all, except ... At every high tide Cockspur stands in the ocean well off-shore. Only at low tide does the stony spur appear that supports the little lighthouse. A firm foundation after all.

So far the quaint shopping district near the pier has pretty much escaped the wrecking ball; it's still lost in the 40's/50's. Witness Arby's --- Tybee Island's only fast food restaurant. This is pretty much what Arby's looked like when they began in the early 60's. As for shopping, no Sak's here. We're talking beach shopping: T-shirts, souvenirs, Sno-Cones, umbrella drinks, seafood. But remember, for culture and serious shopping, there is colorful, historic Savannah, just 20 minutes away.
